Hi physicists and astronomers,
I’m thrilled to share some extremely
exciting news – NASA has just announced that CINEMA, led by
our own Prof. Robyn Millan,
has been selected as the next NASA Heliophysics Small
Explorer mission to advance toward flight design.
CINEMA (Cross-Scale Investigation of Earth's Magnetotail and
Aurora) will be a constellation of nine polar-orbiting
satellites that will study the structure and evolution of
Earth's plasma sheet in the magnetotail. The project will be
led by Dartmouth with partners at Johns Hopkins Applied
Physics Lab, Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of
California, Berkeley, and the Utah State University Space
Dynamics Laboratory, with a total cost of up to $180 million
(not including launch). To my knowledge, this is the largest
NASA space mission ever led by Dartmouth.
CINEMA will open a groundbreaking new window into the Earth’s
magnetosphere and will provide amazing opportunities for
Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to engage with
cutting-edge NASA science. There is a great deal to be excited
about!
Please join me in congratulating Robyn and the whole CINEMA team!
Best,
Ryan
