The Dalai Lama has implored Buddhist monks in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to put an end to a series of recent attacks on Muslims in their countries.

The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader spoke Tuesday night about religious violence when asked questions following a speech he delivered to 15,000 people at the University of Maryland in the United States.

Myanmar, which was earlier known as Burma, has been wracked by sectarian violence that has killed hundreds and displaced more than 135,000 over the past year, while Sri Lankan Buddhist groups have recently attacked Muslim businesses.

“Killing people in the name of religion is really very sad, unthinkable, very sad,” the Nobel Peace laureate said. “Nowadays even Buddhists now involved, in Burma and Sri Lanka also. Buddhist monks … destroy Muslim mosques or Muslim families. Really very sad.”

He said that he sometimes counsels his fellow Buddhists: “When they develop some sort of negative emotions toward the Muslim community, then please think (of) the face of Buddha.”

If the Buddha is there, he will protect the Muslims, he said in a video of the speech posted on the university’s website.

The Dalai Lama is the head of the Tibetan school of Buddhism, while Buddhism in Myanmar and Sri Lanka is dominated by the separate Theravada branch, which does not answer to his authority.

The sectarian violence in Myanmar first flared in western Rakhine state nearly a year ago, when mobs of Buddhists armed with machetes razed thousands of Muslim homes, leaving hundreds dead and forcing 125,000 people to flee, mostly Muslims.

That violence has since spread into a campaign against the country’s Muslim community in other regions.

In March, at least 43 people were killed and 12,000 displaced in the central city of Meikhtila when Buddhist mobs rampaged through the town and police stood idly by. Most of the victims were Muslim.

Last week, one person was killed and nine others injured when Buddhists stormed a township about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the main city Yangon, ransacking mosques and burning several villages to the ground.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has accused authorities — including Buddhist monks, local politicians, government officials, and state security forces — of fomenting an organized campaign of “ethnic cleansing” against the Muslims in Rakhine state. The government has denied the charges.

Sri Lanka, which is dominated by a Buddhist majority, has also been hit by rising instances of hate speech against Muslims and attacks on Muslim-owned businesses.

Groups led by Buddhist monks have spread allegations that the small Muslim minority was dominating business there and trying to take over the country by increasing its birthrate and secretly sterilizing Buddhists.

I read the book. I was drawn to it just knowing that it was written by a Jewish person. Today Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, but meanwhile Islamaphobia is growing as well. Muhammad was a peaceful man, yet many degrade him as a violent person. Reading this book made me understand the Prophet on a whole separate dimension (even though a nonMuslim wrote it!). Lesley Hazleton has been a flash of lightening in a thunderstorm.

Most of the questions you have posed from the quran is related to the hereafter excepting a few related the the worldly life.

We believe in the hereafter and in the case of majority buddhist do not believe in the hereafter but instead believe in  reincarnation ....so discussing the hereafter beliefes will not benefit even if we try to explain to you.....Let us look at one of the questions you posed with regard to worldly life :

Question: The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 2:216

Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. 

The practicle answer to this is ....As per Islamic belief , household setup is the core foundation to lead a happy / stable family life....In practise the percentage of a muslim with vices who drinks /gambles etc is relatively very low when compared to people of any other religioun. Therefore when a muslim woman marries a non-muslim man ....the basic values are different  (east to West) ....it is unacceptable for the muslim wife to drink and for the non-muslim husband it is acceptable ....hence the generation of children from such parents are confused and distorted not knowing what is right /wrong / acceptable which leads to a distorted family.

If you look at quotes in the quran related to worldly matters you would see the compassion shown toward humanity. Please ensure you don not take excerts of a line but instead you have to look it as a context. (189) Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors. 

(190) And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

(191) And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. 

(192) Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors. 

(193) [Fighting in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him. 

(194) And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

Again the idea of this is have a better understanding of each other since there is so must misconstrution.

Disbelievers will have a painful doom.

