De algún modo, en el transcurso de nuestras vidas todos somos, hemos sido o seremos cuidadores y personas a las que cuidar. El tipo de cuidado que se realiza con las personas más próximas, y que habitualmente es llevado a cabo por el cuidador informal, desempeña un papel esencial en la atención a los cada vez más numerosos mayores dependientes de nuestro país que mayoritariamente residen en sus hogares. La labor de estos cuidadores conlleva numerosos costes personales. Quienes asumen ese rol se hacen cargo de una gran cantidad de tareas, lo que les pone en una situación de alta vulnerabilidad y estrés, que incrementa el riesgo de padecer diversos problemas físicos y emocionales. Resulta esencial el apoyo a estos cuidadores, ayudándoles a cuidar y a cuidarse mejor. Ese es precisamente el objetivo de esta obra, mejorar, si no la situación en la que se encuentran los cuidadores, sí la capacidad de éstos para hacerle frente. Se trata de proporcionar a los cuidadores informales estrategias que les ayuden a manejar la situación en la que se encuentran, manteniendo en la medida de lo posible su bienestar y el de la persona a la que cuidan.
