Hi John

Thank you for your thoughtful words on our fledgling PSWS initiative. I would be very pleased to talk with you about our efforts, individually and collectively. To be this close in geographic proximity and not have an exchange of ideas and experiences would not be in the spirit of Amateur Radio, Citizen Science and HamSCI.

While I am not currently a member of Holmesburg ARC, I am a lifelong Philadelphian licensed since 1975, so I am quite familiar with HARC and its important relationship to the SEPA region.

I am especially pleased that the University of Penn has expressed an interest in this. It goes a long way towards advancing the vision for HamSCI that I think Dr. Frissell has so clearly expressed.

My group's next step is to meet soon at or near The College of New Jersey to put together a plan and scope of action along with a preliminary budget based on a RX888/WSPRDaemon SDR configuration. I am assuming that you will do as well with HARC/U of P at some point? Also, some of us, myself included, will be traveling to the HamSCI workshop next month as well.

Rather than take up too much 'bandwidth' on this group forum, I will reach out to you directly in a day or two.

Thanks again and I will talk to you soon

73,

Dave Doler K3DFD

Hi everyone,

I've been quietly in the background long enough and thought I would introduce myself. I'm Dave Doler K3DFD, currently the Program Director for the Delaware Valley Radio Association W2ZQ in West Trenton, NJ.

The DVRA was very fortunate to host Dr. Frissell this past September for a very special presentation to our membership on HamSCI and the PSWS project. I was especially happy that our esteemed member and EME leader, Dr. Joe Taylor K1JT and Dr. Frissell were able to meet at the W2ZQ station prior to the event. That was a special evening for all of us.

I'm beginning the process of recruiting a sub-committee of DVRA members who are very interested in building what is required to participate in the HamSci PSWS initiative at the WSPRDaemon SDR level. Dr. Frissell has been very generous with his time for some discussions with me to this end.

Leading this effort will be myself, Josh Koslov PE NG2V and Robert Caivano K2KEM. The three of us attended the HamSci workshop at NJIT this past spring and will be in attendance as well at the upcoming workshop at Central Conn. State in New Britain, CT.

We will have lots of questions, perhaps initially on the sourcing of components, integration and so on. But in the meanwhile we will pour over the information available on the HamSci website, this group and at the workshop. My colleagues Josh and Robert et.al. will apply to join this group shortly.

Well thanks for letting me introduce myself along with our team. We look forward to our participation in this amazing project.

john Campbell <jthomas...@gmail.com>: Feb 03 10:22PM -0500

Dear David and Nathaniel:

David way to lead from the front and I will fall in and introduce myself.

John, W3MHZ, formerly KS3D. My ham bio is on my QRZ page I have been licensed since 1979 (I was 9).

Now I work with University of Pennsylvania as an alumni volunteer, specifically the Moore School, and the Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club (the WM3PEN repeater is at Penn 500 feet above sea level).

Penn has also been the beneficiary of Dr. Nathaniel's leadership in both thought and action. And Zooms ! I get a lot out of Nathaniel’s Zooms. "The Ham Sci Zoom Cheat Sheet” I call it and they are great.

We look to Nathaniel and W3USR as a model for what a great University Club be and are trying to contribute as well from the University of Pennsylvania, W3KZ (on Campus call sign).

I will be captaining our efforts and will be a steep learning curve for me.

David we are neighbors maybe we can compare notes.

Penn looks at attract more students, both undergraduate and graduate, with this fascinating project. Our alumni are very active around the world as well.

Dr. Jonathan M Smith, fellow ham and long term Penn Engineering professor, will lead us. “JMS” as we call him Penn’s ‘Nathaniel’. I met with Dr. Smith today an the project and he is interested.

Nathaniel: On equipment needs - I am following the Ham Sci buy list including this antenna (among others):
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-rseav-1

- For now we will put the PWS at my home (maiden FM29KW; 10th and Pine in Philadelphia 19147) so I can monitor the equipment for the daily uploads to the Ham Sci repository. Would like to put it at Penn in the future (2 miles away). Most of the W3KZ equipment is at my home, including the antennas. just easier for now.

==> My question for you is given we have Faculty support for this project is there anything else I could use / need from Penn ?

I cannot think of anything (other than the budget) but I am not intelligent enough on the issue as to what a University PWS station would need (less price sensitive $).

I get good DX and NVIS signals from my house (where W3KZ is currently located) and got the station Army MARS qualified so my home QTH works great and I work from home.

Looking forward to learning and seeing if Penn can contribute so citizen science !

John Campbell
