Posting Eclipse Data to Zenodo

Hi all, 
I'd like to encourage everyone who made radio observations during the August 12 eclipse to post your data to the HamSCI community on Zenodo. We can later gather everything into one DOI, as we did for the 2024 eclipse measurements (e.g., https://zenodo.org/records/14257092). Uploads are limited to 50GB each, but you can break a dataset into multiple uploads and link them using the "Related Identifiers" section. Zenodo is a service provided by CERN for scientific data storage according to FAIR standards; as you can see from the HamSCI community page, it's used extensively by the Meteor Scatter QSO Party. This will remove reliance on other storage services and make the data easier to find and analyze later. Please include documentation of your methods, equipment and observations. Note that, once a dataset is posted, the files cannot be retracted or changed, although changes can be made to the metadata.

Kristina,

During the eclipse, there was mention of a "spread spectrum" signal being sent on 14.110MHz USB between Spain and the USA. I recorded about 2 days worth of audio with my SDR at home while operating the MSQP at my other QTH. Would this recording be of any use?

It looks like that archive is for the 2024 eclipse. I have a recording made from VY0ERC in .wav (or .flac) format that I would like to submit, how do I do it?

Yep, the archive I linked is for the 2024 eclipse, just by way of example. We'll make another for 2026. 

First steps:
- There's a 50 GB limit, so break up or compress your files to <50GB sets as needed
- Sign up for a Zenodo account
- Upload your dataset and populate fields as directed. Include documentation of your setup in the description or an uploaded file, incl. receiver, grid square, callsign, etc
- (Optionally, sign up for an ORCID at www.orcid.org and include it in your author information. This can also be added later.)
- Submit the dataset to the HamSCI community and/or share with me if you have questions.

That should get things started. Thanks for collecting data!

Thank you for getting in touch (and thanks, Kristina, for pointing out his note).

The signal was sent to the specification of our group at Case Western Reserve University by the Technical University of Valencia, in southeastern Spain. They could only transmit 10 watts but directed their beam along the eclipse path, 320 degrees from their station.  Laura N8NFE and I set up to receive it in north central Spain, and another of our radio club members set up in Iceland also to receive and record the signal.  The transmission was only during the time of the eclipse, 12 August 2026, about 11:30-16:30 UTC.  We were not able to arrange for control periods on either side of the eclipse.

My recording has good reception of the signal early in the eclipse but probably not enough later to contain much propagation data.  Maris (our man in Iceland) says he has good signal but I haven't seen the data yet.

We also incidentally found a CW beacon station from Thailand transmitting on 14.113 MHz.  At my location, it had a small amplitude change at eclipse time.  That may provide some interesting additional information.

Please do send along any data you have from that period, or take a look at it with a waterfall program such as Audacity and see if there are any features of interest.  The path from Valencia to your location is off their beam direction but there may well be propagation shown that has detectable features.
