HAJJ, UMRAH & ZIYARAH
FROM the Book: HAJJ, UMRAH & ZIYARAH
By His Eminence Sheikh Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baz
“Expedite the performance of Hajj. For nobody knows what may obstruct him. (Ahamad)
Hajj is a duty that mankind owes to Allah.
3:96-The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings:
3:97- In it are signs manifest; (for example) the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith Allah stands not in need of any of his creatures.
Sahih Muslim
Hadith
Hadith 2863 Narrated by
Abdullah ibn Abbas
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: This is the Umrah of which we have taken advantage. So he who has not the sacrificial animal with him should get out of the state of Ihram completely, for Umrah has been incorporated in Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith
Hadith 2524 Narrated by
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud ; Umar ibn al-Khattab
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Make the hajj and the umrah follow each other closely, for they remove poverty and sins as a blacksmith's bellows remove impurities from iron, gold and silver; and hajj which is accepted gets no less a reward than Paradise."
One should arrange for his expenses of HAJJ and UMRAH out of his lawful earnings (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence). A pilgrim should avoid the earnings of others and not seek others monetary help. He should strive to secure the Divine Pleasure, success and bliss in the Next Life through his Hajj and Umrah performed once in life. He should try his utmost , not to have any wordly interest in Hajj. He should not have motives of hypocrisy, seeking fame, and pride, and save his tongue from lies, backbiting and mocking at one’s friends and fellow Muslims. Try to have company of pious and righteous persons with firm knowledge and faith and avoid the company of the ignorant and sinners. Grasp all the important points prescribed for Hajj and Umrah, and ask the learned whenever confused.
When he boards a vehicle, he should recite: Allah is great thrice; and say: Subhanalladi Sakkaralana hada wama kunna laha muqrunieen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon…. Allahumma inni asaluka fi safari hada albirra wattaqwa wa minal amali matarda, Allahumma hawwin alaina sadarana hadha watwi anna bu’dahu , Allahumma anthas sahibu fis safari, wak kaleefatu, filahli, Allahumma inni a’udhubika min wa’thaa’is safari waka’aabatil manzari wa suil munqalabi filmali walahli.
“Glory is to Him Who has subjugated this to us and we were not capable of doing it. . And certainly we would return to our Lord . O Allah! I ask You in this journey of mine, piety and goodness and such deeds that please You. O Allah! Make this journey of ours easy for us, and reduce its distance for us. O Allah! You are my Companion in journey and the Successor for my family behind . O Allah! I seek refuge with You against the hardship of travel, bad sight, and any harm that may occur to my family and my belongings.”
If one does Hajj more than once it is a NAFL Hajj To perform Umrah after Umrah serves as the expiation for the lapses committed between them and the reward for Hajj Mabrur (accepted) is nothing but Paradise. There is no basis in Sharia for this practice of some people who perform frequently Umrah after having completed Hajj by moving out to Tan’im or Ji’ranah if they have already performed Umrah before Hajj. Such practice is unapproved and baseless and not desirable. This also puts everyone to inconvenience and results in; over-crowding and traffic accidents.
HAJJ OF CHILDREN - A child ( not having full understanding) performing Hajj is permitted, but he should perform it again after attaining adulthood. Things that are forbidden for an adult during Ihram will be also forbidden for such a child.
When he sets out for Hajj or Umrah, he should preach his family members and friends, to fear Allah.Exhort them to abide by the Divine Commands and to shun all that is forbidden. Repent sincerely his sins. If he owes something to others in terms of possessions, honour or life, he should restore them before his journey, or get himself forgiven.
When a pilgrim arrives in Makkah, on reaching Miqat it is desirable for him to take a bath and apply perfume having trimmed his moustache (it is not allowed to shave the Beard) and nails and shave hair under the arm-pit and pubic region.(Normally they should not be left unattended for more than 40 days.) Then put on ihram – two cloth sheets, unsewed , the izaar to be wrapped about the waist and the Ridaa on the upper part of the body. Slippers or sandals could be worn. One could put on Ihram before boarding the plane, but he should recite Labbaik only on reaching the Miqat or near.
Having made intention for Ihram it is no longer permissible for a male or female to shave or cut hair or nails or apply perfume. A male cannot wear any sewed garments such as shirts, trousers, socks etc. , and clothes stained with saffron. He could use an kumbrella. A woman may enter in the IHRAM in any dress, in any colour, head covered but face and below wrist left open. She should ensure that her dress does not resemble that of males.
Menstruating and postnatal women should put on IHRAM after taking bath on reaching Miqat and perform all the rituals of Hajj except TAWAF of Ka’bah. A female should not put on any veil on her face or wear gloves. Sewn Shirts, trousers, and socks are permitted for women. She may cover her face with her head scarf, & her hand with some cloth if she coexists with alien men. Ihram cloth could be washed and replaced with another set of Ihram.
