I found the recent HamSci workshop very informative, especially the use of WSPRdaemon data to assess the local noise level at the receiving site. One downside of WSPR-based systems, however, is that the antennas and receivers are not necessarily the same for all stations.
Last year, I attended the hamfest in Friedrichshafen and came across a noise measurement initiative being run by DARC. The system is called "Electrical Noise Area Measurement System" (ENAMS) and involves the use of a vertical whip antenna and an SDR to measure the environment.
The downside of this system is the price (1990 euros)!!
It will be interesting to follow the DARC effort and see how their system works. Perhaps comparisons to WSPRdaemon in the same region(s) would make for an interesting study.
