New To Amature radio

I got my licenses back in 2010, however this month I finally ordered my first radio (ft-60r).

My house is about 6.25 miles from the 146.880 repeater but I have yet to make contact with anyone. Is that distance too far with stock antenna? or am I doing something wrong? I know radio wave propagation depends on lots of variables, so I guess my question is can I responsibly be expected to reach the repeater or am I dreaming?

Thanks for everyone who has replied. It looks my radio is doing the wrong repeater offset.
