HOMELY OF THE FEAST OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT ( (June 6, 2010)
Gen. 14, 18-20; Ps. 110; 1 Cor. 11, 23-26; Lk. 9, 11-17.
Whenever there is a birthday in a family, a festive meal is offered. At every anniversary, friends convene for a banquet. Something almost magic happens when people share a meal. Friendships are renewed, joy bursts from every corner. Wine generously poured out adds to the excitement of the festivity. Jesus who is very human in his approach uses every means that speak to the human experience to convey his message.
What is his message?
First that we must believe in the Father’s love for us, Second, believe in Him as the Son of God and the High-Priest who reconciles us to the Father. Third, repent and accept His gift of the Holy Spirit. Fourth, Love God and love one another as He loved us.
Now a special and powerful sign was needed to help us access these realities.
Let us briefly call to mind the meaning of Calvary. Jesus accepted to die on the Cross at the request of his Father. “The Father so loved the world that he did not spare His only Son for our sakes.” Jesus also loved us ” To The End” as he explained “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.”
Now it is our turn to apply to ourselves the benefit of Jesus’ Sacrifice.
We do it by “eating his flesh and drinking his Blood.”
In doing this we express many things: our love for God, our thirst to live in communion with Jesus and we open ourselves to the gift of the Spirit. We celebrate also our love for one another, in other term our “communion with one another.”
Mass is the meal of the New Covenant. When we receive communion, we renew our acceptance of the New Covenant achieved in the shedding of the Blood on the Cross.
We also embrace the commandment of love, “Because there is only One Bread, all those who share in the one bread and the one cup, must become One Body.”
The feast of Corpus Christi, the Latin words that mean “the Body of Christ,” in French “Fète-Dieu,” has one purpose: joyfully celebrating the greatness, the beauty of Jesus’ teaching about that Sacred Meal of the New Covenant, celebrating what we call “THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT”
We need to go back and read quietly the discourse Jesus made after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves in the Gospel of John, chapter 6. Read also 1 Cor, Ch 11.
He who eats of my flesh and drinks of my blood shall have eternal life and I will raise him on the last day. The blood of the cross comes to us in the form of a delicious wine. Let us join the processions of the day and sing with all our hearts God’s love for us proclaimed in the Sacred Meal of the New Covenant.
Let us show outwardly that we believe in the MYSTERY OF CHRIST and in living in communion with Christ, we accept to build up the body of Christ on earth,
That Body the Church that must remain forever unbroken.
Together we are the Holy Temple of the New Age.

An Island of Immigrants-Editorial
Long Island, the home of nearly three million persons, including an increasing immigrant population, will be the setting for the 28th Annual Convention of The National Center of the Haitian Apostolate at Hofstra University from June 11 to June 13. It coincides with the 50th anniversary of the priestly life of Bishop Guy Sansaricq.
This convention will be a wonderful opportunity for the Haitian Catholic community to enrich its mother the Catholic Church with its gifts: faith, resilience, and proud blackness, among many others. It will be also a tremendous opportunity to pray and to work together as one body in the church.
Many immigrants live in Long Island’s two counties, Nassau and Suffolk. About 56 percent of Nassau County’s immigrants live in the Town of Hempstead. In Suffolk, three-quarters of the immigrants live in the towns of Babylon, Brookhaven and Islip. According a report prepared for The Hagedorn Foundation, Long Island’ s immigrant population has grown dramatically over the past three decades. Immigrant Long Islanders added $10.6 billion to Long Island’s output and generated an estimated 82,000 jobs in 2006 as a result of their consumer spending.
Despite those strong contributions, immigrants on Long Island still confront many problems. Long Island is now considered the third most segregated region in the United States. Segregation by race and by class is a grim reality throughout the whole society on Long Island. We can even go so far as to call it a caste system. As Christians, we believe that racism is absolutely irreconcilable with Christian faith and belief. Other realities that immigrants face here include lack of public transportation, which makes getting to work so difficult.
