a REALLY, REALLY good 51 page analysis of shelters that have been built in Haiti since the earthquake by NGO.

Architecture for Humanity releases Haiti Transitional Shelter analysis

Posted by karl johnson on Sep 21, 2010

An analysis on the condition of and future dependence on foreign aid transitional shelters ("T-shelters") in Haiti was recently compiled and presented by Architecture for Humanity to partners in Haitian reconstruction.

The 51-page report examines and compares 10 emergency shelter types currently housing thousands of Haitians in Port-au-Prince, Leogane and Papette. The report rates components for longevity, adaptability and satisfaction of users' needs amongst other criteria.

Transitional shelters are in wide use in Haiti as a fast, semi-permanent housing solution while permanent housing get underway. Refugees in post-disaster situations can expect to live transitionally for several years. This time frame may be extended in Haiti due to the decimated state of the land tenure archive and restricted access to construction materials.

The full presentation pdf can be downloaded here, with more details on the Haiti Reconstruction page of the Open Architecture Network.

Thanks Ivan, for the Post and the Phone call. The old Biblical analogy
"build your house on a firm foundation" fits here. As poor as T-
shelters are, they could at least be attached to the ground properly
so that they don't head-south, as did the metal prototype at Camp
Corail. (looked kind of metaphorical sitting on its roof...CNN)
The whole idea of a T-Shelter is wrong-headed, but the UN and SPHERE-
heads call the NGO shots, and these are lethal ones. For all that is
throwaway here, permanent shelter could have been equity for every
refugee from day one. Now with everything falling apart, re-rescue is
needed, but the Donors Have Left the Building. (to us)

Go to http://www.shelterusnow.com to see how SIM panels can make it
all happen. Check especially DISASTER RELIEF section and TESTIMONIALS.
$100 for a 4 foot by 8 foot panel that can hold up two mobile home
sectionals as a foundation?

Onward through the Bog....

To All,

Does anyone have a downloaded copy of the "Architecture for Humanity releases Haiti Transitional Shelter analysis"?

It looks like they removed the report from their website.

Thanks

That would be great. Thanks much.  I wrote to AFH but no answer. I will look for your email too, Gilles.

Hi Giles,

That would be greatly appreciated if you could email me a copy.

Maybe you can also post it on the Shelter Solution for Haiti Forum under the Files section...that way we all will have access to it. http://groups.google.com/group/haitisheltersolution/files

I wonder why it was taken off the AFH site?

When I examined the IASC T-Shelter designs in their Library of Best Practices...it seemed obvious that many of these shelters had certain design flaws and I could not see how they met the IASC design criteria. https://sites.google.com/site/shelterhaiti2010/technical-info/tshelter/t-shelter-designs

To change the subject, it seems little if any progress has been made with the land issues to build T-shelters or permanent shelters.  If lack of land is the biggest issue holding up the building of these much needed shelters why not bring in a bunch of deck barges, anchor them in the bays and inlets around PAP and build the shelters directly on the barges...once the land issues are resolved...move the shelters onto their new land sites.

I posted my ideas using my TESS concept on a barge, but got zero feedback.  We don't need to build or buy the barges, just rent them...better yet, get them donated.

A similar idea to bring in cruise ships to augment hotel space in cities hosting various large sporting events has been used very successfully in the past few years around the world.

Thanks again Giles,

All the best,

Edison

I thought you were part of the people I sent the file to.

I just read that Google group will no longer support the uploads of files.

Google suggests uploading to Google docs but I don't know if this group has a Google docs upload area.

For now, I will upload it one last time for you. After that, someone will have to find a solution so that this document becomes a permanent part of the resources of this group.

AFH says that the report will be up again soon. Their site is down for maintanence. Stay tuned. Sounds like this website is going the  way of the BBBC site? So sad, the whole thing.....21st century technology, 18th century communications, and 12th century shelter.
