Rob,
Thanks for the heads-up.   A bought one as well.

As did I.  It is quite a deal.  Remember, TAPR has the RX888 clock kit, thermal pad, and soon (tomorrow?) the HF RX-only isolation transformer module with a Mini-Circuits T1-1 on it.  If you buy both together, TAPR will ship them together, within the USA, using USPS Ground Advantage, for free.  Your order must only be for these parts to get this deal.

Do note that this vendor has no feedback and is a very recent addition to the platform. I have found Aliexpress to be good about refunding my money when things don't work out.

Hi all,

Is there a software unit test documented somewhere for determining whether a RX888 is working correctly out of the box?  E.g. "run this, get this output, compare with this fixed file"?  It's hard to define a deterministic test when you're talking about RF sampling, but maybe something like terminate the input in 50 ohms and ensure power levels are no more than XXX ADC units, or something like that?

(trying to figure out how Philip Gladstone would know to return a unit, for example)

PS: George - if you can send another email when the TAPR HF isolation transformer is up on the web site, that would be great.

I will send a follow-up email, Phil.  Right now, it’s juggling flaming, running chainsaws, 20 week old puppy care, work, kitting for TAPR products, and a more than minor problem with my right ankle that is and will continue to slow things down a bit.  I can’t quite hobble as fast as I was previously, so far.

I think we fire up KA9Q-radio and see if things work.  If that works, add wsprdaemon to the mix.  Since the RX888 gets its inputs from ‘the ether’ (rf-wise), it would be hard to come up with a method of playing a standard signal into it, to observe the output and compare to a template, or some set of expected results or observations.

Hi George,

Best wishes on all of that - we're a patient crowd.

Relative to the 2nd paragraph, I think it would be useful for someone with a calibrated RF signal generator to feed -73 dBm (S9, nominally) into it and then test the I/Q bit stream amplitude to make sure the requisite number of bits are toggled.  Perhaps I'll try that if I get a working RX888 out of all of this (I've done it a few times before in different contexts).  Rinse and repeat with a 50 ohm terminator on the front end: are the right number of bits occupied?

One thing we have thought to do for our systems is to have a known signal available.  Any CMOS oscillator, 5V or 3.3V, in the HF range (probably between 1 and 2 MHz, 1.8432MHz is a common frequency) with a series resistor to make it look like 50 ohms source can give a nice square wave harmonic comb (odd harmonics) of predictable level.

And the HF-RX-ISO (HF receiver transformer isolator) is now in the TAPR store.  There are 14 units available, as the gun is fired…

I ordered one this morning and just got an email saying it had shipped.
So maybe it's not too good to be true...

Wow! I got 14 orders overnight, and we are out of stock of the HF-RX-ISO.  We will be quickly re-ordering.  There are still some 10-12 RX888 clock kits in stock.

My suspicion is that the sudden availability of those RX888 units at $100 made for a perfect storm.  I’ll be busy for a few hours this morning ‘shipping’ things.  It will be good practice for when we get this batch of ezDV units I’m assembling tested and released.  Actually, it will be only about 20% practice. I’ll be releasing 45+ of those hopefully yet this week!  (and more to come; I better get used to it.)

Hi All-

Not to hijack this too much, but are there some instructions on how to
get one of these RX888's up and running?

Thanks and 73,

Speaking of empowering people, do you have access to fully
detailed technical specs for the RX888 Mk II ?

Try the TAPR webpage for the clock kit, which references good material.
https://tapr.org/product/rx888-clock-kit-and-thermal-pad/

Also, many install ka9q-radio (Phil Karn, KA9Q):
https://github.com/ka9q/ka9q-radio

and also install wsprdaemon from Rob Robinett, AI6VN:
https://github.com/rrobinett/wsprdaemon, which includes a version of ka9q-radio, I think.

Rob may well want to recruit you to his network of receivers; you should reach out to him, especially if you are getting one of those RX888Mk2 units for $90+tax.