At a time when we repeatedly talk about the importance of a good education for success in life, the schools are very segregated. There’s a significant gap between the 20 percent of school districts that are least affluent and the 20 percent that are most affluent. The wealthiest districts have almost $8,000 more per student available to spend on education. Schools in poor areas, where the population is predominantly black and Latino, are not really a good shape, because poor communities don’t produce enough tax revenue to make the schools better.
Is the Haitian community different from the other ethnic groups on Long Island? Is it always welcome in the host society of Long Island? We truly think that it is important for all of us to strive to have a place in this society where Haitian people, with all their dignity as children of God, can continue to make their contributions, just as other immigrants do—even though we carry with us the mark of poverty, the language barrier, and the twin problems of lack of integration and unemployment.
It is important for all of us in the Haitian Christian ministry to identify the challenges and the opportunities we face in this host country. Even though the United States fought a bitter and bloody civil war in which slavery was a central issue, it still has problems of racism and poverty. The poor always have a price to pay. Still, as a community, we can overcome obstacles if we work together and help our youth to get good educations.
It’s important to add that the Haitian community of Long Island also faces a problem of a lack of vocations to the religious life and the priesthood. It still has never produced a priest ordained in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. How can we participate in the decision-making in our church when we don’t have people in pivotal positions? Do Haitian priests have a pastoral plan to encourage our young people to commit themselves to God in religious or priestly life? Is the diocesan vocation office doing enough to identify young people with religious vocations? Are we as lay people doing enough?
The need for leadership among our youth is another vital issue facing the Haitian ministry. In this time of economic crisis and pressures, they find it difficult to attend spiritual events or church activities. Are the leaders of the church doing enough to accompany, support and welcome our youth?
So the 28th Annual Convention will be an excellent opportunity to be with the Haitian community on Long Island, where between 15, 000 and 20,000 of our Haitian brothers and sisters live and continue to make valuable contributions as immigrants and children of God in the caste society of Long Island.
We believe that the presence of many ethnic groups in the church on Long Island is a divine blessing and mirrors the inner life of God. We have to strive to encourage solidarity among ethnic groups. We ask the Holy Spirit to help our leaders to understand the importance of uniting our community and to help the leaders of the host society to appreciate and to support the diversity of peoples, languages, culture and colors, because before God all men and women have the same dignity, whatever their nation and their culture.

Welcome to the 28th Annual Convention of The National Center of the Haitian Apostolate, at Hofstra University, from this Friday, June 11th, to this Sunday, June 13th. It will be a great time for all of us, especially our brothers and sisters in Long Island. This convention coincides with the 50th anniversary of the priestly life of Bishop Guy Sansaricq, the first Haitian-American bishop in the diaspora and the director of The National Center. It will be three days of intense prayer and formation, led by an impressive group of speakers, workshop leaders, musicians, priests, sisters, and the people of our network. We would like to thank all of them, and all of you, who have helped us to prepare for this convention.
The theme this year is: “Priest Forever.” Bishop Sansaricq and Father Yvon Pierre strongly believe that together we can build greater unity for our community, but only with Jesus Christ as our center. The work of The National Center is always evangelization and building unity in the Haitian community in the diaspora. At the heart of that work are always Jesus Christ and our community.
Bishop Sansaricq and Father Pierre thank all of the Haitian professionals, all the delegations, his wonderful brother priests, Father Allan Figueroa Deck of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the speakers, the workshop leaders, the youth group leaders, the artists, the special guests, the Haitian leaders of other Christian denominations, and all our youth for their attendance.
Bishop Sansaricq and Father Pierre urge the whole community of faith on Long Island, of all ages, to join us for the 28thth Annual Convention. This year, we expect delegations from, Atlanta, The District of Columbia, Ohio, Canada, New York, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Bishop Sansaricq, together with all of us at The National Center, is very grateful to all the delegations for giving of their time to travel and join us.

