HOMILY OF THE 27TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR (OCTOBER 3RD, 2010)
Hb. 1, 2-3; 2, 2-4; Psalm 95; 2Tm. 1, 6-14; Luke 17, 5-10
The pathetic prayer of the apostles: ”Lord, increase our faith!” resonates well in our hearts! We also feel so deprived of that virtue. The prompt response of Jesus to their request further astonishes us: “If only you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this huge tree be uprooted and planted in the sea, it would obey you.” Is faith really that powerful? Is it true that through faith we can move mountains? That does not always fit our daily experience. The righteous man is frequently afflicted. Prayerful people oftentimes encounter great hardships in life. What can we make out of that teaching?
Some people have the misconception that great saints live in a state of constant delight in the presence of the Lord. A few years ago a book was published based on the notes written by Mother Teresa of Calcutta. To every one’s surprise she wrote in her diary that she experienced moments of intense anguish and uncertainties in the midst of her active life. Likewise, St Teresa of Avila known as one of the greatest mystics of all time spent twenty years of her life without any experience of God’s presence at her side. The following quip is attributed to her: “Lord, if this is the way you treat your friends, it’s no wonder that you have so few!” St John of the Cross another great mystic wrote many chapters of his book on the experience of the “Dark night.” Faith is an inner assurance of God’s power at work within us based not on sensitive experience but on sheer belief. It’s like the “crossing of the desert.”St Paul tells us “We walk by faith not by sight.” The profound trust that Jesus demands of us is reinforced when we fail to see immediate results, when we continue to trust while walking in the dark.
We are called to trust in God’s power even when the results we are seeking appear totally out of reach. Saint Paul was flogged five times by the Jews and three times by the Romans; he was imprisoned, his boat shipwrecked more than once yet he persevered in faith and brought thousands to conversion. True faith does not always bring immediate gratifications. Perseverance in faith produces countless fruit. We have to learn that great results flow not from our human efforts but from God’s grace. This is why Jesus tells us to consider ourselves as “unprofitable servants.” The efficacy of our labors comes from Him and Him alone.
Many religious groups attract large crowds promising sudden miracles to the believers. The texts of today’s mass focus more on the importance and power of the deep faith humbly experienced by what the Gospel describes as the faith of the ”unprofitable servant.’ That type of faith real and alive as the faith of Jesus carrying the Cross is exactly what is proposed to us.
The cross is never absent from the experience of faith. Saints have suffered martyrdom. May you and I never allow ourselves to be disturbed by the inevitable hardships of life! We walk by faith not by sight!
“The just man because of his faith shall live.”

Radaka’s Anniversary-Editorial

From left to Right Artist Ludwine Joseph and Doctor Farah Raymond Jean
Our friends of Radaka, the young adult prayer group, will celebrate their sixteenth anniversary this coming week. It will be a time of grace and blessings for Radaka, as the group reaches the age of maturity.
The Weekly Bulletin of The National Center of the Haitian Apostolate would like to congratulate Radaka for its profound dedication to the cause of evangelization of our brothers and sisters of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Radaka knows that prayer and action walk together, which is why the group’s members understand the necessity of supporting a school in Haiti.
The National Center also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Farah Jean, the group’s president, and the artist Ludwine Joseph, for their vision and their dream to see all youth leaders join the youth network of The National Center. It is essential that we continue to work for the emergence of new leaders. To do better in the future, we need to learn from the past, and we have to meet the challenge of bringing all the leaders together, if we want to play an active part in the church.
We really encourage Radaka to continue to work to bring people together, because nobody can win alone. In the church of Jesus Christ, there is always room for unity in diversity. Sometimes our divergence can be a source of richness, when we remember that we are brothers and sisters in Christ. We have to be tolerant and learn that, just because we may disagree, that does not mean we are enemies.
So, happy anniversary, Radaka. We are very proud of you. And we hope that a large number of youth leaders and youth groups will join with Radaka for this celebration at Holy Innocents Church in the Diocese of Brooklyn from October 6 to October 9, starting at 6:30 PM.