That is a question much better posed to Dave Witten; I’m afraid I don’t have an answer.  There is a document of a similar chip, plus some allegorical information.  If we can do better than we have so far, the community would be grateful of any more recent and relevant information.

Hi all,

The SoapySDR interface is a standard one with many different drivers for various boards.

A lot of SDR clients use it.  Is there a way to use it with the RX888?  I have found only one driver:

but it's somewhat confusing in its description ("Tested on macOS with Gqrx: can now receive HF band" - which doesn't tell me whether it builds and runs under Linux).  Of course, one could simply use "radiod" from Phil's ka9Q-radio distribution and dump I/Q samples for further processing (and I'll probably do that), but I'm wondering whether anyone knows of a Soapy stable library.

There was an announcement on one of the other lists a few days ago that
the SoapySDR interface for the RX888 is now officially "there" and it
works with a number of Linux SDR applications (as well as Windows, I
think, using the "extio" driver interface). I don't know more details
than that, but everyone seemed to think it was great news.

Others here probably know a lot more about it...

John, I'm looking for the technical specs, not installation information.

That might come another day, but certainly not unless I can see and
approve the technical performance and behavior first.

KA9Q-radio records startup and error information to the Linux syslog.
Phil's software also includes his Linux command line tool 'control' which is used fo monitoring and control of all the KA9Q-radio systems on the local LAN.  From 'control
's  output one can verify proper operation and learn how to adjust internal settings and the effect of the LNA and filter needed for optimal sensitivity of the receive system.

Hi Rob,

In the "linear" demodulation mode (e.g. the one that produces I/Q samples in a bandlimited channel), what is the widest bandwidth you've used to date with the 888?

Phil has not implemented use of the RX888 downconverter.
It seems there are several excellent VHF/UHF SDRs already supported by KA9Q-radio.
Unlike the 0-30 bands where the RX888 is a unique product, it would at best only duplicate the functionality of an Airspy or SDRPlay on VHF/UHF.

FWIW, I sucked down the full AM broadcast band at 1.536 Ms/s as IQ
without any problems. The limiting factor is likely to be the host
computer and especially its disk I/O capabilities.

Agreed, but at $90 the RX888 is a lot less expensive than the Airspy R2
(I paid about $160 for one of those at Hamvention). It seems to have
similar frequency coverage and with its better ADC and wider bandwidth
it could be a very capable receiver.

Hi Phil,

At KFS I run  a $209 Beelink-brand AMD Ryzen 5 5560U miniPC configured to obtain a 64.8 Msps stream from the RX888.

In that system KA9Q-radio is configured to demodulate:

16 WSPR        bands from 160-10M     USB at   12000 sps to 16 bit WAV files
9   WWV/CHU bands from 2.5-25Mhz  I/Q    at   16000 sps to IQ  WAV file
4  SuperDARN bands from 9-16 Mhz   I/Q    at   48000 sps
8 WebSDR       bands from 80-10M      I/Q.   at 768000 sps
2 WebSDR       bands 630/160              I/Q   at 384000 sps
3 WebSDR       bands  30/17/12            I/Q.  at 192000 sps

Those streams together send almost 300 Mbps of demodulated Multicast IP packets to our IGMP-enabled ethernet switch.
The 6 core / 12 hyperthread host CPU is about 10% busy doing all that processing.

In another application for the Oct 2023 eclipse, I wrote a  program which captured the 65.8 Msps / 128 MBps sample stream from the RX888, flac-compressed it to about 80 MBps and streamed that to a 4 Tb USB-3 hard drive.  That programe did no signal processing, but used less than 50% of the CPU.

What signals at what sample rates would you like to capture?  I can easily add more receive channels to that KFS server and create a user account where you can examine the I/Q files recorded from those channels.

73,

Rob

So I have to ask, how do these devices work as a skimmer device?
I'm currently using a Red Pitaya 122-16 for 6-160 CW, RTTY, digital modes (too many to list).