Doctor Poulard-Exclusive interview
Dr. Jean-Bernard Poulard is an active member of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad, currently serving as 2nd vice-president and chair of its post-graduate education committee and its disaster preparedness committee. He is a former regional director for quality management at the Queens Health Network, a position he occupied until 2003, when he was named deputy medical director. Dr. Poulard is a strong advocate for high-quality medical care for all, especially vulnerable minorities, and believes in a strong medical education to instill knowledge, compassion and empathy. His work in preventing colon cancer through better screening is an especially valuable contribution to public health. I am very honored to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Poulard for the column “Religion and Society” and the friends of The National Center.
Good morning, Dr. Poulard. Could you begin by giving us a brief description of your hometown?
Good Morning Brother Tob
My parents are from the Sud-Est (Cotes de Fer, Jacmel), but I was born in Hinche and I grew up in Port-au-Prince in the 60’s. I have happy memories of those days, but I also know that they were not easy for my parents.
Please tell us something about your education.
I did my primary school at Jean-Marie Guilloux and attended St Louis de Gonzague until 1969. I then joined my family in New York and I completed one year of High School at Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn. I studied Chemistry and Mathematics at Hunter College in the City. I went to Medical School in Syracuse, NY. My residency training was in General Surgery at Long Island Jewish Hospital, and I did a year of fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical School in St Louis, Missouri. I also studied Business Administration at Baruch College and hold an MBA with health care specialty.
Tell us about your childhood and the influences that led you ultimately to become a physician.
In Haiti as you know the choice of profession was rather limited when I was growing up. You either did Medicine, Engineering, Law or Education. My father was administrator at the General Hospital, and my mother was in charge of the facilities for interns and residents, making sure they were fed, had a decent place to rest and shower and clean linen and things like that. I was always interested in the sciences and could not wait for the next issue of “Tout l’Univers” the encyclopedic weekly magazine that explained everything. At St Louis, there were some influential teachers who encouraged service to others, so I was able to enter a profession that gave me intellectual fulfillment and hopefully some opportunity to do some good.
Could you tell us about some of the highs and the lows of your work as a Haitian physician?
I cannot say there have been many lows professionally. I have witnessed some discrimination against young Haitian professionals and one always had to prove oneself. Thank God I am mainly interested in doing good work and do not seek credit or recognition; otherwise I would have had many lows. I have been fortunate to work in institutions that serve a large population of immigrants, and many Haitians so I get extra professional satisfaction. Every day, I try to make a High happen; I have the opportunity to affect someone’s life, health, well being for the better or help a person have a positive experience in our difficult health care system.
What does it mean to you to be Haitian and a scientist in the United States?
As they say medicine is both an art and a science. I see the science of it as a necessity to achieve a goal which is quality health care and service to the patients I serve. But even though it is important it is probably not the most important part of the equation. Genuinely caring and having empathy and being dedicated to excellence will take you a lot farther in my profession. We have a lot of very talented Haitians in all the fields of study in the US. Many have achieved great feats and recognition. Our writers (Dandicant, Laferriere), our engineers and designers (Dambreville) and countless others continue to make us proud.
Could you explain to us your work on the council of the New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons?
The NY Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is the association that keeps the flame lit in this part of the country. It is responsible for promoting the specialty, encouraging young physicians to join its ranks by exposing them to the specialty. It communicates to the public the benefit of receiving care from specialist with special training in diseases of the colon and rectum. It is involved in disseminating information and raising awareness for certain conditions that are preventable. It is involved in the fight for the prevention and eradication of colon and rectal cancer. The council is the advisory to the executive committee of the organization. It’s like being on the board of directors. We determine the general direction of the organization and set the agenda. I served on the council for 3 years
Could you tell us of your experience coordinating the third-year surgery clerkship at Stony Brook University Medical School?