They should avoid idle talk, (However, a debate for upholding truth and for checking falsehood in a befitting manner is allowed ) sinful acts and wrangling, obscenity, Rafath (sexual intercourse,),etc.
They are forbidden to hunt, or assist in hunting, fell trees or to pluck the greenery, marry or to have sexual intercourse or propose to a woman or to touch any woman with passion. They cannot pick up findings lying on the ground in the sacred precincts unless one intends to declare it.
.
Decide what you want to perform whether HAJJ or UMRAH.
If for Hajj express verbally your intention & say: Allahumma Labbaik Hajj .
For Umrah express intention & say: Allahumma Labbaik Umrah.
This intention should be expressed after one boards his transport. The expression of verbal intention is approved only for IHRAM and NOT for any other Prayers, any other worship act or Tawaf .Then in the manner of the Prophet they should Recite Labbaik “
LABBAIK ALLAHUMMA LABBAIK,
LABBAIKA LAA SHAREEKALAKA LABBAIK
INNAL -HAMDA WAN-NI’MATA LAKA WAL MULK
LA SHAREEKA LAKA”
“I DO RESPOND O ALLAH, I DO RESPOND. I DO RESPOND, YOU HAVE NO PARTNER, ALL PRAISE, GRACE AND DOMINION ARE YOURS, AND YOU HAVE NO PARTNER.”
While reciting it and remembering Allah much, one should reach the House of Allah, stop reciting Talbiyah & step in first by the right foot and recite: “With the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon Allah’s Messenger, I seek refuge with Allah the Almighty, by His Noble Face and His eldest rule and authority, against the accursed Satan. O Allah! Open the gates of Your Mercy for me.”
FOR UMRAH: Then face the Hajr-al-Aswad (Black Stone) touch with hand or stick, kiss or gesture towards this and say: ALLAHU AKBAR – Allah is all great; & perform TAWAF of Ka’bah – 7 times starting from his left side saying: O Allah! I do so with faith in You, believing in Your Book, honouring the promise to You, and following the Sunnah of Your Messenger Muhammad (Sal).( No specific supplication for Tawaf& Sa’y.) First 3 rounds in brisk pace,(Ramal) and the rest in normal pace.(right shoulder uncovered – Idtiba)Thereafter cover the right shoulder and offer 2 rak’at of prayer behind Maqam-Ibrahim & traverse between AS-Safa & Al-Marwah – 7 times,(no specific supplications for this) If possible, it is better to ascent on top of Mount As-Safa as it is desirable to face the Qiblah & then recite: “There is no true God but Allah and Allah is All- Great . There is no true God but Allah. He is One, having no partner. And to Him belongs the kingdom and all praises. He causes life and death. He has authority over everything. There is no true God but Allah. He fulfilled His promise, helped His slave and He alone defeated the Ahzab (all the disbeliever communities” with raised hand thrice. While descending move towards Mount Al-Marwah men walking briskly between the green lights. Women should not do so. Mount Al-Marwah and recite the same supplication. Up and down – make two sa’y. Then shorten the hair(NOT DIRECTED TO SHAVE THE HEAD COMPLETELY at this stage)
Now UMRAH is completed. Restrictions are removed except the relations with the wives which will be lifted after the completion of Hajj. To perform many Umrah after Hajj is not persuaded by Shari’ah. If a child performs Hajj, he should perform it again after he attains adulthood. And if a slave performs Hajj, he should perform it again after being free.
On 8th Dhul-Hijjah- to perform Hajj, put on IHRAM again after taking a bath and applying perfume. Go to MINA before midnoon. Till stoning Jamratal- Aqabah, frequently recite the Talbiyah. Offer Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr at Mina. Each prayer should be performed at the appointed time in Qasr (in shortened form) Not combined together. No Qasr for Maghrib and Fajr prayers. After sunrise go to ARAFAT. Stay at Namirah till midnoon. After the sermon, pilgrims pray Zuhr and Asr together with a single Adhan and two Iqamas.
STANDING AT ARAFAT. Excepting Batne-Urnah, the whole place is fit for standing. If possible face Qibla and Jabal Ar-Rahmah and remember Him, invoke Him & supplicate wholeheartedly with raised hands reciting Talbiyah and from the Quran or Tasbih, Tahmid, Takbir, Tahlil, Taqdis, Houqalah or Lailaha illallahu wahudahu lashareekalahu, lahul mulku, walahulhamdu, yuhiyee wayumeethu wa huwa alakulli shai’in Qadeer. Etc.
In Arafat, Muslims should turn fully to Allah, seek His help, full of submission and bow to Him displaying utmost modesty and expect His Mercy and forgiveness, recall sins and repent sincerely. Till sunset, the pilgrim should remain engaged in Allah’s remembrance and supplication while crying wholeheartedly.