Those who make war with Allah and his messenger will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. That is how they will be treated in this world, and in the next they will have an awful doom. 
Original: إِنَّمَاجَزَاء الَّذِينَ يُحَارِبُونَ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيَسْعَوْنَ فِي الأَرْضِفَسَاداً أَن يُقَتَّلُواْ أَوْ يُصَلَّبُواْ أَوْ تُقَطَّعَ أَيْدِيهِمْوَأَرْجُلُهُم مِّنْ خِلافٍ أَوْ يُنفَوْاْ مِنَ الأَرْضِ ذَلِكَلَهُمْ خِزْيٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَهُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 5:33

Disbelievers will want to come out of the Fire, but will not. Their will be a lasting doom. 
Original: يُرِيدُونَ أَن يَخْرُجُواْ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا هُم بِخَارِجِينَ مِنْهَاوَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ

Christians will be burned in the Fire. 
Original: لَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذِينَ قَالُواْ إِنَّ اللّهَ هُوَالْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَقَالَ الْمَسِيحُ يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ اعْبُدُواْاللّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ مَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللّهِ فَقَدْ حَرَّمَ اللّهُعَلَيهِالْجَنَّةَ وَمَأْوَاهُ النَّارُ وَمَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 5:72

Muslims that make friends with disbelievers will face a doom prepared for them by Allah. 
Original: تَرَى كَثِيراً مِّنْهُمْيَتَوَلَّوْنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَبِئْسَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لَهُمْ أَنفُسُهُمْأَن سَخِطَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَفِي الْعَذَابِ هُمْ خَالِدُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 5:80

Disbelievers will be owners of hell-fire. 
Original: وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْبِآيَاتِنَا أُوْلَـئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 5:86

Those who disbelieve will be forced to drink boiling water, and will face a painful doom. 
Original: وَذَرِ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُواْدِينَهُمْ لَعِباً وَلَهْواً وَغَرَّتْهُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا وَذَكِّرْ بِهِأَن تُبْسَلَ نَفْسٌ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ اللّهِ وَلِيٌّوَلاَ شَفِيعٌ وَإِن تَعْدِلْ كُلَّ عَدْلٍ لاَّ يُؤْخَذْ مِنْهَا أُوْلَـئِكَالَّذِينَ أُبْسِلُواْ بِمَا كَسَبُواْ لَهُمْ شَرَابٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ وَعَذَابٌأَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْفُرُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 6:70

Disbelievers will be excluded from heaven. Theirs will be a bed of hell. 
Original: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْبِآيَاتِنَا وَاسْتَكْبَرُواْ عَنْهَا لاَ تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءوَلاَ يَدْخُلُونَالْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى يَلِجَ الْجَمَلُ فِي سَمِّ الْخِيَاطِ وَكَذَلِكَ نَجْزِيالْمُجْرِمِينَ
لَهُم مِّن جَهَنَّمَ مِهَادٌ وَمِن فَوْقِهِمْ غَوَاشٍوَكَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي الظَّالِمِينَ 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 7:40�41

Allah turns Jews into apes! 
Original: فَلَمَّا عَتَوْاْ عَن مَّا نُهُواْ عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُواْ قِرَدَةًخَاسِئِينَ

Those that the Muslims killed were not really killed by them. It was Allah who did the killing.

The angels smite the face and backs of disbelievers, saying: "Taste the punishment of burning!" 
Original: وَلَوْ تَرَى إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ الْمَلآئِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَوُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ وَذُوقُواْ عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ

Slay the idolaters wherever you find them.

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 9:5 
Christians and Jews are perverse. Allah himself fights against them. 
Original: وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ابْنُ اللّهِ وَقَالَتْ النَّصَارَىالْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللّهِ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْيُضَاهِؤُونَ قَوْلَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَبْلُ قَاتَلَهُمُاللّهُ أَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 9:30 
Those who oppose Allah and His messenger will burn in the fire of hell. 
Original: أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُواْ أَنَّهُمَن يُحَادِدِ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَأَنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِداً فِيهَاذَلِكَ الْخِزْيُ الْعَظِيمُ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 9:63