This was early after I finished my fellowship. I was given the assignment to coordinate the surgery rotation for the medical students. This was a lot of fun and opportunity to grow for me. I enjoyed the challenge of introducing young minds to the surgical discipline. It is one of the hardest time in medical school. The hours are long, the work never ends, sleep is in short supply, the academic demands are enormous and you are supposed to make it enjoyable for the students. I organized the didactic portion of the curriculum: the school set up the general goals and I made sure they received the lectures, conferences, seminars. I managed their time and worked with others on the faculty to make sure they received a stellar exposure to surgery, success was measured by the number who elected to pursue a career in the surgical field after the rotation.
Could you tell us about the AMHE’s contribution to the hospitals and the general populace in Haiti?
AMHE was founded by a group of Haitian physicians who had received their medical education mostly at the University of the State of Haiti. Obviously their allegiance was to their alma mater. At the University Hospital AMHE had established a visiting lecturer program where specialists would travel and teach courses and make patient care rounds with the resident physicians. The dialysis center at the general hospital was established with the help of AMHE, so was the electronic library. AMHE renovated “La Maison des Etudiants” and supported its function to provide low cost meals, a place for rest and recuperation after long hours of work, and shower facilities. Together with SIMACT, the organization has secured block of 3 month rotations in US hospitals for Haitian Physicians in training and has financially supported their stay in the US. AMHE also helps the communities in the US by disseminating health information via multiple radio programs, health fairs.
Please tell us something about the role of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad after the devastating earthquake of January 12.
The response to the Earthquake has been tremendous. The organization mobilized its resources swiftly and was able to get physicians, nurses and technicians, social workers, pharmacists in Haiti. Medicine and Supplies were collected and transportation secured for people and materials. Registration sites were set up for volunteers and travel arrangements and logistics were put in place and a steady flow of volunteers both Haitians and non-Haitians were able to go and help. The rotations have continued to date. Members have worked with a number of organizations that were also responding to the disaster: Project Medishare from the University of Miami, Partners in Health, the International Medical Corps. In Haiti, groups have gone to Jacmel, Pignon, Milot, Cayes, in addition to multiple hospitals in Port-au-Prince Hopital General, St Damian, Hopital de la Communaute, Hopital la Paix, Eliezer Germain. With support from AMHE two sterile operating rooms have been renovated and are ready to function, light bulbs replaced, and in process helping the hospital secure means of securing Oxygen supplies. Members are continuing to work for the long term solutions of providing health care, but AMHE wants to work with the structures in place and help them become stronger and more responsive and reliable to assure sustainability.
What do you think should be the top priorities in the reconstruction of Haiti?
Where do you start? Things were dysfunctional before the earthquake and the whole world was able to see first hand that there was a bare minimum of organizational structures to get anything done. After the disaster the question is whether to go back to the status quo or take the opportunity to build the systems and institutions necessary for the betterment of the whole population not just a few fortunate ones. I would not venture to tell you I have the answers. It is for all Haitians, those in Haiti and abroad, to re-examine their social covenant and come to a solution that will remove the label of the “poorest country in the western hemisphere” off. The international community will not and should not continue to provide for free the basic necessities that Haiti and Haitians can produce. It’s important to rebuild the local economy. The creation of jobs, the decentralization of the capital, the development of sustainable urban centers, management of the terroir, power and water management projects, roads, waste management are all important. Tents are not a long term solution. Mid term solutions need to be in place now. Notice I did not list health first, but it is understood that health and education are the undergirder of a solid edifice for the future. The need for basic education is more dire as the workforce has to be modernized and brought up to 21st century standards. Despite the need for health institutions, without the economy providing the means to support a reasonable and suitable health infrastructure, Haiti will remain dependant on the outside for a significant part of its health care needs. It is a sad fact that there are more than enough Health care personnel abroad to fill the needs of the country.
What are some of the key projects and challenges of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad?