HAITIAN CASTHOLIC BISHOPS AND RECONSTRUCTION OF CHURCHES IN HAITI
Written by Bishop Guy Sansaricq. September 27, 2010
A meeting was held in Miami between September 22 and 25th about the reconstruction of the Haitian Churches destroyed by this year’s January earthquake. The US Bishops Conference’ Committee on Latin America sponsored the event in order to reinforce the dialogue between the Haitian Bishops and the other Bishops Conferences that want to assist in the rebuilding efforts of destroyed churches..
First it was necessary to assess the extent of the damage produced by the catastrophe. :
300 000 dead; 450 000 children either orphaned, handicapped or abandoned; 280 000 destroyed residential houses; 30 000 houses of commerce destroyed; 60% of the government infrastructures collapsed; 6 000 000 cubic meters of rubbles to be removed; 500 000 victims of the disaster in tent cities.
In terms of Church structures: 40 Churches buildings and rectories totally destroyed in the Diocese of Port-au-Prince; 14 Churches and rectories destroyed in the diocese of Jacmel. The Major Seminary in Port-au-Prince as well as all the buildings of the University Notre-Dame have also collapsed. A large number of Church institutions like Catholic Hospitals, Catholic Schools, the Montfort Institute for the deaf, orphanages have suffered the same fate. Other churches and Church buildings are still standing but have been severely damaged and made insecure for living.
The Catholic Churches of the US, Canada, South America and the Caribbean, the Churches of France, Germany and other European countries have expressed their solidarity and their willingness to assist in the Reconstruction of all these Churches and Catholic Institutions reduced to dust and rubbles. They have pledged close to $300 000 000.00 for that purpose. Yet, it was necessary to establish an understanding and an agreed upon mechanism for monitoring the channeling of the assistance as well as its judicious use.
That was exactly the purpose of that meeting that also involved international catholic institutions such as Adveniat from Germany, Caritas international, the Society of St Vincent, the Parish twinning Agency, the CRS (Catholic Relief Services), the Mustard seed and the association of male and female religious communities. Catholic Relief Services which is the official Emergency Relief agency of the US Catholic Bishops have been present in Haiti for the longest time. It is important to know that since the day after the earthquake they have been providing trucks of potable water, Medical assistance and delivery of food to 90 000 tent city residents on a daily basis. They have also assisted the Catholic University and provided aid in thousands of other ways.
The Bishops of the ten dioceses of Haiti, the Port-au-Prince Papal Nuncio and four emeritus Haitian Bishops were present. A US Cardinal and four other US bishops represented the US;
2
Bishops representing he churches of France, Germany, the Holy See, Canada, The Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Mexico and Argentina represented the European, Caribbean and South American Church. A number of experts were also at hand to handle the technical aspects of this protocol.
It was unanimously agreed that a new entity would be created to receive gradually the pledged amounts of financial aid and also to strictly monitor their use. All moneys destined to the reconstruction of Church buildings should be channeled through this entity whose mission will be also to oversee all construction sites in order to ensure that international codes of construction will be rigidly applied. Credibility demands the total transparency and the application of strict principles of accounting in all aspects of its operation.
PROCHE will be the name of that new entity: P standing for partnership, R for Reconstruction, O for of, and CHE for churches in Haiti. That name will also express the proximity or the closeness of the Churches of the world with Haiti. The French word PROCHE means close.
The meeting demonstrated in an admirable fashion the solidarity of the worldwide Catholic Church with Haiti. Indeed in the Church we are all ONE BODY as stated in Scripture. When one member hurts the whole body feels the pain.
The President of the Haitian Bishops Conference chairs PROCHE. But there will be many layers of responsibilities within which experts in administration, accounting, architecture and engineering will play key roles. Diaspora experts in these fields may apply for a position within that structure. Actually Diaspora members with international experience are strongly solicited to apply.
The creation of PROCHE was the fruit of this important Miami Conference that brought together some fifty people from ten different countries united around one objective: the spiritual and physical reconstruction of Haiti.
May the merciful Lord through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help bless these efforts and bring them to fruition for both the spiritual and physical rebirth of Haiti.

