Happy Fall, ya-da-ya-da-ya-da,
--First off: TODAY, Wednesday September 16th at 4pm in the student
center lobby will be our first SPROUT gathering of the year. We will
get to know each other, eat some garden-fresh salsa (made completely
from SPROUT garden ingredients) and figure out our plan of action/
education/awesomeness for Fall Semester and beyond. Can I get a woot
woot??
*******There are 4 "Core Group" leadership roles that need to be
filled. Without these positions filled THE GROUP SIMPLY CANNOT SUSTAIN
ITSELF. Period. They are tenatively defined as such:
Fundraising/Bookkeeping: Coordinates getting our budget through HUSC,
applying for additional grants if/when necessary, doling out money
when SPROUT projects need it, collecting/tracking donations given to
SPROUT by individual donors or from events
Events/Promotions: Organizes SPROUT sponsored events outside of
regular gatherings and harvests and promotes the shit out of them.
This includes ensuring a SPROUT presence at fall and spring org fairs
on campus and occasional interaction/collaboration with the wider
Hamline community (campus AND neighborhood)
Member and Volunteer Coordination: Gathers a master list of volunteers
for SPROUT events and notifies volunteers of SPROUT events. Sends out
reminder emails/facebook messages/blogs/etc.. about gatherings,
harvests, and events RECRUITS new members to SPROUT at the beginning
of the semester (talking to FYSEMs, putting up posters, staffing org
fair table, etc...) In collaboration with Growing Projects Team,
creates a volunteer schedule for maintaining the gardens over the
summer.
Gardens and Growing Projects: In 2009 (our first growing season)
SPROUT had three different growing sites: one large plot located
behind the Hamlne United Methodist Church, one smaller plot behind the
Modern Languages House and the Hmong Student Assciation houses on
minnehaha, and 10 planters with ornamental edibles placed on campus by
facility services between bush library and the law/grad building. This
GGP team decides on the growing projects for the upcoming year,
determines needs in order to follow through on them (seeds, soil,
tools, people power, water, other materials), and then coordinates
with other SPROUT teams (fundraising/book keeping for existing funds,
donations, or to apply for grants, Events/Promotions for events
centered around various growing projects, and Member and Volunteer
Coordination to get support you need to maintain the growing projects)
and campus contacts (Facility Services, Biology Department, etc...) to
get what they need in order to get them done.
*******Please start thinking about what role you would like to play in
SPROUT during this semester and beyond, whether it is as a part of the
core group, a gardener, or a contributor to philosophical
conversations on the state of our world.
--On a lighter note, 2 more spots are available if people are
interested in going to a showing of the documentary Food Fight at the
Riverview Theater in Mpls, sponsored by Gardening Matters, tomorrow
night after the meeting. The website for the doc is
www.foodfightthedoc.com/foodfight.html
The film is at 7pm I think but we would leave from Hamline at 6:30 at
the latest. THe cost is $10 I think. If more people are interested in
going and more people drive, then the offer is unlimited. We'll chat
more at the meeting but if you reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly
wanna reserve your spot or won't be at the meeting or are

--Faithful SPROUT member Abbie Plouff has started a SPROUT blog!! This
will be a great tool for documenting our development, tracking our
progress, sending out reminders of gtherings, and maintaing a creative
outlet for our work! It is at
http://hamlinesprout.wordpress.com More
details to come at meeting.
--Finally, we are hosting a "Field Trip to the Farm" event THIS
Sunday, September 20th. We will be meeting at the bishop at 9am to
depart for Cedar Summit Creamery and the Gysland Bros Vegetable Farm
in S. Minnesota. this is in conjunction with the Wesley center (who is
paying for our gas and an ice cream cone for everyone that goes!!) We
will be back by early afternoon. If you wanna go and haven't rsvpd
already, please respond to this email so that we can be sure to have
room for you in the van.
That's all for now folks.
With as much love as a gushingly ripe tomato can muster,