AMHE is concerned about the ramp down of the response to the disaster in Haiti. What happens after the international help leaves? Who will continue to do the work? The infrastructure was weak but it will be worse. The Medical Schools need to restart, how do they do it? The University Hospital needs to function as the tertiary hospital center to care for difficult and complex conditions, how do we help the administration achieve that objective? How do we build capacity and connect the different players to assure a better response if we have another disaster? On this side, we are working on developing and solidifying partnership with local, public, private, and philanthropic groups with a common goal of improving the lot of those living in Haiti. The challenge is to keep the energy and enthusiasm of the members when the road gets difficult and the roadblocks are encountered. Many good ideas have floated but AMHE does not have the financial clout necessary to do many of the things it has identified as necessary, so priorities have to be set.
Please tell us how you use your pivotal position as a leading physician to advance the cause of Haiti.
I am fortunate to work in an institution whose mission is to provide quality health care to all regardless of the ability to pay, so the leaders understand and have been receptive to my requests for help when I have had to ask. I try to speak on behalf of the people of Haiti who have suffered so much most through no fault of their own. I pray they get enlightened leadership and be given the opportunity to catch up to the rest of the world through education, better living conditions and access to basic health and other services. I try to leave time to respond to invitation to speak and share the little experience I have working in the community and in Haiti. I have been to Haiti twice this year since the earthquake and plan to go again and continue recruiting volunteers in all spheres of expertise to join us. Most of all I teach patience.
Do you have a message for young people?
I have been pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of love and energy by the young people of Haiti. Even though many were born or raised here or came here very young, and some do not even speak creole they were there helping in any way they could. I salute their generosity and enthusiasm and sense of purpose. They should not forget the country despite their difficulty in understanding why it is so hard to get even the easy and obvious things done down there. They are the future and a link to the chance for Haiti to come out into the 21st century a better place and remake it the pearl of the Antilles.
Thank you, Doctor Poulard, for agreeing to answer our questions. We really appreciate your generosity in sharing so much of your time with us.

Star of the Week- Carrié Solages
Carrié Solages, immigration attorney
and human rights commissioner
The Weekly Bulletin of The National Center of the Haitian Apostolate is very happy to acknowledge Commissioner Carrié Solages as the star of the week. Mr. Solages is one of greatest figures in the Haitian Catholic community on Long Island and a good friend of The National Center.
After high school, he attended the most exclusive school at Georgetown University, The School of Foreign Service, where he studied international history. Carrié was very fortunate to learn from national and international leaders, including Bill Clinton, who had also attended SFS as a young man. Carrié graduated from Georgetown and went on to attend Boston College Law School. While there, he focused on constitutional law, civil rights law and First Amendment law. Selected in a joint Harvard Law and Boston College Law legal historical studies program, Carrié produced research catalogued by both institutions. Also during law school, Carrié worked as a legal intern at Catholic Charities of Boston, where he helped many low-income residents gain a pathway to citizenship. Carrié now practices law on Long Island. His practice includes immigration law. In addition, he serves on the Commission on Human Rights of Nassau County.
The staff of The Weekly Bulletin is very happy to congratulate Carrié Solages for his achievements as a professional. He is really a great example for our youth.

LETTER OF BISHOP SANSARICQ TO ALL PRIESTS AND DEACONS
I urge you with all my heart to participate in the upcoming Convention. If you have not yet registered do it this week!
On Friday June 11 at 7 p.m., Dr Donald Pope-Davis the first African American Vice President of Notre Dame University in Indiana will deliver the first talk on the crucial importance of education and leadership development in the minority communities.
Following him, Dr. Rodrigue Mortel the first Haitian Professor of Medicine in a prestigious American University and, a writer of books and now a deacon and the Director of the Department of the Propagation of the Faith in the Diocese of Baltimore will offer his views on the Reconstruction of Haiti. We should note that Dr. Mortel has a large successful program of development in Saint Marc. We need to hear this genuine witness of the faith.
Saturday (June 12) our keynote speaker will be Fr. Wismick Jean-Charles a Montfort priest with great theological background. His topic is the value, greatness and distinctiveness of
a) The common priesthood of the faithful
b) The ministerial priesthood.
At 11 p.m. the Liturgy will take place.