I'm currently running both an RX888 and a RP 122-16 for skimming purposes. I'm running the Rx888 and 64MSamples/sec so it doesn't go up to 6M. I'm using Pavel's code on the RP so it only does FT8. I can do FT8/FT4/WSPR on the Rx888 with KA9Q-radio.

Contrary to what you may hear from others, the designer of the RX-888 has been forthcoming with information about his version of the design.

I can provide a PDF file that is a slightly earlier version of the schematic provided by the designer.  I also have copies of or can refer you to links where the originator of this family of designs (Oscar Stella , ik1xpv [now sk])comments on the changes in this device.  I can also provide links to several variations of this design by Oscar that show the thinking that led to the RX-888.  I find it difficult to read the RX-888 PDF as it seems to be from an unfamiliar CAD tool that does not export PDF's well.  Or maybe it has just been passed around too much.

I do wish that there was a better schematic, but there are very few mysteries here.

TAPR can quickly spin up a RX888 repository under our charitable github account.  Perhaps we should aggregate information there, and in the accompanying wiki?

It may exist before anyone can say ‘no’.  I do believe that RX888.org and .com and/or similar have been reserved by TAPR right after Hamvention.

To answer some questions as to ‘why RX888?’

Good question: a year ago at Hamvention 2023, there was a pow-wow among between the TAPR booth, HamSCI booth, and friends of both.  The idea was synthesized that we could use the RX888 with what we had already, and ka9q-radio being adapted to use the RX888(Mk2) to replace the Tangerine SDR, which was not going to exist in quantity before the needed deployment deadline, and possibly not at all, since Intel had purchased the Altera line, and put the Max10 series on life support.  Unobtanium.  Due to perfect storm of intel acquisition, COVID-19, and the TSMC fab facility fire all about the same time.

It turns out that with a few mods like the Turn Island/TAPR RX888 clock board to filter the Bodnar Mini GPDSO output, some thermal pad material, using silver-filled epoxy to attach the heatsinks on the RX888, possible HF receiver transformer isolation (TAPR), or Turn Island Systems’ HF filter board.

George,

Ok.  I guess that I should make a repo of mine and then send you pull requests?
Then you can merge them, I guess.

Hi Andy (and others),

You may very well be correct that this is a scam vendor.  I'm waiting for the unit I ordered to arrive and the tracking information they supply worries me.

I too have had excellent results with OpensourceSDRLab.  They even refunded my purchase when I returned a defective RX888.

So everyone should be cautious about ordering until I can report my order arrived.

Rob

If the deal seems to good to be true, its probably a scam.  I've had some luck with Ali, but avoid any dealers with a store name Shop######### Store, for which there are many and seem to be fly by night.  I believe some are catching on and creating real store names, but a few clicks to check reviews on this particular dealer led me to

which seems to indicate some think this is a fake/scam store too.  Good luck and please report back!

BTW, the only reliable dealer I've gotten RX-888s from on Ali was OpensourceSDRLab Store

I ordered one too.   Something isn't right.   Supplied Fedex tracking shows package was delivered to address in Washing dc area yesterday.   Not my package, was 61 lbs.
Mine, the RX888 is still due by 7/25.   Do I wait and see or raise a red flag with Ali now?
Finding where to do that with Ali is in itself a mystery.

Any advice?  I've always had good luck with Ali.

I presume it was on a credit card? If so, you can contest the charge within a reasonable period. Just don't wait too long or you won't be able to. Some lenders will try to drag the process out so you can't recoup your money.

Mine is supposedly ‘out for delivery’ in Windsor, CA, according to FedEx.  I live in Alexandria, VA.

Once it has been allegedly delivered I’ll apply for a refund with Ali then see what Paypal can do.

As the singer, formerly known as Cat Stephens, said, "it’s a wild world" out there!

Bob N4HY,  When I checked the store that sold it, it showed "on vacation"  As Ali recommeds, start with the vendor. That does not sound good.
Do you know where on Ali a complaint can be stated?  I've never had a problem to know where to go.

