Streaming platforms are changing the way we watch television. With access to thousands of TV shows, movies and documentaries, we can watch just about anything we want, commercial-free, at any time, day or night.

There's a good chance you spent the past year streaming more video than ever before. In fact, according to market research firm Nielsen, the total amount of time people spent per week streaming video in 2020 increased by nearly 75% compared with 2019.

Watching anywhere between two and six episodes of a TV series in one sitting is a behavior called binge watching, and it can have a negative impact on your health. Before you curl up for your next binge, here are three health considerations you should know.

As a result, marathon viewing can adversely affect your relationships, goals and commitments. You may struggle to control how much time you spend watching TV, or you may find that you need to continually increase the time you spend watching TV to experience the same degree of satisfaction. You may become defensive, irritable or unreasonable when asked to stop, and you may even start lying to cover up your binging.

However, binge watching makes it easy to disconnect from other people. With multiple streaming accounts and multiple ways to view a show, it's easy to retreat to your corner of the house and zone out for hours at a time.

Research shows that watching back-to-back episodes of your favorite show may excite your brain, and as a result, interfere with your ability to sleep. Squeezing in just one more episode can cause you to stay up late at night, leaving you feeling tired and drained the next day.

do you offer access to Netflix in your listing? If so do you use your own account? Pay for another account? Make them sign in with THEIR account? I have a Netflix account myself and a ROKU I can hook up -- I just today got my first inquiry about Netflix in the unit. I'm wondering how others do it.

I have an additional device account, one for guests. If a guest doesn't have their own account, they can request me to set up access to ours as a guest viewer. Although after 2 years and many bookings, I have had only 2 requests for me to set them up. Most have their own account these days.

We have a guest account for Netflix and Hulu and an old iPhone with nothing else on it signed in for guests to cast to the tv, via google chrome-cast. Old fashioned but does the job at low cost. (We have no tv service.)

Hi Emilia, I'll just be starting to offer Netflix for my guest this coming month and thinking of the same set-up as yours (guest will have access to my account, but with a different user profile). I'd like to ask if you had any instances where your guests have messed with the other profiles on your Netflix account. If yes, what did you do? Or if not, what have you done to prevent this.

@Jose-Feliciano0, just this week I noticed the Grinch was watched on my specific Netflix profile and there were two young children staying in one of my Airbnbs at that time. It doesn't bother me and doesn't happen often. No one has ever messed with my settings or anything like that. I would say it is more frustrating when they log out of my account and into their own. I have to check every time I am turning over the space for a new guest that Netflix is correctly logged into the right account. I would never give my password to a guest so if they get logged out it would require me going over to the apartment to log them back in (luckily, no one has asked me to do that.)

Hi Jose, So I'm a little behind on this thread & I've been looking into all this stuff with Netflix & if you offer up your own account could the guest potentially mess with the other accounts on it. Anyway, their is a way you can lock your other profiles so they would only have access to the one you want them to have..

I have a "guest profile" for Netflix/Hulu/Amazon but it is still my account. The account requires a password to be modified in any way, including ordering movies that are not included in the subscription so there's no way guests could change or charge anything.

The only issue I had once was someone signed in on their own account, then messaged me claiming that someone was watching stuff on their account after they checked out. We didn't have any guests during the time they claimed this was happening and we had logged them out anyways, so I think they had left their account logged in elsewhere.

@Kelly1126 I have the Netflix account that allows for streaming on 4 devices at once. I just leave the account signed in. Same with Amazon: I'm actually not sure how many people can log in at once, but there has never been a conflict, maybe because Amazon Prime is pretty poor in Canada and there isn't much to watch. Some people choose to use their own account, but I do provide mine also so they can use it if they want.

We have Smart TVs and/or Roku's so that guests can access their own accounts. We remind them to sign out when they leave. We've also been using YouTubeTV instead of cable TV in some properties. So far, so good. The savings are great. Good luck with whatever you decide!

However, since Netflix has confirmed that it will begin charging accounts that share passwords early next year, now might be a good time to make a change.

If that person has their profile on your account, you can transfer it to their new account and delete it from yours. However, if they don't have a profile or simply use your login information to keep watching Netflix without paying, you can kick them off using a new feature in your account settings.

This week, Netflix announced it had launched a new feature in Account Settings called Managing Access and Devices. The purpose of this tool, the company says, is to log yourself out of devices you may have used while traveling, staying in hotels or visiting family and friends. However, it can also be used to boot an unauthorized user from your Netflix account.

To access this feature, sign in to Netflix in a browser on a computer, phone or tablet and select your profile. Then, hover over the downward-facing arrow icon in the upper-right corner and choose Account. Finally, go to the Security & Privacy section on your Account page and choose Manage access and devices. It may have a blue New box on the left side of the text.

You can see all active logins on your Netflix account on this page. Each will display the user, device, date and time and a relative location. Choose Sign Out on any login you want to kick off, and Netflix will remove its access.

Signing out of a session will stop that device from accessing your Netflix account. However, if the person using it knows your login information, they can sign right back in. In this case, you'll still need to change your password.

To reset your password by email or text, go to netflix.com/loginhelp in a browser window. Choose the option you want to use and follow the steps to reset your password. You may need to log back in on the device you used to change the password.

I share a Netflix account with my parents and my sister (they get my Hulu login, though, so I think we're square). For the past couple of months, I'd noticed movies showing up under Recently Watched that I know none of us would touch with a ten foot pole. Stupidly, I dismissed this as a hiccup on Netflix's part, until I found out the awful truth: we'd been hacked.

It's shameful that someone who writes about tech for a living would just let such suspicious activity slide without further investigation, but it wasn't until I saw this Tech Insider headline that I wondered if the weirdness was more sinister than just a glitch. Motherboard's hacking and information security reporter Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai pointed me in the direction of the website haveibeenpwned.com, where I entered my parents' email address. Lo and behold, we'd been pwned to the max, our login info dumped in a plaintext document titled "BunchaNetflixAccounts," along with the info from some 2400 other users. The document was posted on Pastebin, a site that temporarily stores chunks of plaintext and is primarily used by people sharing code.

The site notes that pastebins are usually only up for a few days, but I knew this had been going on for way longer than just this month. So I went to Netflix's site and checked the viewing activity for my profile, and sure enough there was stuff on there going back months. Curse of Chucky. The Passion of the Christ. One login thief seems to be really into drug trafficking, watching both the new Netflix original series Narcos and El Seor de los Cielos, a telenovela about a drug lord.

The breadth of the stuff watched strongly indicates a number of different people using our account. It's hard to believe the same person would be interested in watching Money for Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve, Anchorman 2, and half a season of The L Word all in the same week. (If such a person indeed exists, I'd like to have a drink with them.)

Once someone gets inside your Netflix account, there's not a ton they can do aside from binge watch some Family Guy, because your credit card info is obscured by the site. The real danger lies in if you use your Netflix password for a bunch of other stuff too. In that case, anyone enterprising enough could do some real damage.

So if you think you've been hacked, here's what to do. Go to haveibeenpwned.com and find out if your data is out there. Change your Netflix password, and if any other accounts share that password you should change those, too. Franceschi-Bicchierai recommends using a password manager like LastPass or 1Password.

I don't think my family's Netflix hack has created any other issues, but we'll be taking better precautions from now on. Though I hate to begrudge people access to Curse of Chucky, they'll have to find some other way to watch it.