Fight the disbelievers and hypocrites. Be harsh with them. They are all going to hell anyway. 
Original: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْوَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 9:73 
Believers must fight for Allah. They must kill and be killed , and are bound to do so by the Torah, Gospel, and Quran. But Allah will reward them for it. 
Original: إِنَّ اللّهَ اشْتَرَى مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمبِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الجَنَّةَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَوَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْداً عَلَيْهِ حَقّاً فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنجِيلِوَالْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ أَوْفَى بِعَهْدِهِ مِنَ اللّهِ فَاسْتَبْشِرُواْبِبَيْعِكُمُ الَّذِي بَايَعْتُم بِهِ وَذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 9:111

Disbelievers will have a boiling drink and a painful doom. 
Original: إِلَيْهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ جَمِيعاً وَعْدَ اللّهِ حَقّاً إِنَّهُيَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْالصَّالِحَاتِبِالْقِسْطِ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَهُمْ شَرَابٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ وَعَذَابٌأَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْفُرُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 10:4

Allah made a roof fall in to kill unbelievers. "And the doom came on them whence they knew not." 
Original: قَدْ مَكَرَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْفَأَتَى اللّهُ بُنْيَانَهُم مِّنَ الْقَوَاعِدِ فَخَرَّ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّقْفُمِن فَوْقِهِمْ وَأَتَاهُمُ الْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَشْعُرُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 16:26

Allah has prepared a Fire for the disbelievers. When they want a shower, Allah will give them a shower of molten lead to burn their faces. 
Original: وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ فَمَن شَاء فَلْيُؤْمِنوَمَنشَاء فَلْيَكْفُرْ إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ نَاراً أَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَاوَإِن يَسْتَغِيثُوا يُغَاثُوا بِمَاء كَالْمُهْلِ يَشْوِي الْوُجُوهَ بِئْسَالشَّرَابُ وَسَاءتْ مُرْتَفَقاً

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 18:29

Disbelievers will not be able to put out the fire on their faces and backs. They will be stupefied and no one will help them. 
Original: لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا حِينَلَا يَكُفُّونَ عَن وُجُوهِهِمُ النَّارَ وَلَا عَن ظُهُورِهِمْ وَلَاهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
بَلْ تَأْتِيهِم بَغْتَةً فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ فَلَايَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 21:39�40

Disbelievers will wear garments of fire, boiling fluid will be poured on their heads, their bellies and skin will be melted, they will be tormented with iron hooks, and when they try to escape they will be driven back with the taunt: Taste the doom of burning. 
Original: هَذَانِ خَصْمَانِ اخْتَصَمُوافِي رَبِّهِمْ فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَابٌ مِّن نَّارٍ يُصَبُّمِن فَوْقِ رُؤُوسِهِمُ الْحَمِيمُ
يُصْهَرُ بِهِ مَا فِي بُطُونِهِمْوَالْجُلُودُ
وَلَهُم مَّقَامِعُ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ
كُلَّمَا أَرَادُواأَن يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهَا مِنْ غَمٍّ أُعِيدُوا فِيهَا وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 22:19�22

Those who believe in another god are doomed. 
Original: فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهاً آخَرَفَتَكُونَمِنَ الْمُعَذَّبِينَ 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 26:213

Allah cast panic into the hearts of the disbelievers. He killed some, and enslaved others. 
Original: وَرَدَّاللَّهُ الَّذِينَكَفَرُوا بِغَيْظِهِمْ لَمْ يَنَالُوا خَيْراً وَكَفَى اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَالْقِتَالَوَكَانَ اللَّهُ قَوِيّاً عَزِيزاً
وَأَنزَلَ الَّذِينَ ظَاهَرُوهُم مِّنْأَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مِن صَيَاصِيهِمْ وَقَذَفَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الرُّعْبَفَرِيقاً تَقْتُلُونَ وَتَأْسِرُونَ فَرِيقاً 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 33:25�26

Ignore disbelievers and their poisonous talk. 
Original: وَلَا تُطِعِ الْكَافِرِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَوَدَعْ أَذَاهُمْ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَكِيلاً 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 33:48

