Congratulations are in order for Emma Moran, recently hired University of Scranton Physics/EE Research Assistant.  Her paper (and that of her three co-authors) is titled ‘Deep Learning Improves Photometric Redshifts in All Regions of Color Space’.  Emma was at the University of Pittsburgh when she and her collaborators wrote the paper.

Those with an interest in extragalactic astronomy (the study of objects and phenomena outside the Milky Way), or image analysis using deep learning vs classical machine learning methods, might find it interesting.   If nothing else, the comparison of the two methods via heat maps (Section 3.2.2) where the color axis denotes 'Galaxies per Pixel' is worthy of contemplation!

Machine learning techniques have been applied to HamSCI's Doppler shift data, though I don't recall the results.  Perhaps with guidance from Emma, those techniques can someday be brought to the forefront.

The paper is open-access, available at this link

I agree, Emma did awesome! But, Scranton really had nothing to do with this paper…  she did all of this work at while at Pitt. But, we are very fortunate to have Emma join us!
