Jean Henry Céant, President Aristide's Secret weapon?
By: Romeo Estinvil
According to reliable sources. Jean Henry Céant, the candidate for the presidency for an obscure group referred to as AIME HAITI, is the unofficial candidate for the Lavalas Party of former president Jean Bertrand Aristide. If these so-called elections take place as scheduled next November, they will for sure contribute to further aggravate the awfully and complex predicament in which the country is lagging. The electoral body has already permitted 19 candidates to become involved in the race.
The Party's approach is uncomplicated and focusing on two main aims. First off all, the Lavalas’s ideologues recognize that social and political stability in this Caribbean nation is not truly a concern for the international community. These donors’ countries choose to have elections, even if the conditions are not met. As long as President Preval and his supporters can safeguard their strategic and economic interests, the democratization course is making substantial progress. With these reflections, Lavalas has decided to send in any case a candidate to this farce, an Aristide former protégé whose name is Mr. Jean Henry Ceant.
Henry Ceant with would be first lady
Mr. Céant is a well known lawyer and public notary whom never been overtly implicated in politics. He is from Croix des Bouquet, situated in the north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Jean Henry’s wife, Ginette Céant who now resides here in Boston, was President Aristide private secretary during his second term. The couple would have benefited much favor from the former deposed litigious strongman. The Ceant’s family owns several real estate properties and acres of land in the La Plaine region. Few months ago, Ceant and his friends launched AIME HAITI, a “social and cultural movement” that had been promptly metamorphosed into a political organization. Furthermore, the newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported that Céant’s 87-year-old mother, Marie Celima Céant, had traveled this month to Haiti from the U.S. to escort his son when he was filing official documents for his presidential bid.
In contrast, the branch of Maryse Narcisse, Rene Civil, Jacques Matellier, Paul Raymond, and Ancito Felix is organizing street protests demanding Rene Preval’s departure and members of the Provisional Electoral Council, CEP. They have argued that the publication of the candidate list proved that the CEP is ready to hold bogus elections. Being accustomed to the political structure, these sharpshooter warriors have understood that Preval is no longer willing to cohabite with them. President Preval as a malicious strategist is shielding his political inner circle for many obvious good reasons; he would refuse to go into exile or jail.
In Port-au-Prince, many observers argue that one of Lavalas tactic may ultimately succeed. A Political Sciences Professor at Quiskeya University, who wishes to remain anonymous, considers President Preval politically deceased; he can not transfer his legacy to his party's candidates, UNITE. His party is too fragmented, several senators projected to be the party presidential contender. Instead, the President chose to hand pick a low profile candidate, Mr. Jude Celestin, long time friend of his wife Elisabeth. Now, Mr. Preval has little alternative other than using of reconstruction money to rally the populace for his cause. Everybody knows that, without the support of Aristide partisans, the President is like a general without an army.
The Lavalas members joined Ceant in Arcahaie
Zealous Aristide supporters are now fully devoted to the cause of Preval and his UNITE. Most recently, they are in the government as ministers, department heads or special advisers. I am referring to militants as Yves christalain, Joceleme Privert, Nahoum Marcellus, Jude Celestin, Marjorie Michel, Dady Lescouflair, and Marie L. Lassegue. The high rate of unemployment has forced people to switch political affiliation. The late former Prime Minister Mark Bazin was right when he declared: numbers of people are simultaneity members of two or three political organizations. In other word, they have no ideological conviction.
In statements made last week in the local press, Mr. Céant reported to receive death threats through anonymous telephone calls. President Preval is ready to everything, even physical elimination of political opponents, to retain power, he emphasized. It appears that Jean Henry Ceant has no intention of capitulating to the machinations that would be the target. Also, trusty sources are confirming that Jean Henry Céant has in several occasions left Port-au-Prince to meet with President Aristide from his golden exile in South Africa. This October 17th is the date scheduled for the opening of the electoral campaign; Mr. Céant has soon to return to Pretoria to conclude a joint agreement with the Lavalas party. When the time has come, the party will formally ask thousands of its followers to support AIME HAITI.
Last week, several statements made by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, have indicated the international community is ready to endorse the Preval’s tricks. Mr. Insualza, who was visiting Port-au-Prince, assumed that the current Provisional Electoral Council is capable to hold credible and fair elections. I do not see why people do not trust the CEP, he concluded. During this one-day visit, he met with the Haitian authorities including President Preval and Prime Minister, Jean Max Bellerive.
I have no doubt that the executive is doing everything possible to block the road to the presidency to Jean Henry Céant. This government is working hard in order to deliver on a golden platter the power to Jude Celestin. Sadly, loyalty in politics is equated with weakness for Rene Preval. He betrayed his political Lavalas and his former campaign manager from 2005 to 2006, former Prime Minister, Jacques E. Alexis. Following the hunger protests, on April 12, 2008 Mr. Preval shamefully dumped his comrade Alexis. That day, under his instigations, the parliament had censored the government of Alexis. It is clear what the donor countries are endorsing in Haiti is erroneous.
Eventually, I assume the Haitian people will stand up and say no to this
government idiocies. Haitians must take charge of their own fate by choosing leaders who are both knowledgeable and accountable. It is almost a historical predictability for the country; these gentlemen not often control the reigns of power. The world is almost fatigued with our predicaments.
Ceant is definitely not accountable.

-----Jean Henry Céant, President Aristide's Secret weapon?
Few months ago, Ceant and his friends launched AIME HAITI, a “social and cultural movement that had been promptly metamorphosed into a political organization.
