Sorry...I accidentally hit the send button prematurely....

COVID-19 put a damper on activities last year.  Are we planning anything this year?  I think that it would be a pity to let the society wither from inactivity.

I have been in touch with Jillian who has suggested that she could hold a workshop at MSVU.  Also Nicole says that she would be happy to continue handling the account and mailing list.

My own bees are doing well and I will probably try to raise a few queens this year, set up mating nucs and move them into 5 frame nucs.  Some of that work could be foci of another workshop.  Of course, final plans must await my being able to go into my hives in a few weeks.

What do people think?  Any interest in planning a limited number of activities as we come out of the pandemic?

Also, what is happening with the society hive that was at Barb’s house in Dartmouth.  Has it been moved yet to another location?

Hi Everyone,
I have a very strong hive that got through the winter (yay) that I'll need to transfer to someone. Jason is going to inspect it on May 14th. As a group, can we make a plan to transfer asap after that? I am no longer in this property as of May 31.

I also have the EMPTY "Dartmouth" hive. It died 2 summers ago. I can be moved any time if you know where it is going.

I'll have Jason inspect everything I have. I will be interested in selling the rest of my equipment if there is anyone interested. I have additional boxes and frames (mostly drawn) for 2 hives (I think 4 bottom and at least 2 top boxes, covers, bases, etc.). I *might* keep one hive if Jason says I can transport it out of province.

I am so happy that the ladies are flourishing--very very active so far but hasn't been opened fully other than to feed.

Barbara:

Where is the active hive located?

I'll happily take the active hive and add it to my Apiary and pay you for them of course.

Once they're inspected, I can move them out at your convenience.

Barbara,

Thanks for the update and glad to hear that your hive is thriving.

Thanks, also for all your past support.  We will be sorry to see you leave the province.

Hopefully, we can have a discussion via email about the fate of your hive while we also discuss any upcoming Society activities.

I want to repeat that I think that the best and fairest action would be for the Society to adopt the hive.  (Do we even have any other living Society hives?)

If there is a rush for placement I could temporarily host it at my house, but I am trying to be a good neighbour and limit hives on my property, so this would only be a temporary solution.

Thank you Roger. The only timeline for me is I would have to negotiate access to the property with a new owner after May 31, so it is very much the best option to have it moved before then, if Jason approves. Not sure what happens if he doesn't but we'll cross that bridge later if necessary.

Hi all,

I've had 2 hives make it through the winter nice and strong, one in Dartmouth and one in Halifax. I would be happy to host a workshop for a split in late May if that is of interest.

Barbara: You have lots of offers on the table for the society's hive, but if needed, it can be moved to my location in Woodside in Dartmouth.

Happy to see the society keep interest and stay active, I've felt very fortunate to have you guys for support when first starting out!

Warmly,

Tara

Hi Barbara,
Is this a Society Hive?
Has someone offered to take it and keep it as a Society hive?
If not, I can see if the place I used in the park is ok. It is a premium site and the bees are very happy there. It could remain a society hive, if so.
Thanks
Lorraine

The living hive is my hive. I have the Dartmouth hive boxes, but it has not had bees for 2 summers. I'm happy to donate my hive to the society if approved and someone can move it.
I have equipment for sale.

Hello Members,
I had a society hive two years ago, from Roger but it did not make it through the winter. We had a rat infiltrate and destroy it! It wasn’t just that one, I had another hive here and the same happened. For that reason, I won’t keep them on my own property anymore.
I would be happy to manage another society hive and I have a much better location. It is in the Dingle Park, at a friend’s and I am sure I could host a workshop there. I know the people who have the property.
It is a great spot.
I could purchase a hive for the society from Roger Morash. He has two available and the cost is $200.00.
If Marcel wants to buy Barbara’s hive that is fine. Or the Society can pay Barbara for it.  Whatever works best for everyone.
Either way I have a lovely spot and would be happy to host a workshop. Possibly one installing a nuc, as that is what I would buy from Roger.
Regardless of our decision, I can host a nuc installing workshop🙂
Either way, works for me.
Barbara, you will have no trouble selling hive parts! Put them on Kijiji or on the Nova Scotia beekeeping website. You could sell your hive for a good price too.
Thanks everyone🌻🐝
Lorraine

Thanks Lorraine. Am I right that I can't sell uninspected hive parts?

Assuming the inspection goes well (and it sounds like it will!), I think that buying Barb's hive for the society sounds like a great idea. Let us know the price!

Cheers,
Nicole

Hi all,

I hope you're all well!  Glad to hear people's bees came through well.  On another note, I'd be happy to participate/ collaborate on some society workshops this year.  I've decided to downsize my own apiary so that I have more time to help other people.  Should be a win-win, because I'll learn more by doing so.

Let me know when you're planning workshops, etc.

Michelle
