Rob,
Thanks for the heads-up.   A bought one as well.

As did I.  It is quite a deal.  Remember, TAPR has the RX888 clock kit, thermal pad, and soon (tomorrow?) the HF RX-only isolation transformer module with a Mini-Circuits T1-1 on it.  If you buy both together, TAPR will ship them together, within the USA, using USPS Ground Advantage, for free.  Your order must only be for these parts to get this deal.

Do note that this vendor has no feedback and is a very recent addition to the platform. I have found Aliexpress to be good about refunding my money when things don't work out.

Hi all,

Is there a software unit test documented somewhere for determining whether a RX888 is working correctly out of the box?  E.g. "run this, get this output, compare with this fixed file"?  It's hard to define a deterministic test when you're talking about RF sampling, but maybe something like terminate the input in 50 ohms and ensure power levels are no more than XXX ADC units, or something like that?

(trying to figure out how Philip Gladstone would know to return a unit, for example)

PS: George - if you can send another email when the TAPR HF isolation transformer is up on the web site, that would be great.

I will send a follow-up email, Phil.  Right now, it’s juggling flaming, running chainsaws, 20 week old puppy care, work, kitting for TAPR products, and a more than minor problem with my right ankle that is and will continue to slow things down a bit.  I can’t quite hobble as fast as I was previously, so far.

I think we fire up KA9Q-radio and see if things work.  If that works, add wsprdaemon to the mix.  Since the RX888 gets its inputs from ‘the ether’ (rf-wise), it would be hard to come up with a method of playing a standard signal into it, to observe the output and compare to a template, or some set of expected results or observations.

Hi George,

Best wishes on all of that - we're a patient crowd.

Relative to the 2nd paragraph, I think it would be useful for someone with a calibrated RF signal generator to feed -73 dBm (S9, nominally) into it and then test the I/Q bit stream amplitude to make sure the requisite number of bits are toggled.  Perhaps I'll try that if I get a working RX888 out of all of this (I've done it a few times before in different contexts).  Rinse and repeat with a 50 ohm terminator on the front end: are the right number of bits occupied?

One thing we have thought to do for our systems is to have a known signal available.  Any CMOS oscillator, 5V or 3.3V, in the HF range (probably between 1 and 2 MHz, 1.8432MHz is a common frequency) with a series resistor to make it look like 50 ohms source can give a nice square wave harmonic comb (odd harmonics) of predictable level.

And the HF-RX-ISO (HF receiver transformer isolator) is now in the TAPR store.  There are 14 units available, as the gun is fired…

I ordered one this morning and just got an email saying it had shipped.
So maybe it's not too good to be true...