Those who oppose Islam will be slain with a fierce slaughter. 
Original: لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَفِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْمُرْجِفُونَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَبِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَا يُجَاوِرُونَكَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلاً
مَلْعُونِينَأَيْنَمَا ثُقِفُوا أُخِذُوا وَقُتِّلُوا تَقْتِيلاً 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 33:60�61 
Allah has destroyed many generations. 
Original: كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ فَنَادَوْا وَلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصٍ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 38:3

Those who deny the Scripture and Allah's messengers will be dragged through boiling water and thrust into the Fire. 
Original: الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوابِالْكِتَابِ وَبِمَا أَرْسَلْنَا بِهِ رُسُلَنَا فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
إِذِ الْأَغْلَالُ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ وَالسَّلَاسِلُ يُسْحَبُونَ
فِي الْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِي النَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 40:70�72

Non-muslims will be tormented forever in the Fire. Allah will not have any mercy on them. 
Original: فَإِن يَصْبِرُوا فَالنَّارُ مَثْوًى لَّهُمْ وَإِنيَسْتَعْتِبُوا فَمَا هُم مِّنَ الْمُعْتَبِينَ 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 41:24

Allah will taunt the disbelievers that he torments in the fire, saying: "Taste the doom for that ye disbelieved." 
Original: وَيَوْمَ يُعْرَضُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواعَلَى النَّارِأَلَيْسَ هَذَا بِالْحَقِّ قَالُوا بَلَى وَرَبِّنَا قَالَ فَذُوقُوا الْعَذَابَبِمَاكُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 46:34

Smite the necks of the disbelievers whenever you fight against them. Those who die fighting for Allah will be rewarded. 
Original: فَإِذا لَقِيتُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَضَرْبَالرِّقَابِ حَتَّىإِذَا أَثْخَنتُمُوهُمْ فَشُدُّوا الْوَثَاقَ فَإِمَّا مَنّاً بَعْدُ وَإِمَّافِدَاء حَتَّى تَضَعَ الْحَرْبُأَوْزَارَهَا ذَلِكَ وَلَوْ يَشَاءُ اللَّهُ لَانتَصَرَ مِنْهُمْ وَلَكِن لِّيَبْلُوَبَعْضَكُمبِبَعْضٍ وَالَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَن يُضِلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 47:4

On the Last Day good Muslims will not love their non-Muslim friends and family members, not even their fathers, sons, or brothers [or their mothers, daughters, or sisters]. 
Original: لَا تَجِدُ قَوْماً يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَمَنْحَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءهُمْأَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ أُوْلَئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُالْإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٍ مِّنْهُ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِيمِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُواعَنْهُ أُوْلَئِكَ حِزْبُ اللَّهِ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 58:22

A hypocritical Jew looks like an ass carrying books. Those who deny the revelations of Allah are ugly. 
Original: مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوْرَاةَ ثُمَّلَمْيَحْمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ الْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَاراً بِئْسَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِالَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 62:5

Those who do not believe in Allah will be chained up and cast into hell-fire where they will eat filth. 
Original: خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَصَلُّوهُ
ثُمَّ فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعاً فَاسْلُكُوهُ
إِنَّهُكَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ الْيَوْمَ هَاهُنَا حَمِيمٌ 

 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 69:30,35

The fires of hell will be fueled with the bodies of idolators and unbelievers. They will experience an ever-greater torment.

وَأَلَّوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُم مَّاء غَدَقاً
لِنَفْتِنَهُمْفِيهِ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَاباً صَعَداً 

The Qur'an (القرآن), Sura 72:15�17

Those who disobey Allah and his messenger will dwell forever in the fire of hell. 
Original: إِلَّا بَلَاغاًمِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرِسَالَاتِهِ وَمَن يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُنَارَ جَهَنَّمَخَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَداً

Allah has prepared chains, manacles, and a raging fire for the disbelievers.

A Muslim suicide bomber rammed his car into a U.S. convoy in Kabul on Thursday, killing at least 15 people including two American soldiers and four civilian contractors, officials said. The brazen attack made May the deadliest month this year for coalition forces. It was the bloodiest attack in the Afghan capital since March 9, when suicide bombers struck near the Afghan Defense Ministry while U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel was visiting. President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying it was the work of “terrorists and enemies of Afghanistan’s peace.”