A New Member Joins Our Efforts - Meet Leah Bomberger
I am proud to welcome Leah Bomberger to the Mortel Foundation family. Earlier this month, she joined the team as the Assistant to the President and will be serving full-time in Haiti.
We have big plans ahead for Leah. She will be supervising the Feeding Program,
organizing and managing the schedule and menu for the children.
Leah can also be found in the classroom at Good Samaritan teaching the younger
students English conversation, as well as, monitoring the budget at the school
on a day-to-day basis.
In the near future, she will work with
the Congregation of Clercs de St. Viateur, who will be the administrators of
the James Stine College, the new secondary school.
She earned her bachelor's degree in International Relations from American
University in Washington, D.C. and shortly after graduation she visited Haiti
for the first time in 2008. She instantly fell in love with the people and is
now continuing our mission to help the children of Haiti. We are very excited
and eager for the great things to come.

», a souligné Mgr Tomasi.

Jan Mapou- Vant siyati-Liv Nouvèl Lochard Noel nan Miyami.
Samdi 25 septanm Lochard Noel fè vant siyati dènye liv li-a ki rele Une Saison à Jacmel suivi de villages. Seremoni-an fèt nan Moca Café sou 125èm ri ak 7èm avni nan Miyami. Tankou Gerard Campfort di nan prezantasyon ekriven-an “Lochard se youn zanmi, youn pitit kay, youn powèt, youn womansye, youn bon dizè nou tout apresye e dijere nan kominote-a.”
Atis komedyen Jesler Mezidor tranble sal-la ak kèk blag byen asezonnen ki soti nan dènye CD li-a Wounouwounou. Aubry BLag konpoze youn blag sou Mapou ak Met Zen ki fè anpil moùn manke pipi sou yo. Madanm Theodore di 2 bèl powèm ak youn diksyon ki te bay frison: Les plaintes de Toussaint Louverture au Fort de Joux, ak youn konpozisyon limenm menm ekri apre tranblemann tè 12 Janvye-a. Powèm yo byen di, madam Theodore te resevwa anpil bravo. Te gen tou Marcel Alexis nan 3 moso chwazi pou okazyon-an, yoùn ladan yo se te “Nous les deracines” powèm boulpik Lochard, Marcel mete an chante. Marcel Alexis, sèl sou gita-l, nan youn vwa ki fè nou sonje Ansy Derose dekachte bèl sipriz sila-a pou powèt Lochard Noel../sal la te tranble ak bravo lè Yolande Thomas limenm te chante “Zanmi” epi fèmen pati kiltirèl-la ak yoùn nan tèks Lochard Noel yo. Youn sware wololoy kote Gerard Campfort idantifye Lochard kòm youn powèt angaje ki ekri pou frè ak sè yo k’ap soufri, pou oprime ak “derasine” yo, ki montre li se youn gason ki gen kouraj, e ki fidèl nan literati-a.
Lochard pran lapawòl pou li remèsye asistans lan ki vin kore-l nan lansman dènye liv li-a. Ak youn vwa chaje ak emosyon li di kijan li difisil pou youn ekriven marye, k’ap travay 8-9-è pa jou, ki gen pitit ki pral lekòl, ki gen obligasyon anndan kay-li pou l’konsantre epi pwodui zèv literè ki gen valè ak bon kalite. Ekriven-an bezwen tan pou l’li. Li bezwen anpil tan pou l’pwodui. Fòk ekriven-an se youn pasyone.
