I wanted to separate the discussion regarding the dreaded +2 blinking
third stage from the "Compare Goodman and boosted Heat Pump" thread,
as it has forked that discussion away from its original intent.
Anyway, we were discussing the heating mode operation; specifically
pages 17 & 18 of the latest manual (3.31.09).
So, there are 6 modes, 7 bins (or temperature ranges), and a chart
called "Heat Modes and Y2OUT STATE vs. Bins and Y1/Y2" that determines
the mode based on the outdoor temp and how much heat the thermostat is
requesting (Y1 or Y2 - Y2 being a higher demand for heat).
From Gene's summary:
*************************************
Electric heat will be on:
1. For large call (Y2) for heat between 25 and 34 deg
2. For large call (Y2) for heat below 15 deg
3. During defrost mode
4. For temps below -30.
And booster compressor will run:
1. For any call for heat between 15 deg and -30 deg
2. For large call (Y2) for heat between 15 and 25 deg
Booster compressor will NOT run above 25 deg
*************************************
And Y2O is Y2 Out which is the signal to ramp up the speed of the
indoor unit fan.
The blinking +2 happens if there's a large call (Y2) and the outdoor
temp is between 25 & 31 (34 on the older installation manual).
This is not good, and happens if your sensors are off, your Acadia was
not sized correctly for your house, or you have a gaping hole in your
house.
So the questions: does the blinking +2 happen during any other
combination? How can I check if I even have resistance heat? I was
told I don't, and didn't need it. Yet I still remember seeing +2
blinking ALL THE TIME. It was winter, I had a brand new baby in the
house that never slept, so it was all kind of a blur. But I swear
every time I walked down the hallway that +2 was blinking.
And I don't have a gaping hole in my house.
