I wanted to introduce to the HamSCI group, particularly those studying and researching ULF waves and magnetic pulsations, to an alternate observation technique using a Schumann Resonance/VLF receiver.

In the observations below by members of the VLF community and others using Schumann Resonance receivers, magnetic pulsations, affectionately called TLF "monsters" by this observer, these pulsations are visible and seem occur on a temperal scale that coincides with magnetometer observations. They occur at frequencies below the first Schumann Resonance (~7 Hz) and occured after some geomagnetic storming.

From what I understand, the magnetosphere "settles" after the pertubation of the CME, and I wonder if these are emissions related to something called "Pc5 pulsations". Terry Bullet provided this paper to another member of the VLF community as a possible explaination, but these may be related to the ULF waves observed by magnetometers. Am I correct or close in that reasoning?

As seen below, there are multiple observations of these TLF "monsters", observed with a Schumann Resonance receiver and Spectrum Lab to create the spectrograms. The observer was even able to sonify these "monsters" using sonification techniques and it sounds extremely interesting. With these sorts of emissions, the human ear (and brain) is a great signal processor, allowing subtle nuances to be picked out, much in the same way musicians can do the same.

This sort of observation can be incorperated in the VLF portion of the PSWS. Using the right receiver and antenna optimized for Schumann Resonance observation and attention to low end frequency response all the way down the analog chain to the soundcard, compressed spectrum plots can be generated. Because the frequencies are so low, the antenna is very microphonic, including both E-field antennas and loops. If implemented correctly, these observations could be an extremely useful piece of the many puzzles of the magnetosphere.

Please see and hear the observations below:

Hello Peter,
this "monsters" as I call them are called magnetic pulsations. They can be of different aspects but are related to the interactions of the magnetosphere with the solar wind. The magnetosphere part facing the sun is compressed by the solar wind and this makes the magnetic field lines to oscillate and induce these waves.

Also charged particules flowing along the magnetosphere may radiate these waves but I'm not sure about that and how to identify the origin of them according to the spectrogram.

They are quite well visible when solar activity is high like these days ago. Reception by F6ETU is very good :

And also in Italy :

I don't know much about that signals, but I like to do some sonification of them by speed increasing (500 to 1000 times) each 24h recordings from F6ETU. You can hear here :

In french we call this signals "oscillations en perles" because on the oscilloscope they looks like pearl necklace.

Hello,
every morning some TLF monsters wakes-up from the near DC world and try to jump above the first Schuman résonance. Some do, some other fails. They are well catch by the F6ETU antenna.

Some what fainter they can also be observes here :

Pc5 pulsations are defined to be those magnetic field oscillations with periods between 300 and 600 seconds.  Pc1 pulsations are defined to be in the range 0.2-5Hz range.  Often have frequencies order 1Hz, which is about the proton gyro frequency in the magnetosphere.
