What's Happening on Your Block for National Night Out, 2013?
August 6
The city of St. Paul is looking to continue its 29 year legacy of building stronger communities through it's participation in the annual National Night Out. It takes place the second Tuesday of every August. The event is a chance for neighbors to connect by hosting and participating in a variety of community-initiated events throughout the city. In the past, residents have organized block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials and much more. What you do with your neighbors is limited only by your collective imaginations.
If you are looking to host an event in Hamline Midway, find all the information you need and register at
http://www.stpaul.gov/index.aspx?NID=5194. Last year St. Paul was ranked number one by the National Association of Town Watch for its outstanding participation. An estimated 300 events and 34,475 people participated citywide. If you are hosting an event and want to spread the word to your neighbors, let the Hamline Midway Coalition help. Email Kyle Mianulli at
ky...@hamlinemidway.org with details of your event.
Poetry for Thought Bringing Inspiration for Dialogue, Connection and Local Action to New Location
August 2
6:00-8:30pm
515 Lafond, St. Paul, MN 55103
Free and open to the public
Poetry for Thought is migrating to a new location and time. The events, organized by Hamline Midway resident Justin James, continue to gain momentum, participants and attention from the community. They will still be held the first Friday of every month, but will now be occupying a vacant lot in the Frogtown neighborhood at 515 Lafond Ave. James has already brought in some of the biggest spoken word acts in the region, and this month is no different. There will be spoken word and theater performances which, in typical PFT fashion, will be followed by a community discussion based on what was said, what it means, how it relates to our lives and what we can do about it. This month's featured performers include
Katie Hae Leo, a writer and performer born in Korea and raised in the Midwest. Her work has garnered wide-ranging accolades including from the Minneapolis
Star Tribune. Local Hip Hop pioneer
Fres Thao will also be performing. He brings with him more than 15 years of experience performing and producing on the local and national level. In addition to his successful performing and recording career, Thao is also the Executive Director of the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent, the first and only multidisciplinary Hmong arts organization in the world. The talent doesn't stop there. Donte Collins, who is now the highest ranked youth poet in the twin cities, will also be performing. He is gearing up to compete in the 2013 international spoken word competition Brave New Voices. Get more information on events and stay up to date with the latest from Poetry for Thought at their
Facebook page.
