Linda,
I don't know if this helps, but my grandfather's name was Marion Arthur Hampton, b. 1898 in Iowa. I do not know of any other family members with the name Marion, but I am certain none of his descendants were named after him except my father and my oldest brother (neither of which is your grandfather - I hope [my mother and my sister-in-law would be really upset!])
I also do not recognize the name Turnbo.
Of course, Wade Hampton was a General in the Civil War for the South and his grandfather was in the American Revolution and his father (all Wades) was in the War of 1812. There is some debate among my brothers about the connection between our Hampton line and General Hampton. But I do know that his name was used quite a bit among all Hampton
descendants after the war.
My branch of the family started in this country as two brothers who came into New Jersey in the late 1600s from Scotland. One family stayed north in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Iowa. The other family went south into Virginia, N. Carolina, and Kentucky. Eventually (being "good Christian people" and having families of 6-10 children, they pretty much populated the country east of the Mississippi (and still working on the western half). Also, being wanderers, they were pioneers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Iowa, so they spread out quite a bit.
It was not uncommon for family names to be shared, so Marion Hampton may be related. If you can trace your family to Iowa, I would say there is a good chance. There were several generations of Hamptons there, so my grandfather may be an uncle or cousin.
Matthew