After sunset people should return calmly to Al-Muzdalifah reciting Talbiyah. It is not permissible to return from Arafat before sunset. Offer Maghrib and Isha combined with a single Adhan and two Iqamah at Al-Muzdalifah spending the night there, and after Fajr prayers, stand facing Qiblah in front of Al-Mash’ara Al-Haram and rememb;er Allah, offer supplications, glorify Allah as much as possible till it gets bright in the morning and then move towards Mina before the sunrise invoking Allah on the way hurrying while traversing the valley of Muhassar a place of torment in the past.
After reaching Mina, stop reciting Talbiyah and on approaching Jamrat, cast 7 pebbles on it one after another while raising the hands and saying “Allahu Akbar”. Pebbles could be picked up anywhere even at Mina. On the remaining 3 days, pebbles should be picked up from Mina everyday Thereafter one should slaughter the sacrificial animal saying “Bismillahi Wallahu Akbar Allahummna hadha minka walaka.( In the name of Allah. Allah is All Great. O Allah! It is from You and for You.) The animal should be laid facing the Qiblah.
.It is desirable to distribute the meat of one’s animal among the poor having eaten some as Allah has directed.
After this ritual, one should shave his head completely. It is not enough to get only part of hair cut rather the hair of the whole head should be cut. Thereafter, Ihram restrictions are removed except enjoying women.
Then the pilgrim can apply perfume and perform Tawaf in Makkah known as Tawaf Ifadah and Tawaf Ziyarah. Without this one’s Hajj is not accomplished.
After Tawaf and offering two Rak’ah of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim, perform Sa’y (Those doing Hajj Al-Tamattu)
First cast the pebbles(Ramy), then sacrifice(Nahr), then shave the head(Halaq), then perform Tawaf and Sa’y in Makkah on the Day of Sacrifice. This sequence was made easy for the nation. Now all the restrictions are removed.
It is desirable for the pilgrim to drink Zam Zam water to one’s full capacity making many supplications as possible.
RETURN TO MINA AND 3 DAYS & 3 NIGHTS STAY THERE. Each day they should cast pebbles at the Jamrat after midday or at nights in this order:
Day 1 - Start with 1st Jamrah (near Khaif Mosque) hurl 7 pebbles one after another and make supplications.
Then the 2nd Jamrah should be stoned and then the 3rd Jamrah and one should not stay there thereafter.
Day 2 & Day 3 are similarly stoned.,One could cast pebbles on behalf of children, the sick, the old and the pregnant women. An agent could also be appointed on some one’s behalf due to the crowd and the time for casting pebbles might elapse.
PRESCRIBED HADY: A Goat, a lamb, or one seventh share of a camel or cow from one’s wholesome and lawful earnings. One who does not have the hady, and cannot afford this, should fast 3 days during hajj (before the Day of Sacrifice or after it consecutively or at intervals.Better to observe these three days fast before the day of Arafat.) and 7 days on returning home at intervals.
Offer all congregational prayers at the mosques at the appointed times and perform Tawaf as much as possible.
FAREWELL TAWAF: When pilgrims intend to leave Makkah they must perform farewell Tawaf so that they spend their last moments in Ka’bah except the menstruating and puerperal women. When one bids farewell to Ka’bah and ;is about to leave the Sacred Mosque, he sh;ould exit straight away. One must not move backwards, for such a practice is not ascribed by the Prophet nor by his Companions.
May Allah help us follow our faith steadfastly and save us against opposing Him. Verily, He is All Generous and the All Exalted.
VISITING PROPHET’S MOSQUE: It is part of Sunnah to visit Prophet’s Mosque before or after Hajj. (The intention should not be to visit his grave. “Do not make my grave a place of festival”)
“Praying once in this mosque of mine is one thousand times better than prayer in other mosques except the Sacred Mosque.” (Bukhari & Muslim.)
Enter with right foot first and recite: Bismillahi wassalatu wassalamu ala Rasoolillahi a’udhu billahil Azeemi wa biwajhil Kareemi wa Sultaanihil qadeemi, minash-shaitanir rajeemi,Allahummaftah li abwaaba rahmatika.
(By the Name of Allah and peace and blessings be upon Allah’s Messenger. I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Great and with His Noble Face and His eldest rule and authority, against the accursed Satan. O Allah! Open for me the gates of Your Mercy.)
Offer two Rak’ah of prayer inside the mosque preferably within Riyadh-ul-Jannah. After prayers one should greet (Salam) the Prophet and his two Companions Abu Bakr and Umar (Sal): “Assalamualaika O Messenger of Allah. May Allah’s Mercy and Blessings be upon you.”
Then salute the two companions Abu Bakr and Umar (Sal). Women should not visit graves.

Likewise, it is an accordance with Sunnah to visit Al-Baqi’ and the graves of martyrs and of Hamzah(Ral) Say: “O dwellers of those places of the believers and Muslims, Assalamu Alaikum. We are, if Allah wills, about to meet you. We seek from Allah peace and security for us and for you.”
Visiting the graves for making a prayer or to sit there or to invoke them in one’s need or seek their help for curing the sick or invoking Allah with reference to them or their status is forbidden as it is a SHIRK
