Construction and agricultural sectors depend on Haitian labor

According to representatives of employee’s unions, the agricultural and construction sectors are not of interest to the Dominican worker due to low wages. That is why they are replaced by Haitian labor. However, the Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, affirms that salaries in the agricultural area are the ones established by the Ministry of Labor. Cruz said, “That's not true. The salaries of foreigners and Dominicans are the same”.

Prices of medicines and clinical supplies increase

The prices of medications for daily use such as those for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic diseases have skyrocketed from 10% to 20%. The paper quotes a source stating medicines have not risen in price because of the dollar or the inflation rate, but because of maritime fleets, since 90% of medical supplies come from China and delays continue after COVID-19 pandemic.  

 

Former U.S. Ambassador advises Dominican ministries on relations with the United States

Former U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic James W. Brewster said during an interview with journalist Katherine Hernandez  that his company Patino Brewster & Partners advises some Dominican ministries on commercial matters and international relations. “We are currently working with a couple of ministries here in the Dominican Republic to build relations with the United States, we are also working on connecting the Haitian ambassador and his relationship with the United States, and there are other governments with which we also work,” he explained.

Dominican Republic Senate President Eduardo Estrella presented a special distinction to Aquilino Antonio Gonell, a Dominican-American Capitol Police sergeant who defended the US Capitol on January 6 of 2021. Estrella and the senator for the province of María Trinidad Sánchez, Alexis Victoria Yeb, highlighted the courage of Gonell, who was seriously injured during the assault on the Capitol.

According to Listin Diario more than 400,000 kilograms of cocaine transit through the Dominican Republic every year. But only between 7% and 10%, about 28,000 kilograms, of this drug remains in the Dominican Republic; the rest is shipped to other destinations in Latin America or even Europe. "Local drug traffickers handle approximately 2,333 kilograms of cocaine, which is then increased with a mixture of other substances prior to sale (…) This drug, and others such as marijuana, ecstasy, crack, heroin, and hashish, are distributed and sold in more than 39,000 points throughout the national territory and in Puerto Rico.”

 

European Union donates one million euros to the Dominican Republic to prevent gender violence

The Dominican Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development informed that the European Union donated one million euros to the DR to promote and implement a prevention strategy against gender violence and inequality, as well as improving prevention and care services for women, adolescents and girls.

 

Firefighters control forest fire in Valle Nuevo National Park

Firefighters managed to control the fire that has affected the Valle Nuevo National Park since last weekend. Gerónimo Abreu, in charge of the National Fire Management Program of the Ministry of the Environment, explained that to mitigate the advance of the flames, firebreak lines were drawn to eliminate the existing fuel, taking into account the direction of the wind in the area of ​​the event.
