Somalia: Agriculture, Climate Change and Food Security Talks
kicked-off in Mogadishu

The Somali media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture
(SOMESHA) overjoyed the successful opening of the first national
Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change at Somalia
South-Central None State Actors (SOSCENSA) conference hall on Saturday
march 23, 2013 and previously scheduled to be from 23 to 24 March 2013
in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Organized by SOMESHA in collaboration with Somalia Young Doctors
Association (SOYDA), Benadir Livestock Professional Association
(BENALPA) and Somalia Social Workers Association (SOSWA) and hosted by
Somalia South-Central None State Actors (SOSCENSA).

SOSCENSA projects manager Mr. Abdullahi Mohamed Shegow and SOMESHA
Secretary General Mr. Daud Abdi Daud were officially opened the
conference at around 9:00AM on Saturday march 23, 2013 at SOSCENSA
conference hall in Mogadishu. More than ten (10) civil society
organizations from various regions in Somalia were attended the
meeting.
“First of all, I’ have the right to say thank you so much for your
vast participation. Since then, on behalf of SOSCENSA let us all
celebrate the World Water Day marked on yesterday march 22, as
typically recognized to celebrate each year at Global level “said Mr.
Abdullahi Mohamed Shegow, SOSCENSA projects manager

“Each year on March 22, the member states of the United Nations
observe World Water Day to focus attention on the importance of
freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of Earth's
precious freshwater resources. In December 2010, the United Nations
General Assembly declared 2013 as the United Nations International
Year of Water Cooperation. The objective of the year is to raise
awareness of the potential for, and value of increased cooperation in
relation to water”. Mr. Shegow added

Discussions are still continuing, and participants agreed the
existence of unresolved challenges nationwide since the collapse of
military government in 1991. The problems such as cash-crop failures,
poor market, poor infrastructures and lack of adequate knowledge among
farmers and traders were among the spots shared.

Somalia continues to suffer from food insecurity and Climate change
dilemma’s and is not included in the World Bank’s Doing Business
Indicators; widespread corruptions endemic and criminal enterprise
activity flows unimpeded in urban and rural areas. The lack of
effective governance and institutional strength will constrain
Somalia’s ability to develop and implement a coherent economic
development plan that includes sustainable agriculture.

Somalia is a nation has potential well enrich rivers as poverty is a
vicious circle from which it’s extremely difficult to emerge. Poor
households have no savings or assets to use as investments in new
ventures, they have no access to credit and failure may cause further
indebtness or starvation.

Participants will discuss tomorrow water management system, the public
health impacts from the prolonged climate change in the country
including water born diseases, effects of climate change and crop
production. As they were discussed on Saturday they will also continue
how they can advertise and advocate using “Biogas” system to enhance
trees safety.

Roadmap for Action will develop as a ‘living document’ to mobilize
action for achieving climate-smart agriculture as a means to enhance
sustainable productivity and incomes, resilience to climate change and
carbon sequestration.