Note that there will be a separate program for the youth in a different hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Don’t fail to make your young people benefit from this experience.
The objective of the Convention can be articulated as follows:
1.- Provide the participants (Priest and Lay) with a sense of Church, a reality that extends
beyond the boundaries of a parish or a Diocese.
2.- Enlighten the participants on a particular point of Doctrine that will enable them to
be better pastoral agents when they return to heir home parish.
3.- Facilitate exchanges between Catholics of different areas so that “better practices”
may emerge.
When the faithful do not see their pastors, they are terribly disappointed.
Strength is in unity. The Church has no right to be scattered. There are areas where the Haitian Apostolate is inexistent. Vast programs can be developed for the benefit of all.
Haitian Doctors, Haitian Nurses, Haitian engineers plan together ways and means to assist the mother country. Can religious people offer a spectacle of apathy and disunity?
I am sure you will come to support this 28th Convention the work of a nucleus of selfless
Catholics who simply seek the glory of God through His Church. Please come and show your fraternal love and support!
I very much look forward to seeing you. Be assured of my great love in the heart of Jesus.
Your Big Brother +Guy Sansaricq

kèk mo an kreyòl – ki preske tounen pou mwen lang manman mwen, Yo te konn di,
Miyami se dizyèm depatman an, jodi a lè m wè prezans Nons Apostolik Ayiti a ak
Jodi a, mwen tounen lakay, mwen tounen Miyami kote m te premyè kontre
ak kominote ayisyen an.
Mezanmi, kouray pèp ayisyen an malgre tout dezas - tout kalite ak tout jan –
entak. Epi, li di jounalis la: men, li.

Happy Anniversary to Bishop Sansaricq
My vocabulary is too poor to express who Bishop Sansaricq really is as a person, a friend, a priest, a pastor, and a bishop. But expressing a few words on the occasion of Bishop Sansaricq’s anniversary is of paramount importance.
Bishop Sansaricq is a true witness of Christ, a true man of faith, and an inspiration for me as priest. What can a priest learn from Bishop Sansaricq?
First, Humility is one of the first qualities of Bishop Sansaricq. He always makes you feel that he is someone you can talk to anytime. He can relate to anyone at your level. I wish to keep this simplicity of Bishop Sansaricq in the back of my mind.
Second, Bishop is a servant, not someone who is waiting to be served. He always makes himself available to talk and to listen to anyone. His sense of listening is amazing. He always has time for his brother priests. Wherever a priest is confronting difficulties or challenges, he always brings or sends his support and encouragement.
Third, Bishop Sansaricq is someone who sees everything with the eyes of faith. He is a true inspiration for me as a priest in moment of dark days. There is no challenge you cannot meet once you put your faith in Christ, according to Bishop Sansaricq. If a priest or anyone gets discouraged, he must see Bishop Sansaricq. He can help you look beyond earthly realities. You will never go empty handed.
Last, Bishop Sansaricq is a sincere person. While he is encouraging you on few good things you have, he is telling you what to correct in yourself as a person with gentleness. He is honest and true to you. He can help you cross a river with confidence knowing that he is holding your hands.
What a brother! What a friend! What a pastor! What a Bishop! What a true servant of Christ!
Bishop Sansaricq, your friends and I in Atlanta, Georgia, wish you
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
Thank you for serving the Church with such a distinction and integrity
Thank you for being a friend, priest, pastor for us all.
Father Guyma Noel
Pastor at Christ Our Hope Catholic Church
Heureux anniversaire, Son Excellence!

Chacha:
Happy birthday! You show through your sermons and good deeds that you are a true son of St Louis Marie Grignion de Monfort, the founder of your community. We are so blessed to have you in the diocese of Rockville Centre. On the occasion of your birthday may the Lord enrich your soul and mind with new lights and new power so that your ministry will continue to grow in fruitfulness! Love and Blessings!

Jamais tu n'iras trop loin!
Wismick Jean Charles. »
