The 2026 HamSCI Speaker Series continues this Thursday, February 12th with a look at how space weather affects users of space-based systems, like GNSS (global navigation satellite systems, eg GPS). The program begins at 2100 UTC, or 4PM Eastern.
Our presenter will be Dr. Terry Griffin, of Kansas State University. He will be speaking on space weather and heliophysics, and their effects on those who depend on GNSS in their daily activities. (Recall that during the Gannon Geomagnetic Storm of May, 2024, farmers were 'stopped in their tracks' when their GPS-based steering systems failed. Some clever person coined it 'the dancing tractor incident'.)
Dr. Griffin’s research and extension programs focus on cropping systems, agriculture technology, farm management, and digitalization of agriculture. In addition to academic faculty positions at the University of Illinois, University of Arkansas, and most recently Kansas State University, Griffin’s private sector experience influences his applied research programs, including the adoption and profitability of precision agricultural technologies, valuation of farm data, optimizing farm machinery decisions, analyzing temporal-spatial trends in agricultural systems, and how space weather impacts agricultural productivity. Griffin was recently appointed to the Space Weather Advisory Group (SWAG), which supports the White House Subcommittee on Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation (SWORM). He will serve through 2027, helping the U.S. prepare for the risks solar activity poses to GPS-dependent industries such as agriculture, construction, mining, and drilling.
The program will be on Thursday, February 12th at 4PM Eastern (2100 UTC).
