Hi Everyone!

Thanks for joining in! I was listening to the Ruby Rogues podcast (http://rubyrogues.com/), and someone on there said something along the lines of: "If you're not going to a local ruby user group you're missing out on half the point of ruby - the community." This made me think that there should be enough of us locally to get a user group started in Hampshire.

So first and foremost I'm keen that this be community driven from the start! I'm more than happy to do some of the rallying of troops and finding spaces etc., but I think its important that the group takes shapes around the ideas of the members.

I'd be really interested to hear your ideas about what you want from a ruby user group.

What are you hoping to get out of joining a local user group?

What kinds of meetups would you like to see?

Where would you like to meet?

Over to you guys?

Steve

Hello! Thanks for starting a group :-)

dunno

...but, I'll have a ponder.

I lurk around on the Hants Linux user group, and it always seems quite ... formal...
If there's meet-ups from here, I'd rather they were at a pub on a Sunday lunchtime than on a Saturday morning in an un-used office conference room (I see too many of them during the week ;-)

Cheers,

Discussing new ideas and problems with other developers.

Nothing too formal. Wouldn't mind some small coding sessions now and
again, but apart from that, am happy talking.

For coding sessions, probably need an office (depending on numbers).
For chat, pubs are good in my mind.

Hi All

Where would you like to meet?

Not knowing where everyone is makes it hard to suggest venues I guess. Could we use http://meetinbetween.us to find a point that worked for everyone? Looks like it's free to setup an account that allows you to save and share maps.

I tried creating an account but I couldn't figure out how to save/share a map? Usually this sort of thing is caused by me being stupid.

Hi Everyone!

My Name is Amanda Fischer and I've recently gotten in touch with Richard Patching and he advised me to get in touch. I think it's brilliant about creating this group and also planning meetings. My company is based in Southampton and is made up of a ruby development team and we are really interested in getting connected with the ruby community, specifically around Hampshire and the south. We are planning a coding and beer night at our offices or renting out a place locally (if we get enough interest) and having a night of networking, socializing and talking ruby! Please let me know if you would be interested in coming and about possible dates. We are thinking around 17th or 19th of July. I hope to hear from everyone soon!

Cheers,
Amanda :)

We are planning on hosting a beer and coding night, a networking event, at our offices in Southampton or somewhere local if we get a lot of interest! Keen to share ideas and thoughts about ruby and get to know fellow ruby devs. We were thinking about either the 17th or 19th of July? Please let me know if this would be of interest!

Hi Amanda,

Its great to see there's more people using Ruby in the area!

A hacking event sounds great, I'd definitely be interested in coming along.

Hi Luke,

Thanks for getting in touch! The RubyMotion has a lot of potential and looks cool but is not commercially viable at this stage! Keep you updated on the date for the event!

Kind regards,
Amanda

Hi Steve,

I wanted to get back in contact and see if you are planning any networking events coming up? I know we are still keen to have one come september time, when things are a little less hectic here. A few of our guys would be interested if you are still meeting every so often. Hope all is well and hope to speak soon.

Kind regards,

Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Yes! We're planning to get together again soon, just trying to find a venue that doesn't turn into a live Jazz venue at 8pm! I think Rich is going to post something soon.
