Block Club Organizer Training & Recognition Event

Are you interested in starting a block club? Do you already organize events on your block? Come to HMC's annual block club organizer training and recognition event on Thursday, November 29 from 6:00-8:00pm. Dinner will be served, location TBD. This is a great chance to get to know other block club organizers, brush up on your organizing skills, and celebrate the important work of neighborhood community builders. Wood Smoke – This is the time of year many residents fire up their wood stoves. Want to learn how to reduce the impact of wood smoke on air quality and help your neighbors breathe easier? Check out Living Green 365’s article, “Wood smoke and the air we breathe.”

 

 

Arts

 

University Avenue Documentary Screenings - Myers Communication Group, along with the Ramsey County Historical Society, is hosting four showings of a documentary called University Avenue: One Street, a Thousand Dreams. This work, which will be run on TPT 2 in December, looks back at the once thriving nature of the street, and how it’s going through some revitalization. Showings will be at two locations: The Wilder Foundation (451 Lexington Parkway N.) on Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 am, and Monday, November 19 at 7:00pm; and at Gordon Parks High School (1212 University Ave. W.) on Thursday, November 8 at 7:00pm. Jazz on the Line - Come and join friends and neighbors at the Mai Village restaurant (394 University Ave) every third Thursday for a night of jazz and Brazilian music! The music starts at 6:30pm and runs until 10:00pm. There is no cover charge, but you are encouraged to support the restaurant by ordering dinner and drinks. Hamline Midway Library Happenings – Call 651-642-0293 or stop by the library at 1558 W Minnehaha Ave, near the intersection of Snelling and Minnehaha, to sign up for events that require pre-registration. All events are free.

  • Paw Pals – Come join us for Paw Pals, where a child can read with our volunteers Marsha and Toby (our loveable volunteer dog). Sign up today ; dates are Saturdays, October 27, November 17 and December 15 from 1:30-3:00pm.
  • Storytimes - Storytimes are held at 10:30am every Friday. Share the joy of reading with your child!

Hamline Midway Elders Events & Opportunities: All events are free, open to the public, held Hamline Church (1514 Englewood Ave) unless otherwise noted. Call 651-209-6542 for more information.

  • Hamline Midway Elders hosts luncheons every second Tuesday of the month at 11:30am. Speaker presentations are free and begin at 12:15pm; a free will donation is requested for the meal. “Caring for Our Skin as it Ages” will be the topic at the November 13 luncheon. Call to make reservations and request free transportation.
  • A Caregivers Support Group will take place every SECOND Thursday from 6:30-8.30pm. The group will be facilitated by trained volunteers and is intended for people caring for seniors, adults, or children with special needs.
  • Hamline Midway CONNECTS - “Caring for our Neighbors and Neighborhood” networking group for persons 50+ now meets at Groundswell Coffee, Hamline & Thomas every third Thursday from 10:30-Noon. All welcome! For more information, contact Stephanie Digby at 642-1288.

All You Care to Eat Turkey Dinner

St. Columbia (1330 Blair Avenue) will be hosting a turkey dinner buffet on Saturday, November 10 in their school auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 and bingo will follow until around 10:00pm. Western District Police-Community Meeting - Attend community meetings at the Western District headquarters (389 N. Hamline Avenue) every third Tuesday of the month at 9:30am and 6:30pm to hear the latest crime news and prevention tips. This is your chance to have your concerns and questions heard by Senior Commander Todd Axtell and other officers. The next meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, November 15.