 

An Islamic militant group, Hizb-e-Islami, claimed responsibility for the early morning bombing, saying its new “martyrdom” unit stalked the convoy for weeks. The announcement could signal escalation by the movement, based in northeastern Afghanistan, which has fought against the American-led coalition but is also a fierce rival of the Taliban. Body parts littered the scene of the blast, and one U.S. vehicle was reduced to a mangled pile of metal. The explosion was powerful enough to rattle buildings on the other side of the city. Nine Afghan civilians died in the blast, including two children, said Health Ministry spokesman Kanishka Beektash Torkystani, and 35 people were wounded.

 

May has become the deadliest month of the year for coalition forces, with a death toll of 18. Up to now international casualties have generally been falling along with the reduction in numbers of international soldiers. NATO plans to pull its combat forces out of Afghanistan next year.  The suicide bomber detonated with a car packed with explosives about 8 a.m., Kabul provincial police spokesman Hashmad Stanakzi said. “The explosion was very big. It set the nearby buildings on fire,” he said. Kabul Deputy Police Chief Daud Amin said it was difficult to count the dead because the blast shredded many of the victims. “We saw two dead bodies of children on the ground,” Amin said. “But the rest of the (shattered) bodies were scattered around.”

A spokesman for Hizb-e-Islami, Haroon Zarghoon, told The Associated Press that one of the movement’s operatives carried out the attack on two vehicles of U.S. advisers. Zarghoon says the militant group has formed a new cell to carry out suicide attacks on U.S. and other coalition troops. “The cell had been monitoring the movement and timing of the American convoy for a week and implemented the plan Thursday morning,” Zarghoon said. He said the cell was established in response to reports that the U.S. plans to keep permanent bases and troops in Afghanistan even after the NATO withdrawal.

 

The U.S. has said it wants no permanent bases in Afghanistan after 2014, but Karzai raised eyebrows last week when he announced he had agreed to an American request to keep nine bases. A small American force is expected to remain in the country to assist Afghans in keeping security, but the exact configuration of their work has not yet been decided.

 

Hizb-e-Islami is headed by 65-year-old Gubuddin Hekmatyar, a former Afghan prime minister and onetime U.S. ally who is now listed as a terrorist by Washington. The militia has thousands of fighters and followers in the country’s north and east. Hekmatyar’s government was heavily financed by the U.S. during Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. He is now is being hunted by Afghan and NATO troops. U.S. bombs have targeted his military chief, Kashmir Khan, in Kunar province in northeastern Afghanistan on the border with Pakistan. Khan was wounded but survived.

 

However, Hekmatyar’s son-in-law has held peace talks with Karzai and American officials. In a further sign of the complexities of the Afghan insurgency, Hizb-e-Islami is also a rival to the Taliban insurgency, even though both movements share the goal of driving out foreign troops and establishing a state that would follow a strict interpretation of Islamic law. Hekmatyar and the Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Omar, are said to be bitter personal enemies.

Thursday’s attack was the second in eight months claimed by Hizb-e-Islami. In September, the militant group claimed responsibility when a female suicide car bomber killed least 12 people. At the time, Hizb-e-Islami said the attack was revenge for the film “Innocence of Muslims,” which was made by an Egyptian-born American citizen and infuriated Muslims for its negative depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

The claim that Islam is a peace-loving religion, is openly contradicted by the Koran that reads like a terrorist manifesto. We must not be fooled by the speeches of Arab leaders who condemn the acts of terrorism when their people are out in the streets in a carnival-like atmosphere celebrating the carnage of innocent people by suicide bombers.

 

Real peace with Muslims is impossible as long as they believe in the example and teaching of Muhammad. For the Prophet peace comes only through submission to Islam, which is the very meaning of "Islam," namely, "submission."  But the Islamic concept of peace as a world dominated by Muslims is ultimately a mandate for war.

 

The challenge that we face today in seeking to establish peaceful relations with Muslims. For this to happen, we need to help Muslims to understand the fundamental flaws of the teachings of the Koran.  A religion that advocates engaging in "holy war" (Jihad) to propagate its faith, is a repressive movement that violates the fundamental human right to choose whom to worship.