Youn kouvèti ki montre youn bèl plaj ak vil Jakmel an pwojeksyon kòm twaldefon , antoure ak pye kokoye…youn reyalizasyon Educa Vision , sèl mezon dedisyon ayisyen nou ganyen nan Florid la. “Une saison à Jacmel” Se youn grap ti istwa tankou ti bouche. Chak ti bouche sa yo gen gou pa yo. Chak pote youn istwa diferan. 19 nan ti bouche sa yo ap dewoule nan vil istorik Jacmel, peyi madan li Elizabeth (Lili)nan youn epòk kote ni li ni Lili te pran desizyon pou yo te retounen al viv an Ayiti. Se youn bann ti istwa kout, rapid pafwa tris, pafwa komik, pafwa chaje ak gangans, Granpa osnon youn manm lafanmi ap rakonte. Tout rès istwa yo gaye pasi-pala nan peyi-a sou non “vilaj”, gen vilaj 1-3-4-5-6. Chak vilaj gen 12 ti istwa. Malerezman sanble editè-a sote vilaj 2-a si m’pa twonpe-m ta dwe genyen 12 ti istwa tou.
Men ak sèl diferans gen nan yo ki chaje ak pwezi men bonkou nan yo tou plis ti kapsil pou jounal. Kidonk fòm “Nouvèl” modèn sa-a youn tijan espesyal pou literati absid, imajinè, estil syansfiksyon,…. An amerik yo rele fòm istwa rapid sa-a ki san pati deskriptif ladann ki soti nan entwodisyon tonbe nan konklizyon san pase levye, yo rele-l short stories. Menm bagay an Kreyòl. Nou rele-l Istwa Kout. Nou ka jwenn ekzanp istwa kout an kreyol nan “Siloyiz” Kiki Wainwright ak “Anba Mapou-a”, (Jan Mapou)l; Patamouch (Max Manigat), Mozayik (Roger Savain). Ansòm ti istwa sa yo lè yo louvri zèl yo, yo ka parèt sou fòm istwa kondanse , nan literati franse-a yo rele yo “petit roman”. Tankou “nouvèl”, “ti woman” konsantre sou youn sèl evennman, nan youn anviwonnman limite, pèsonaj yo pa anpil, epi lè istwa-a fini se tankou youn kou sanzatann, apre youn bitay aksyon-an tonbe plat, an franse yo di “l’action tombe comme une chute” ki ka youn fraz osnon youn ti paragraph, youn pwovèb, youn sitasyon osnon li voye lektè-a al rekonèt li , fè rechèch tankou al chache kle pou louvri la “porte etroite” d’Andre Gide. (L.N)
Nan “Une saison ak Jacmel” Lochard eseye menm teknik lan. Nou jwenn kèk nan eleman sa yo. Istwa yo kout. Ekzanp “Eric le croque mort”, nan paj 31 apre msye fin rakonte youn bann vye koze sou jan li te konn manje vyann kamoken nan simityè li sou epòk Divalye yo, briskeman radyo anonse youn siklòn Eric kanpe konvesasyon-an sèk epi san di orevwa li jete-l pandan GranPa limenm byen move ap prepare pou poze-l plis kesyon. Menm bagay pou istwa “le café” nan paj 80. Kon di Dany Laferriere ta di pa t’ gen okenn kafe tout bon vre men tèks-la ap degaje youn odè kafe lakay ou t’ap di se Grann ki leve douvanjou k’ap fè youn bon ti kafe pou lafanmi. Pandan otè ap dekri pou montre kijan 2 medam yo se 2 gwo mantèz, de tripotye, de landyèz k’ap fabrike mandi sou moùn…Lè bagay la pi bon lektè-a kare ko-l pou l’pran zen, vizit la te bout…Y’ale pandan zen-an kontinye ap bouyi… san yo.
Nou panse Lochard Noel ak kèk tèks nan Une saison a Jacmel rive jwenn fòm “Nouvel” modèn nan ki se istwa kout nan langay pa nou. Sèl kritik sèke istwa yo twò kout, two rapid. Gen ki manke nannan. Bout kwann nan pwa-a manke. Memnsi si Nouvèl chita sou pwoz, anpil nan tèks yo twò dirèk. Twò sèk. Gen tou ki sitèlman rapid y’ap defile san paragraf (edante). Kòm powèt (angaje) Lochard ta ka wouze yo ak youn ti pikliz lapwezi pou ba yo plis gou kidonk mete plis gangans.
Angwo s’on bon travay. N’a jwenn “Une saison à Jacmel” nan Libreri Mapou. 305-299-9918

