Hi HamSCI,
This year, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the
Murgas Amateur Radio Club K3YTL, of which I am a member. The club is named in honor of Fr. Joseph Murgas was a Slovak Catholic priest that emigrated to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Among many other things, Fr. Murgas was a prolific radio experimenter who
received many patents and is credited with the first overland wireless transmission, which took place from Wilkes-Barre to Scranton in 1905.
K3YTL and
W3USR will be doing a historical reenactment of this transmission tomorrow, November 15,
2025 at 1 PM Eastern (1800 UTC).
In Scranton, the event will take place in the University of Scranton
Loyola Science Center Room 133 PNC Auditorium. In Wilkes-Barre, the event will be at the Ally Building of Kings College. During our reenactment, the University of Scranton President Fr. Joseph Marina and Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti will exchange radio
messages with King's College President Fr. Thomas Looney and Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown. Light refreshments will be served at the W3USR station following the ceremony. For more information, please see the
University of Scranton Royal News Article and
WVIA story.