 

Muslims who use violence, warfare, and terrorism to advance the cause of Allah, can legitimately claim to be following the example and teachings of their prophet, Muhammad.

 

A religion that resorts to violence to force its teachings upon others, can hardly be called a "religion," because a true religion presupposes respect for fellow-beings.  It would be more appropriate to label violent religions as "terroristic organizations."

 

The designation of "terrorist organization" applies not only to Islam, but also to Christian churches that became violent during certain periods of the history. For example, during the Middle Ages the Catholic Church  became a formidable "terrorist organization" that organized crusades to exterminate Muslims, Jews, and so-called "heretics." The Catholic church terrorized people in Western Europe , especially through the inquisition. The latter was a travelling court that went from town to town seeking

out for "heretics" to interrogate, torture, and execute if they did not abandon their beliefs.

 

We only wish that Muslims religious leaders would follow the example of the Pope by apologizing for the countless number of innocent people they massacred during their millennium of territorial expansion.

 

If they truly believe that Islam is a peace-loving religion, then they have a moral obligation to show their heartfelt sorrow for slaughtering millions of innocent people who refused to submit to the Islam faith and rule.  They also should apologize for the daily terrorist acts committed by Muslim suicide-bombers.  They should condemn these acts of violence as a betrayal of Islam. But this is wishful thinking, because there are no indications that such an apology and condemnation is forthcoming from Muslim religious leaders.

 

To deal with the root problem of Muslim terrorism, it is imperative to embark in a worldwide educational program designed to expose the immorality of the teachings the Koran which calls for the suppression and extermination of those who practice a different religion.

 

This strategy of exposing the immorality of the Koran's  teachings on the use of violence to advance the cause of Islam, may not be politically correct. It can alienate moderate Moslems living in the USA and overseas.  But I am persuaded that the truth that "hurts" is better than a lie that "soothes."

 

We need to help our Muslim friends understand that the  teachings of the Koran on the use of violence to advance the cause of Islam, are immoral and to be condemned by all peace-loving people. We need to help them understand that the sword of itself never brings peace to the world.

 

 Exposing the immorality of the teachings of the Koran on the use of violence, is not enough. Actions speak louder than words.

 

The reputed Muslim scholar Fareed Zakaria writes: "The historian Paul Johnson has argued that Islam is intrinsically an intolerant and violent religion.

 

Other scholars have disagreed, pointing out that Islam

condemns the slaughter of innocents and prohibits suicide.

 

Nothing will be solved by searching for 'true Islam' or quoting the Qur'an. The Qur'an is a vast, vague book, filled with poetry and contradictions (much like the Bible). You can find in it condemnations of war and incitements to struggle, beautiful expressions of tolerance and stern pictures against unbelievers.

 

At the James White library of Andrews university a listing of over 2000 publications dealing with different aspect of Islam are available.

 

 The intent of this essay is to help all peace-loving people around the world, including peace-loving Muslims, to better understand what is motivating some Moslem men and women to cause

unspeakable harm to innocent people, including themselves. How can sensible people choose to turn their bodies into weapons to destroy many innocent people?  This is the question that is

troubling many thinking persons today. 

 

We shall seek for an answer by examining the teachings of Islam from its primary sources, the Koran and Hadith (the collection of Muhammad's teachings). We want to ascertain whether the Koran teaches devout Muslims to advance the cause of Allah by peaceful persuasion or by violent warfare.

 

 It is not my intent to judge Islam as a violent religion on the basis of some terrorist acts done by those who claim to follow its teachings. Such a method of

interpretation is wrong, because not all who claim to act in the name of their religion are necessarily following its teachings.

 

The right method is to go back to the sources of Islam and see what they have to say about violence and peaceful coexistence with people practicing other religions. This is the procedure we shall follow by examining, first, what Islam has to say about warfare.

 

Some scholars view as futile the attempt to define the

teaching of the Koran and the Hadith (collected  teachings of Muhammad) regarding the use of warfare to advance the cause of Allah. The reason given by Moslem scholars like  Fareed Zakaria,

in the article cited earlier, is that "The Qur'an is a vast,

vague book, filled with poetry and contradictions (much like the Bible). You can find in it condemnations of war and incitements to struggle, beautiful expressions of tolerance and stern

pictures against unbelievers."

