Enter to win a $100 gift certificate to Custom Drapery and Blinds by 1) wearing a nametag listing your name and a favorite book, 2) engage in conversation with a person you’ve never met, and 3) bring your new acquaintance back to the HMC table to enter your names in the drawing.
Haunted Harvest Menagerie – Come experience a brand new fall gathering - think bonfire, live music, arts, food, and a haunted room! Join us Saturday, October 27 from 5:30-9:30pm at Hancock Rec Center (1610 Hubbard Ave). We’ll be celebrating the local harvest by making Stone Soup (bring your veggies) and serving up roasted potatoes, squash, and hotdogs – free or affordably priced. Brought to you by Hancock Rec Center, Midway Frogtown Arborators Band, Hamline Midway Coalition, and the Midway Local Food Resource Hub. Check out the full schedule of entertainment and activities here or call Faith at 651-494-7683 for more information.
Hamline Midway’s First Permeable Pavement Alley Scheduled for Construction – The alley on the Hamline Midway Library’s block will be reconstructed using permeable pavement technology this month thanks to the efforts of HMC’s Community Building Committee and staff, Capitol Region Watershed District, and the City of St. Paul. This project will allow stormwater and its accompanying pollutants to soak into the ground rather than run off into local lakes and rivers and will serve as a pilot project for possible future implementation.
Environment
Water Your Trees! The Forestry Department is asking for help with watering trees during this abnormally dry period. Saturday’s projected rain will be a drop in the bucket. Water your boulevard trees in addition to your private trees. Larger trees should be watered 2-3 times per week for 1-2 hours using a slow trickle of water by the base area of the tree. Smaller trees should be watered every other day for 30 – 60 minutes using a trickle or a slow stream of water around the drip line (where water would drip during a rain event).
Changing Colors from Above - Come view the fall colors from atop the 127-foot Highland Water Tower during their autumn open house from 9 am-5 pm, Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14. This observation deck provides visitors with a wonderful view of the area, looking down on changing colors of the trees dotting the Highland Park golf course below and toward the Mississippi. This historic landmark is located at the intersection of Snelling and Ford Parkway. Admission is free for all ages. A 151-step staircase leads to the observation deck. For more information, call the St. Paul Regional Water Services at 651-266-6350.
