You can also use the format command, with different parameters, from the Recovery Console. For more information about the Recovery Console, see Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE).

The format command creates a new root directory and file system for the disk. It can also check for bad areas on the disk, and it can delete all data on the disk. To be able to use a new disk, you must first use this command to format the disk.

I'm currently using a Windows 10 desktop PC, and I ran out of storage on my C drive. To upgrade my storage, I installed an old hard drive of mine in the desktop, which I would like to use as a D drive. When I browse its files, I can see that there's an existing installation of Windows on the drive. I don't care about any of the files on it; I just want to wipe the drive clean and start over. That said, when I try to format the drive I get an error saying that the drive is in use. According to Task Manager, I don't currently have anything accessing the drive. What's the easiest way to wipe the disk and start over?

The drive might be in use by Windows Defender or Windows Search Indexer. To see what is locking the drive try a utility such as LockHunter, which may be able to unlock the drive so that you can use Windows diskmgmt.msc or a third-party tool such as DiskGenius to format it.

Another option is to boot from USB drive, without mounting the HDD, and use tools on the boot drive, such as Ubuntu's Disk Utility, which comes with Ubuntu Live, or a tool such as Ultimate Boot CD, which includes a number of disk management tools.

In addition to File Explorer and Disk Management that has been mentioned above, DiskPart is another option you could try.Launch Command Prompt, enter diskpart > list disk > sel disk x (the number of the old disk you want to format) > clean. If you want to make the delete data unrecoverable, use "clean all" command instead (Check clean a hard drive in Windows 10 for more details).

We are planning to collect WIndows security events with Splunk. As far as I know, there are two formats: standard and XML with renderXML=1 option.
I've have found some (older) blog/answers questions which says searching with the xml format can be very slow...
So which one should we choose, which format is recommended currently? Pros and cons? Can somebody help me to decide?

@ikulcsar Personally I favor the normal format over XML - Its easier to read if you are digging through the events.
There are however, some advantages with the XML logs - most notably if you ingest lots of them they are smaller. (Think of your poor licence)
The 'normal' includes lots of boiler plate text which is just noise - we strip this pointless text out thereby shrinking the event size which gives us the best of both worlds.
As some others have noted, sometimes the field extractions can be a bit 'iffy' with XML, but in fairness I have a few servers which randomly start sending double space lines, and that breaks the normal format field extractions too.

I also ran some bench marking on our system and we found that searching 'normal' events was markedly faster than the XML version of the same data - I think I have read posts where people found the opposite.

I have a problem and thought this would be the best post to explain. I currently have a UF installed on a host sending windows security logs to index=wineventlogs in non-XML format (which is what I want). The issue is that the same host is sending the window security logs in xml to index=main, and I cannot find the reason why. I have installed the Splunk App for Win Infra (1.5.0), Win_TA (5.0.1) and Splunk Add on for AD/DNS (1.0.0/1.0.1) on my SH, IDX and UF (where needed).

Maybe there left some old confs somewhere in the other apps. Be careful, the new Windows add-on didn't create and configure indexes for inputs. This could cause been used the default index. Check the docs, please.

@ikulcsar, If within Event Viewer you compare the default mode and XML mode, you will notice that XML has all the details while default mode shows you basic information about the event. If your use case does not require you to pull all the details, you can get the default data rather than getting XML which would obviously be faster because lesser details are being indexed per event. However, if your intent of pulling XML Event Viewer Log is to use some of the additional details then you do not have a choice but to turn on renderXML.

Both from 2016.. this is why I asked this question and try to get up-to-date information about this topic in general. And I prefer the answers be with explanations if possible, not just a yes/no. I have to build the system, so I should understand it how it works.

This wikiHow teaches you how to format any hard drive connected to your Windows 10 PC. If you just want to format one drive connected to the PC, you can do so using the Disk Management tool. If you want to completely erase all data, reformat the hard drive, and reinstall Windows, you can use the Reset this PC feature in your settings. Be sure to back up your personal files and serial numbers before formatting your PC.

Hi there,
me and my friend are working on the same project and we use the mix format command to format our code. The problem is that he is working on Linux and im working on Windows and so the formatting differs. Windows uses another LineEnding than Linux.
Our pipeline uses Linux so when it checks for the formatting it only fails when I commit with my windows formatted code.
We both use VSCode.

But the problem persists. Now the mix format --check-formatted command fails because of empty lines added by my mix format command. It is only complaining about empty lines in multiline comments using the """ notation.

I've hit a bit of a snag and could really use some help. I've got a bunch of photos in HEIC format, and I'm struggling to view heic files on Windows 10 (and potentially Windows 11) setup. It seems like my current setup just isn't cutting it for these types of files. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a best HEIC viewer that's compatible with Windows 10 or 11? I'm looking for something straightforward and user-friendly since I'm not exactly a tech wizard. Any advice or suggestions would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!

After a bit of research and trying out a few different applications, I found a couple of solutions that worked well for me. First, I discovered that Microsoft actually offers a HEIC file extension support in the Microsoft Store, which, once installed, it seems doesn't allow me to view HEIC files directly in the Windows Photos app, I don't why.

I also tried out a third-party app called TunesBro HEIC converter. It not only let me view HEIC files seamlessly but also offered the option to convert them to JPG if needed. This was super handy for sharing photos with friends who couldn't view HEIC files or for uploading to websites that only accept JPG.

Google Photos is a popular photo sharing and storage service developed by Google. It allows users to upload, share, and manage their photos and videos from any device. It supports a wide range of photo and video formats, including the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIC). HEIC is a format used by Apple's iOS devices for storing high-quality images in smaller file sizes compared to traditional formats like JPEG. However, HEIC is not as widely supported on non-Apple platforms, which can create challenges when sharing or viewing these files.

Once uploaded, Google Photos automatically converts HEIC files to a compatible format for easy viewing across all devices. Simply click or tap on an image to view it. You can also use Google Photos' editing tools to enhance your images.

Encouraged by that success, I also decided to give TunesBro HEIC Converter a shot, especially since I often need to convert photos for sharing with friends and family or for use on websites. The ability to easily convert HEIC files to JPG has been a game changer for me. It's incredibly user-friendly and the batch conversion feature has saved me so much time.

@DemoCr785 I have installed the hevc and heic additions as Microsoft suggests. However, the photos created by modern cameras and phones support wider dynamic range than 8 bits, and these image are not supported yet bu this plugin it seems.

In Windows I have set short dateformat to be dd-MM-yyyy, but Calc only accepts dd/MM/yyyy as input format when I enter dates. Obviously it is quite annoying that Calc is the only software package in my computer, which ignores my windows settings. Can it be fixed?