 

After consolidating his power, Muhammad explicitly ordered the use of offensive warfare against unbelievers. Scholars refer to these texts of the Koran  as the "Sword Verses." Here are two examples:  "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for

you. But God knoweth, and ye know not (2:216)."  "But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful (9:5)."

 

People like Fareed Zakaria cited earlier, maintain that the contradiction between those texts advocating tolerance and those urging warfare, simply reflect the contradictory nature of the Koran, which is a "vague book, filled with poetry and contradictions (much like the Bible)."

 

In Sura 8:12,13 Muslims are instructed to cut the necks and fingers of those who opposed God and to never turn their back on unbelievers: "Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): 'I am with you: give firmness to the believers. I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them. This isbecause they contended against God and His Apostle. If any contend against God and his Apostle, God is strict in punishment ... O ye who believe! When ye meet the unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them. If any do turn his back to them on such a day-unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own) - he draws on himself the wrath of God, and his abode is hell, - an evil refuge (indeed)! It is not ye who slew them; it was God."

 

The instruction is clear. When in combat, there is no room for second thought. Muslim soldiers are to finish the job by smiting the head and cutting the fingers of their enemies. The intent of these amputations was to make it impossible for the victims ever to fight again.

 

Sura 61:4,11-13 teaches that God loves those who fight in His cause with determination. He will give them victory, forgiveness of sins and admission to the pleasure of paradise: "Truly God loves those who fight in His cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure ... that ye believe in God and

His Apostle, and that ye strive (your utmost) in the cause of God, with your property and your persons. That will be best for you, if ye but knew!

 

He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to gardens [ Paradise ]  beneath which rivers flow, and to

beautiful mansions in gardens of eternity.

That is indeed the supreme achievement. And another (favor will He bestow), which ye do love-help from God and a speedy victory. So give the glad tidings to the believers."

 

 One of the benefits of fighting for the cause of Islam is the permission to take captured women as concubines, in addition to several legitimate  wives.

 

Sura 33:50: says: "O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their

dowers, and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom God has assigned to thee ... For the believers (at large), We know that We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess ..."  

 

The notion that God would assign  captured women as concubines to Muslim believers who fight for His cause, hardly reflect high moral standards  of the Islam faith. Polygamy and servile concubinage have destroyed the dignity of women and the beauty of the home. In this areas the infinite superiority of Christianity is clearly evident.

 

 By teaching that those who die fighting for the cause of Allah will have their sins forgiven and are admitted into the pleasure of Paradise, the Koran has inspired Muslims throughout the centuries to fight unto death for the cause of Allah.

 

Today it is inspiring young Palestinians become suicide bombers. For them a "martyr's death" is the surest and quickest way to a better life of comforts, prosperity, and pleasures in Paradise . "Suicide bombers" see themselves as carrying out the teaching of the Koran, while serving their communities and acquiring admission in paradise.

 

 Sura 55:52-58 describes Paradise …

The sensual element here, pollutes even Islam's vision of Paradise .  Believers are promised not only blooming gardens, abundant food, fresh fountains, but also beautiful virgins. Seventy-two beautiful virgins will be created for the enjoyment of the meanest believer.  A moment of pleasure will be prolonged a thousand years.  This pleasure-oriented Paradise differs radically from the Biblical view of the world to come as this planet earth restored to its original perfection for the habitation of the redeemed who will engage in productive activities and the elevating worship of God.

 

Stage Four: Offensive War is Commanded Against the Pagans, Christians and Jews.

 

There are several texts commanding offensive warfare to kill the pagans, Jews, and Christians. Among them Sura 9:5 stands out for its explicit injunction to slay the infidels: "When the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans

wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war).

 

But if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity [become Moslem], then open the way for them."  The best way for people to save their lives, was by renouncing their religion and

adopting the Islam faith. In some instances conquered people could save their lives by paying a heavy tribute and becoming submissive to Muslim rulers.