Haitian bishops considering program to oversee church reconstruction
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Haitian bishops were expected to agree Sept. 24 to the creation of a broad-based reconstruction program involving church partners from around the world that will guide how parishes and Catholic schools destroyed in the January earthquake are rebuilt.
They were meeting in Miami Sept. 22-26 with Catholic officials from the United States, Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guadeloupe and Mexico and the Inter-American Development Bank. The bishops were considering the proposal developed over several months primarily by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Relief Services.
The four-day gathering came on the heels of meetings Sept. 20-21 the Haitian bishops had in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, to discuss reconstruction needs and other church programs.
Called the Program for the Reconstruction of the Church in Haiti, the plan would establish a commission with both Haitian and international members that will review and approve parish projects and ensure that building plans meet construction standards based on appropriate building codes.
"It's going to create for both the church in Haiti as well as the episcopal conferences around the world that want to support the church in Haiti with a forum where they can really work together in solidarity," said Richard Balmadier, a CRS adviser to the U.S. bishops who crafted much of the plan. "It will provide support to the church in Haiti by basically creating a capacity there to help it realize its mission."
The Haitian church has struggled to recover since the magnitude 7 earthquake Jan. 12 destroyed 70 parishes, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Port-au-Prince, dozens of schools, several convents and the national seminary.
Three Port-au-Prince archdiocesan leaders -- Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot, Msgr. Charles Benoit, vicar general, and Father Arnoux Chery, chancellor -- were killed in the quake along with seven priests, 31 seminarians, and 31 men and women religious. The death of Archbishop Miot was particularly devastating because his concern for the poor made him a beloved figure among Haitian Catholics.
Archbishop Louis Kebreau of Cap-Haitien, president of the Haitian bishops' conference, has worked to rally church leadership to meet pastoral needs in the aftermath of the earthquake, which affected 20 percent of the country and a third of the population of 10 million. But Haiti's overwhelming poverty, coupled with the needs of 1.3 million people who remain in makeshift shelters in hundreds of camps in the earthquake zone, has strangled the local church's ability to respond adequately.
"Here you have a church that has suffered tremendous losses and is being called upon to do something that frankly a church in the prime of health would be very, very hard pressed to do," Balmadier told Catholic News Service. "To say they're in a very difficult situation is an incredible understatement."
Oblate Father Andrew Small, director of the Collection for the Church in Latin America for the U.S. bishops, said the plan was developed in collaboration with church representatives around the world including officials in Haiti.
International partners in the effort include Development and Peace, the Canadian bishops' development and relief agency; Adveniat, the German bishops' agency for solidarity in Latin America; Caritas Haiti; Society of St. Vincent de Paul; Conference of Religious of Haiti; and the U.S.-based Leadership Conference of Women Religious and Conference of Major Superiors of Men.
A working document outlining the program for the meeting's participants stressed the importance of building "solidarity partnerships" so that the effort does not appear to be one imposed on the Haitian church. It calls for building responsible local leadership that can respond to local needs and gradually become less dependent on outside help.
Father Small said the program also will require accountability and transparency and allow people who contributed to church special collections in the United States and elsewhere to know how money is being spent.
Through Sept. 23, American Catholics contributed $148.5 million to Haitian relief efforts. Worldwide, Catholics have donated more than $303 million for earthquake relief.
Of the total, $82.3 million was donated during special collections in dioceses in the weeks after the quake. CRS has collected an additional $66.2 million.
The U.S. bishops' Administrative Committee decided in March to allocate 60 percent of the special collection to CRS for humanitarian needs and use the remaining 40 percent for ecclesial needs, such as the rebuilding of churches and parish schools and restarting ministries. Based on the funds collected, $32.9 million is available for rebuilding the Haitian church.
"If we're doing this together," Father Small said, "there's the chance we'll have development that's truly sustainable, that's owned and run by the Haitians themselves."
Archbishop Bernardito Auza, papal nuncio to Haiti, told CNS Sept. 22 after arriving in Miami that the effort is "setting up what's always been absent in the church in Haiti."
"The idea (behind the commission) is to make sure the buildings will be built well and the money will be well spent," he said.
In addition to rebuilding local parishes, the archbishop is particularly focused on rejuvenating the country's formation program for priests.
He and Haitian church officials have identified a 650-acre tract 10 miles northeast of Port-au-Prince and are negotiating to buy the property. The site would include two seminaries for 350 students, housing for religious men and women and students, an elementary school and parish and a large-scale housing development.
The property is large enough to relocate the destroyed University of Notre Dame of Haiti as well, he said.
Estimated to cost $5 million initially, the project would be funded separately from the money collected by church agencies worldwide for earthquake relief, Archbishop Auza added.

