I have one of the early Hallowell ACHP units (before Acadia) - I think its number 5.  Mostly its worked great - seemed well suited for the marine climate of Portland, Oregon

The circuit board was replaced a few years ago and the unit has worked fine until recently.  During a spate of cold weather and lots of fog, the defrost cycle stopped working.  I have been able to defrost the unit using warm water but don't see this as a long term solution.  It seems like its likely a sensor failure rather than the circuit board, given that the unit works fine other than not going into the defrost cycle.  So, does this seem right from experience others have had?  If so, are the sensors generally available?  And are re there circuit board replacements out there?

Thanks for any insight,
Steve

All of the support for old and new systems has long since moved to
Savemyacadia.org
Consider joining to help the community of Acadia users continue to survive
Parts are available and advice and help can be given for members who post questions
Your asseent about sensors and/or the connections associated with them is probably correct but as a member I can give you a few debugging tips

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply - turns out I joined a while back.  Anyway, I made the $50 donation to become a full member.  It has not yet appeared on my credit card nor have I been given full access to the site.  I assume the payment went through and it will take a while to process it and give me the appropriate permissions.

Anyway, it looks like I need to be a full member to post to the savemyacadia.org forum(s).  Is that correct?  From what I could tell, I currently have read-only permissions.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, Deutsch family here in western Washington state. Do check your email under topic of "Hallowell". Let us know that you got the little info we shared.

Exactly

But you can at least read the discussions (quite a few on defrost)

first thing to determine is if system "ca t" go into defrost.  THe best way to determine this is to reset the system totally (AC power off depowering control board) and then place the defrost jumper on the board.  Then power back up and determine if the system goes through a defrost cycle. (primary two must be the mode for defrost to occur - but at the temps you are experiencing the system should start right up in primary two. (below 40 degrees this is first level of operation..with defrost jumper system defrosts aftr a fixed time but is not responsive to ice build up blocking air so it is not as sensitive to trouble.

If system does show defrost in manual  - then we would suspect the coil sensor probe as being faulty (you need to measure its resistance and temp carefully to determine if sensor is faulty) or the connections from sensor to board are faulty

Thanks David,
I now have full privilege on the savemyacadia website.  I posted what happened when I tried going into manual defrost.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve, please contact Joe or Chris Deutsch in Chehalis, WA. Had sent you info email about a week ago, but it probably got sent to spam or blocked folder. Titled as Hallowell. Went thru similar issues last February and May be able to offer you some insight as you appear to have an Acadia of a vintage similar to our unit.
