Hello HamSCI Community - Here's a brief reminder that the US will be on holiday Thursday the 27th, so the regular HamSCI telecons are on holiday as well. We should have a normal schedule next week.

Another reminder, I hope many are practicing their 6 and 10 meter digital communications skills (transmit and receive!), as the next running of the Meteor Scatter QSO Party will be held in a few weeks, December 12-13.

Lastly, an observation:  You never know where the subjects of physics and ham radio will turn up - in the same book.  I am reading Collision, the life story of Nobel Prize winning experimental physicist Luis Alvarez (1911-1988). (He won the Nobel in 1968, for his work in elementary particle physics).  Regarding his early life and relationship with his father Walter, the book says:

"Luis...began tinkering with electronics, building circuits in the family workshop, and learned to bond with his father over their shared interest in science.  [They] used plans from a magazine to build a crystal radio set - a formative experience for many physicists...Luis later regretted that he didn't follow up by becoming a ham radio operator, which would have given him skills that turned out to be tremendously useful" (emphasis mine).

Perhaps, when picking out presents for the young ones in your life, the gift of a crystal radio set, and/or a ham radio license manual, is worthy of serious consideration!

Terrific suggestion, Gary.

I’ve been looking for kits to recommend for children aged 9-11 that are well-built and have good documentation.

Here is a link to a store that offers a range of kits for introducing youngsters to science: thinkbluemarble.com

For electronics, this kit looks promising:

I welcome suggestions from the HamSCI community for other resources to recommend to parents and teachers.