Happy Birthday Bishop Guy
To Our Beloved Bishop Guy Sansaricq,

On October 6th, , Bishop Guy Sansaricq will celebrate his birthday. This anniversary is great blessing for the whole people of God in the Diocese of Brooklyn, and especially for the great Haitian Catholic community in both Haiti and in the diaspora, from which Bishop Sansaricq arose.
This shepherd is a great builder of faith one of the pioneers of the Haitian apostolate in the diaspora and the first director of radio Solidarite , the first Haitian Catholic radio on Internet. This radio will be a source of pride and unity for the vibrant Haitian Community in Diaspora and its friends . He is a very humble and prayerful man who has a deep love for his motherland, Haiti. In his view, Haiti is a source of strong pride for its sons and daughters. One of his fondest dreams is to see our community continue to serve the Lord in unity, love and solidarity. He does not have room in his heart for rancor and hatred, and he is always ready to forgive. He prefers to say nothing, rather than to say something negative about anyone. So he is a shining light for our community and our church.
This tremendous churchman is great mystic of our time, He takes at least two hours a day to surrender before his God and always asks his mother by excellence The blessed virgin Mary to protect his brothers and sisters of the Black community. The Staff of the National Center and the weekly bulletin is very grateful to Bishop Sansariq for his wisdom , his great love and his openness for the lay people of the Black community. We take great joy in knowing and working with him for so many years.
This Birthday is another opportunity both for thanksgiving and reflection by our community. In this jubilee year and the fourth anniversary of Episcopal ordination for Bishop Sansaricq, we must continue to ask God’s protection for our bishop, to express to him our gratitude for his accomplishments in the Haitian community, and to ask God to shower wisdom and love on our spiritual leaders.
For now, some leaders and friends of our community want to offer Bishop Sansaricq their best wishes.
Monsèyè Guy,
Mwen swete w bòn
fèt, An
menm tan tou mwen di w mèsi pou temwayaj senplisite ak devouman-w nan sèvis legliz ak pèp
Ayisyen-an.

We invite participation in the conference on October 23, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at St. John’s University on the Queens Campus D’Angelo Center Room 416. Since 2004, the Vincentian Chair of Social Justice and the Vincentian Center have developed programming under the theme “From Strangers to Neighbors” examining various aspects of human migration. This current effort is titled “The World is Here: Global Migration and Local Strategies”. Our aim is to see US migration in the context of the phenomena of global migration and to use Catholic Social Thought as the prism by which we examine some important concerns such as: Globalization and Employment; Violence against Migrants in Schools; National Policies and Immigration Laws; Women on the Move; and Intercultural Parishes. We invite participation by academics and practitioners as well as persons who are living the experience. The Roundtables, each led by an expert, will afford the opportunity to speak to and to listen to others at the tables. Please select your Roundtable and register early! Pre-registration is required. There is no fee for this conference. Kindly share this invitation with others who share your commitment to justice and peace for migrants world wide and especially in our communities.

On October 9, 2010, we will be celebrating our 35th year anniversary through our annual dinner dance event at Antun’s in Queens Village. Coming on the heels of a year that has been extremely trying for the Haitian community, this will offer an opportunity to rejoice in our common humanity, and take stock of the past, present and future challenges.
We hope that you will make our 35th Anniversary Gala an extra special one this year by partnering with us and the circle of leaders who have already helped us realize much of our dream. We are once again offering attractive platinum, gold, silver and bronze sponsorship packages that will reflect well on you and your constituents. Naturally, your sponsorship will automatically entitle you to membership in our leadership circle which, in addition to intimate private gatherings twice a year, provides you with special news briefs and opportunities for enhanced exposure. Individual tickets are $100.
Our gala event will be held at Antun’s, in Queens Village on October 9, 2010. In addition to celebrating our 35th year of service to an ever-growing community, we hope that we will be able to announce that, thanks to your generosity, support and partnership, we will be breaking ground next Spring!
For additional information and reservation, please call Sophia at 718-527-3776 x 17 or email sch...@haupinc.org.
Gratefully yours,
Elsie Saint-Louis Accilien
