Hello HamSCI Community:

HamSCI is making big plans for future research instrumentation:  A trio of instruments, hosted at geographically diverse locations, consisting of
  • RX888/WSPRDaemon/Grape receiver
  • VLF Receiver
  • Ground magnetometer
One challenge will be finding RF- and magnetically-quiet sites to host the trio. If you have a rural or perhaps a semi-rural ‘quiet’ location, and you’d like to be in on the ground floor of some great citizen science, please review the more detailed info at https://hamsci.org/hamsci-searching-instrumentation-sites-and-hosts

Noe that we are in the very early stages of defining the project and submitting a grant proposal to cover the costs.  So, at this point, implementation is far from a guarantee.  But…given HamSCI’s excellent track record at deploying instruments and building the data collection systems for projects such as the PSWS ground magnetometer, Grape 1 and Grape 2 HF doppler receivers, I like our chances of continued grant support.

Questions are welcome here on the forum.

Hi Gary. I have a good quiet QTH...and a set of three axis vlf coils. And lots of vlf/ulf/elf experience.

I’d be interested either at Clemson university or my home with. Both are effectively Clemson sc regardless

Thanks and 73

There are 4-5 potential sites from the NJIT side:

1) NJIT campus: urban area so not super ideal for quality data but good for student training, etc.
2) Jenny Jump Observatory, Hope, NJ.
3) Holland Patent, NY
4) Big Bear Solar Observatory, Big Bear Lake, CA.
5) Univ. New Hampshire, Durham, NH. (I need to discuss with my colleague)

Hi Kim

Not sure how the Big Bear Solar Observatory is staffed and equipped versus our HamSCI technology, but I live in the Los Angeles area and could provide hands-on support with just a couple hours (4) drive. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I’m interested. I need to confirm just how quiet my site is, but I’m fairly isolated from nearby neighbors and certainly from commercial activities. I’m also looking at implementing a weather site atop Pikes Peak that would be pretty good, too.

Hi Gary,

This would be a welcome addition to the Grape 2 system installed at Detatchment 1 of the Radio Science and Operations Center in Nikiski, AK!

Many thanks to all who have shown interest so far.  Two reminders:

1) The project details, such has they are (it's pretty early in the project life cycle) are at https://hamsci.org/hamsci-searching-instrumentation-sites-and-hosts
2) If you are interested (no obligation - we are in the 'exploration' phase):  Please fill out this Google form:  https://forms.gle/8UBeZRJqqCE1p7FK7

The project principals are hoping for 30 sites (assuming the project obtains funding).  One of the tricks in obtaining funding is showing strong interest from the community, hence the data gathering form - 73 de Gary, AF8A