 

Sura 5:36-38 prescribes four types of punishments for those who oppose Allah and his prophet, Muhammad: "The punishment of those who wage war against God and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the hereafter, except for those who repent before they fall into your power. In that case, know that God is oft-forgiving, most merciful.

 

 The four types of punishments (cutting off the head, crucifixion, maiming, or exile), which were to be applied according to the circumstances, reveal the ruthless methods used by Muslims invaders to advance their religion.

 

The Teachings on Holy Warfare in Muhammad's Traditions ("Hadith")

 

 The teachings of the Koran on the use of the sword to advance  the cause of Islam, are corroborated by the collections of traditions ("Hadith") concerning the teaching of Muhammad. The nine volumes by Iman Bukhari are generally regarded as the most authentic of the Hadith literature. In volume 4 alone Richard

Bailey found 283 passages teaching holy warfare (Jihad) to advance the cause of Islam.

 

The "Jizya" is the poll tax paid by subjugated peoples in return for their right to exist.  Muhammad said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, 'None has the right to be worshiped but Allah,' and whoever says, 'None has the right to be worshiped but Allah,' his life and property will be saved by me except for Islamic law, and his accounts will be with Allah (either to punish him or to forgive him.)" (4:196 ). The order is clear. Muslims had to fight people until they became Muslims.

 

Muhammad came to accept the military Jihad as a legitimate and essential strategy to promote the expansion of Islam. No matter what people may think,

Muhammad was not only a religious leader, but also a military commander who waged war against his enemies as soon he consolidated his power and developed a fighting force.

 

Islam Expanded Through Warfare and Terror

 

 A most compelling proof that Muhammad taught his followers to advance the cause of Allah by the use of the sword, is provided by the example of his immediate successors, known as Califs. They

followed his intense fanaticism in waging relentless wars of conquests against Christians, Jews, and pagans. In a relatively short time they carved an enormous empire for themselves. At the height of their power, the Muslims'  territories stretched from northern Africa and southern Europe in the West to  the borders of modern India and China in the East. Their battle cry was:

"Before you is paradise, and behind you are death and hell." 

 

 

Anger Driving Terrorism

 

 The humiliation Muslims have experienced in the last two centuries, is a contributing factor to the anger that is driving terrorism today.  In recent years Muslims have been humiliated not only by the Jews in Palestine, but also by Christian Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo, by  atheistic or Christian Russians in Chechnya, and by Hindus in Kashmir and Pakistan.

 

 It is hard for some Muslims to accept the shame of their international failure.  Many Muslims are angered by the superior power of Western countries, especially America , because they still believe in the superiority of their religion and culture which they want to impose on the rest of the world.

 

 In his book  "Jihad in Classical and Modern Islam" ( Princeton 1996), Rudolf Peters, Professor of Islamic Law at the University of Amsterdam , observes:

 

"The crux of the doctrine is the existence of one single Islamic state, ruling the entire umma [Muslim community]. It is the duty of the umma to expand the

territory of this state in order to bring as many people under its rule as possible. The ultimate aim is to expand the territory of this state in order to bring the whole earth under the sway of Islam and to extirpate unbelief" (p. 3).

 

 The fact that the expansionistic vision of Islam to bring the  whole earth under its sway, has suffered constant set backs during the past two centuries, and especially in recent years, is inspiring some concerned Muslims to commit the terroristic acts reported in the daily news. Their aim is to show that in spite of their state of humiliation, Muslims are still capable of terrorizing Western superpowers like America . This is another way for them to show that Allah is still empowering them to accomplish their mission.

 

Is Islam a Peace-loving Religion?

 

 The preceding survey of the teachings of the Koran and of Muhammad's traditions (Habith) regarding warfare, discredits  the popular claim that Islam is a peace-loving, peace-preaching religion.

 

What Muhammad did is reflected in what he taught about fighting and slaying the infidels:  "When the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war). But if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity [become Moslem], then open the way for them"  (Sura 9:5).

If you have GOOD CASE just state the facts to the Judge and sit down.

If you have a 50% - 50% case mix facts with little misleading fiction.

If you have a BAD CASE, ABUSE THE OTHER SIDE LAWYER.
