I am writing to share with you Motivation’s report on Wheelchair and Seating Provision in Haiti (attached). As you know, Motivation carried out an assessment of the wheelchair provision situation in Haiti as well as conducting some basic training in wheelchair service provision. The key recommendations for actors to move forward with are near the end of the report (page 13). Apologies if this report has already been sent to you – I am unsure as to who has received it.
All in all we feel that there is a lot of potential for Haiti to move forward a model of appropriate wheelchair provision. However, this requires commitment from the local and international actors. Since our visit a wheelchair task force has been set up to specifically look at moving forward appropriate wheelchair provision and I hope that this manages to achieve some concrete actions. However, the group have fed back that it would be useful to have someone dedicated to moving this group forward – something that in the report we suggest that one of the international organisations working in Haiti might commit to supporting at least on a temporary or part time basis. With people with spinal cord injury unable to get wheelchairs with pressure relief cushions, and without any appropriate supportive seats for children with cerebral palsy, the need is undoubtedly urgent.
With very best wishes
