I thought that the group would be interested in this just-released
video of a new concrete mixer for Haiti.

Thank you,

Very ingenious and simple "foolproof" system. I can tell you guys did your homework and nailed the real needs of developing nations in view of their concrete mixing needs.

Do they use slump cones in Haiti? Do they control the hydration process during curing? SO much that goes into concrete, so that it can comes out good.  Your better-ditch sure a step in the right direction.   Alan

Hi Alan,

We appreciate your comments and concerns for better building for
Haiti.

Yes I believe that they have access to concrete testing in Haiti. When
we started the testing in Oregon, we selected the lowest quality
aggregates that we could access and then had the concrete testing
company "air-cure" the samples to attempt to simulate Haitian
practices. Here are the results for 7 and 14-day break-tests:

(A) group: 4550 psi at 7 and 4540 psi at 14 (A group had less water in
the mixture)
(B) group: 3890 psi at 7 and 4260 psi at 14

When you consider that ground-mixed concrete has been reported in the
2800 psi range, it certainly points to the value of accurate material
batching and good mixture hydration.

Increasing the strength of the concrete, using better engineering,
correct reinforcements and connections should make a huge difference
in the next disaster. The question is if we allow them to rebuild
the same way as before, or use our resources to really make a
difference in their structures.

Thanks again for your continued input on this project.

Thank you for your comments on the mixer, Gilles.
We realize that many can not afford to purchase a robust mixer on
their own, but with the support of NGO's and small business loan
organizations, they should be able to get access to better tools.

chain: http://www.theconcretemd.com/PDF/SME%20Concrete%20Enterprises.pdf

Have a great day!

Dear Colleagues

I like this. Please keep me informed as the initiative moves from an
idea to actual implementation.

Another set of small businesses that should be established are private
independent "testing labs". The control of quality is an essential
aspect of serious civil engineering ... and small business and small
projects should be encouraged to do their work to a high quality just
as big organizations do. The independent testing lab is a key part of
the construction industry infrastructure

Peter,

The idea of adding quality control testing business opportunities into
the concrete supply chain plans for Haiti is fantastic. I will be
adding that to our Small and Medium Concrete Enterprise plan.

Testing labs would help to insure that only the best suppliers would
get more work, as word spreads that there is a way to check the safety
of the concrete.

Thanks for these great ideas, Peter...

Have a great day!

Peter,

You have a great point! Testing and oversight allow customers to measure
one supplier against another.

I do not know the initial investment in this type of small business, but the
testing lab that we use here in Oregon doesn't look to have a huge
investment. I am going to add this enterprise to the list of suggested
entrepreneurial activities that affect the concrete supply chain.

Thank you for your input on fixing the poor concrete system in Haiti.
Together we can raise the bar in structure safety.

Bruce
