HMC Events & Opportunities

 

Neighborhood Clean Up - The Annual Neighborhood Cleanup at the State Fairgrounds is happening on Saturday, September 22 this year from 8am to 1pm. You'll have the opportunity to reuse, recycle, and dispose of items from old bikes to car seats to construction demo materials- check out our website for the full list of accepted items and costs, and look in your mailbox for the green flyer to bring to the event. If you volunteer at the Cleanup you can bring a load for free!  Shifts are 7:30-11am or 10:30am-2pm and include free breakfast or lunch.  Email micha...@hamlinemidway.org or call 651-494-7682 to sign up for a shift. Volunteers for the second shift are particularly appreciated.

Leaves! Our dry summer is causing many trees to begin dropping their leaves- be on the lookout for info on a community leaf cleanup and proper leaf disposal campaign in the next few weeks, but in the meantime check out the U of M's ideas on disposing of leaves.  Help prevent pollution of our waterways by keeping your leaves out of the street.

Call for Artists for the Resurrecting Beauty Art Exhibit - Artists Yang Mee-Moua Yang and Nonmala Xiong, in partnership with the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT), seek  5 artist submissions for the “Resurrecting Beauty” Art Exhibition to be held on October 12-14, 2012 at CHAT in St. Paul, MN. Fourth Annual Library Love Fest & BNSF Railway Library Love 3K – Run, Walk, or Stroll to Support the Hamline Midway Library! Hamline Midway Library Association is hosting their annual celebration of community on Saturday, October 13 at the Hamline Midway Library, 1558 W. Minnehaha Ave. The 3K event begins at 9:00am with music, used book sale, food, games, artisans and more to follow. Hamline Midway Library Happenings – Call 651-642-0293 or stop by the library at 1558 W Minnehaha Ave, near the intersection of Snelling and Minnehaha, to sign up for events that require pre-registration. All events are free.

  • Toddler & Preschool Storytimes - Toddler and preschool storytimes are held at 10:30am every Friday. Share the joy of reading with your child!
  • Capoeira for Kids – Saturday, September 15, 2:00-3:00pm. Join instructors from Omulu Capoeira Gauanabara MN as they give a demonstration and introduction to the Afro-Brazilian movement art of capoeira. Capoeira incorporates music, dance, martial arts, and music all in one. The class will be geared towards children with simple and fun movements and sequences. Parental permission required. Ages 5-12.
  • Creative Movement for Children - Expand your vocabulary for both your body and brain! Move with a variety of music to strengthen physical coordination and activate the mind. Activities incorporate both the imitation of movements and guiding children to move in their own style. Group and individual movements are incorporated into mini-choreographic challenges. Come leap, twirl and explore with us! For Ages 5-11. Parental permission required.

Feline Rescue’s Community Open House and Neighborhood Spay Day - Feline Rescue is planning a Community Open House and Neighborhood Spay Day on Sunday, October 14 from 10:00am-1:00pm at 593 Fairview Ave. North. Come tour the shelter, learn about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and find out how you can help when you see a stray cat in your community. A low-cost spay/neuter clinic will be offered that day, where up to 40 Hamline-Midway area cats can be spayed or neutered by MN SNAP (Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program).

 

Ramsey County Election Judges Needed

Election judges work all day, from 6:00am to approximately 9:00pm. Prior to serving a two-hour paid training session must be completed.   • Workshops Address Living Well with Chronic Conditions - A free, six-week workshop addressing how to live with chronic illnesses will be offered Wednesdays from October 3 through November 7, 6-8:15 p.m. at 1514 Englewood Ave. Sessions are designed for Hamline Midway residents 60+ with chronic conditions such as arthritis, depression, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, asthma and lung disease who desire a group setting in which to learn and support on another. Chronic Disease Self Management is a research-based program developed at Stanford University.  Co-leaders have been trained through the MN Dept. of Health.   • Hamline Midway Elders hosts luncheons every second Tuesday of the month at 11:30 at Hamline Methodist Church, 1514 Englewood Avenue. “Pet Therapy: A Visit With Sasha,” will be the topic on Sept 11. Speaker presentations are free and begin at 12:15, a free will donation is requested for the meal. Call (651) 209-6542 to make reservations, request free transportation or inquire about a caregiver support group which meets every second Thursday from 6:30 – 8:00PM.
  • A chair based yoga class will begin September 11 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM and will run for six weeks at 1514 Englewood Ave. There is no charge. Please call HM Elders to register. (651) 209-6542.
  • A Caregivers Support Group will take place every SECOND Thursday from 6:30-8.30 p.m. at 1514 Englewood Ave. The group will be facilitated by trained volunteers and is intended for people caring for seniors, adults, or children with special needs.   • Hamline Midway CONNECTS - “Caring for our Neighbors and Neighborhood” networking group for persons 50+  now meets at Groundswell Coffee, Hamline & Thomas every third Thursday from 10:30-Noon.  All welcome! For more information, contact Stephanie Digby at 642-1288.

Western District Police-Community Meeting - Attend community meetings at the Western District headquarters (389 N. Hamline Avenue) every third Tuesday of the month at 9:30am and 6:30pm to hear the latest crime news and prevention tips. This is your chance to have your concerns and questions heard by Senior Commander Todd Axtell and other officers. The next meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, September 18.
