Hello, my name is Adarsh Pashikanti and I am a high schooler at Troy High School in Southern California. I've recently become interested in radio but I've always been interested in physics and electronics. I got my license a few months ago as well as joined this group to see some of the research going on in the field. Reading all the stuff in here has been very informative and I want to know if there's any way in which I could start being involved given the fact that there is a lack of as much experience on my part. If anyone has any suggestions or opportunities I'm willing to learn in any way possible.

Thanks,
Adarsh Pashikanti

Hi Adarsh,

Good to hear from you! We have a page with meeting information here: https://hamsci.org/get-involved

If you are interested in hardware, you might consider building a node for the Personal Space Weather Station network: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ohx.2022.e00289
We could definitely use another station in California. You can see some of the data collected by the network (and the software to visualize it, if that's of interest) in this preprint: https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-2022-303

There are several other opportunities as well (Solar Eclipse QSO Party, upcoming HamSCI Workshop, etc), so I'll leave it to others to chime in.

Good Day, Adarsh.  It was good to read your post.  Many of the citizen scientists involved with HamSCI started out just like you - more curious than knowledgeable.  Their curiosity paid big dividends.  We have all learned a lot, and many are currently contributing to the research efforts, or will be contributing in the near future.

I suggest you look at HamSCI.org/Eclipse to learn about the ham radio operating events we have planned for the upcoming eclipses.  The FAQ pages have links which will explain many of the details behind the events,  Take a look at the GSSC FAQs - the links regarding WSPR and FST4W.  Those modes give you an option of setting up a transmitting and/or receiving station. Neither options are expensive or overwhelmingly complex.  Learning opportunities abound.

As Kristina said, the various HamSCI Zoom calls are great places to listen, ask questions and join the growing community.

Regards,

Gary, AF8A

Thanks for all the help! I do have a bit of soldering experience so i think i'll take up building a node as a project, it seems something interesting and doable. I'll be sure to log into some zooms to get more of an idea of what's going on as well. Thanks once again.
