Microsoft has released new Teams for VDI in early December 2023. The new version of Teams has been re-implemented and promises improvements in performance, memory consumption, usability, and security. Two important limitations exist for new Teams in your Citrix environment:
VDI 1.0 means that the Teams (new or Classic) is optimized with Citrix HDX (WebRTC Optimization). The media engine (HdxRtcEngine) on the endpoint responsible for handling offloaded media is embedded in Citrix Workspace app and installing Citrix Workspace App automatically installs the engine as well. This was the solution that has existed since the beginning of Teams optimization support.
VDI 2.0 means that the Teams will be optimized with VDI 2.0 Optimization, a Microsoft solution built leveraging Citrix Virtual Channel SDK and is based on the existing Media Engine which powers Microsoft Teams (native client) today. This solution is not GA yet from Microsoft. However, as this optimization needs a new media engine (VDI 2.0) on the endpoint which will be responsible for handling offloaded media, Citrix is providing an easy way to deploy the Teams VDI 2.0 Plugin (check CWA 2402 LTSR enhancements section below).
-us/microsoftteams/new-teams-vdi-requirements-deploy. This installation is much different that the previous version of Microsoft Teams Classic as the New Teams installer uses MSIX technology. All installation, configuration and all product documentation for new Teams will be provided by Microsoft.
Important: To enable optimized new Teams with VDI 1.0 you must configure the following registry key on releases in which this fix is not present.
You need to enable this feature via registry by setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\HDXMediaStream\EnableSystemAudio (DWORD) to 1. For end users, this option is not enabled by default, they must turn it on before sharing their screen.
VDI 2.0 Plugin Install - With CWA Windows 2402 installer, users can click the check box to install the VDI 2.0 plugin. This plugin will download the VDI 2.0 engine when it detects New Teams installed on the VDA.
Note: Microsoft has not made VDI 2.0 for General availability yet. However, the plugin install through CWA LTSR is in preparation for the future! Please reach out to your Microsoft representative to get enrolled to test VDI 2.0 and provide valuable feedback.

You can now install Microsoft Teams 2.x and/or OutlookForWindows UWP applications in their own App Layers (or together) using the AL 2403.2 patch release or later. The patch update can be downloaded from the App Layering downloads page.