I'd think between Ali and PayPal, we should be protected.

The delivery to another address on a tracking number given to you is a seller scam I know well.

On AliExpress hark it delivered so that you can claim a refund and then show the tracking delivery information from the shipper to Ali . This worked for me in the past.

Thanks Lester.  So you are saying on Ali, MARK it as delivered then proceed to show it was delivered with a tracking number that was NOT my address?
Sorry for the ignorance here, I have not had to deal with this before.

I think the problem is the real people at Ali have not gotten in the loop yet.  The seller tried to buy me off with a 10% refund.  Refused.

Robert:

   Yes, on Ali you cannot start the refund  process for something you did not receive, until you mark it  as received;

The process to get their  maze, step by step is:

On order , awaiting deliver page:  click Order Details

Next to item ,  click: Returns/Refunds

On “Have You Received Your Package” : Click Yes  (Otherwise it loops you to just wait for delivery)

This brings you to Returns/Refunds:  Then you can get to indicate  what not is right because of fake delivery. It’s useful to  have captured the tracking dialog that shows where it was  actually  delivered and to point t the correct shipping address.    (Paste in the dialog with  tracking)

However I cannot step you through from this point now because their system now is crashing at that point.

Will catch up later when their system is back on line.

I can confirm scam. Seller supplies a false FEDEX tracking number, for a shipment delivered to false address.

Not to worry Rob, stuff happens.  I started the refund process by selecting "marked delivered, not received", waiting for an answer.  If I remember correctly AliX won't release funds to the vendor unless is marked as "Delivered". I also dis a screen cap from the FedEx page showing 2 large boxes delivered to the FL address.......it ain't an RX888 unless it got wet and grew some.

I was scammed by a fake site. I discovered it within a day and the credit card company denied the charge. I didn’t lose the money but did have to get a different card number.

Go to your orders page.  Find the order and choose ‘order details’.  When that loads, choose ‘returns/refunds’.  Choose ‘yes’ for have you returned your package.  Then report non-delivery or other dire things.  Do a screen grab of the fake FedEx tracking number, and what it shows for tracking, especially if it has already been delivered.  I suspect this scammer used just a few FedEx tracking numbers, and sent the same numbers to several or more of us.

I was scammed.  I have received the refund for the first, single unit order.  The second order is out for delivery today in Ft Morgan, CO.  I’m in Dexter, MI, so I’ve been certain since I saw where it was shipped to that this was a scam and fraud.  This second order I’ve also challenged on PayPal.  It is ‘out for delivery’ today, so I expect resolution shortly.

Somehow, the vendor keeps coming back with a refund counter offer, first 10%, then 90%.  No, I want 100%!  Hopefully, AliExpress gets the idea soon.

I chatted with Aliexpress about it and they escalated it so the next day I got my full refund.  If you have to wait the 5 days from when you started the issue and you can escalate then.  Seems like the vendor just wants to make at least something for their time.  Once I had a shipper like that, that some how found a tracking number that was delivered to my town, picture was not of my house, box was not even sized right for my item, but I lost out on that one.

Same thing here.  Except I have not gotten the 90% offer yet.  I did online chat with Ali custom service.  They seemed very egar to help and opened a case, assuring me this would be resolved (refunded).
All I can hope is that they are sincere and will do.  This is a pretty clear cut case of fraud.  I mentioned a good number of us got scammed so ours should not be the first they've heard of this.

Exactly the same thing happened with me -- offer of 10%, then 90%. I
rejected both and told them I wanted 100%.

Well Ali resolved my issue with the RX888 scam too. Case was closed and got notification of refund going to PP.
Was pretty clear cut a scam.  In my case I just did online chat to their customer service.  Got immediate help. Ali has been good so far and I'll continue to buy from them.

Personally,  I think the Rx-888 deserves consideration and is 'open enough' to start accumulating user feedback to HamSci.
