I got back from vacation and finally got to
my Grape 1 build. I made a couple of notes in case it helps anyone else doing
this build.
I used an AmScope SM-4TZ-144A microscope
and a Hakko 951-66
soldering station with a FM2032-51 Micro Soldering Hand piece
and Hakko micro R0.2mm/40x3mmx3mm bent,
solder tip.
I didn’t do an initial inventory of the parts
that I ordered. Somehow I failed to order the 2200pf capacitor and when I
opened the envelope with the 1K resistors the tape was empty. I had both in
inventory so didn’t slow things down.
It was a pretty easy and fun build, took
between 3 and 4 hours. I made a spreadsheet with the component labels, value
and Digi-Key/Mouser stock numbers so that could double check each component as
I added them. I started with caps, then resistors, ICs, inductors and finally
the through hole components. The only fiddly component was D1 – both it and the
pads are TINY. I heated a spot of flux on the board and used it to “glue” the diode
package in place while I tacked one of the leads. All but one of the inductors
were covered so to make sure I had good connection I put a very thin layer of
solder on both circuit board pads then flowed them with the inductors in place.
Something about the lighting on my scope made
the slanted edge of IC1 hard to see and I had to rotate it around a bit to
confirm.
I also placed headers on the audio out and
vin for a little more flexibility.
