DR Government will finance the education of 100.000 children

The Minister of Education, Ángel Hernández, reported that the Dominican government will grant economic bonuses to families with children who did not enter public schools and will finance "opportunities in private schools."

DR attends the IV Forum of Science, Technology and Innovation CHINA-CELAC 2022

President Abinader supports Open Skies policy agreement with the U.S.

Dominican President Luis Abinader reported that the government has made great progress in talks with the United States government to sign an open skies policy agreement between the two countries.

He said that the Americans are very interested in this agreement, and that is why he understands that there are no criticisms or questions to the Civil Aeronautics Commission, as the body that handles decisions on authorizations of airlines in the Dominican Republic.

The U.S. Embassy confirms, “For better service to our immigrant visa applicants and to maintain social distancing, the Immigrant Visa Section suggests that applicants attend the interview without children under the age of 14, unless their presence is requested (...) Likewise, a child under the age of 14 is only required to be present if he or she is the only applicant on your petition.”

 

 

Eight Dominican films will be screened at the New York Latino Film Festival

The Film Directorate of the Dominican Republic reported that eight Dominican films would be presented at the New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF), which will be held between September 12 and 18. The founder of the NYLFF, Calixto Chinchilla, expressed his "emotion" for bringing "some of the best films from the Dominican Republic" to the event in Manhattan, and invited the Dominican diaspora "to support our stories, filmmakers, and talent.”

1,200 schools are vulnerable to earthquakes

Dominican Medical Association (CMD) rejects termination of director of the Center for Psychosocial Care and Human Development (RESIDE)

Senen Caba, president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), rejected the recent dismissal of psychiatrist José López Mena as director of the Center for Psychosocial Care and Human Development (RESIDE).  Caba warned that the CMD would support Dr. López Mena, who assures he was dismissed from the position for having publicly denounced the precariousness with which the service operates.

Haiti asks for international support to fight against gang violence

Prime Minister Ariel Henry called for international help to combat gang violence in Haiti and pledged once again to work for elections to mark the anniversary of taking office after the president's assassination. Henry condemned the violence of the recent protests, but acknowledged that multiple crises are hitting Haiti and many people live in extreme poverty.

25 agents of DR National Police are training on human trafficking, in order to learn how to carry out investigations more effectively and efficiently in the fight against this type of crime in the Dominican Republic.

DR opens more doors to cruise ships for investment

Vitelio Mejia, President of the Dominican Baseball League reported that the agreements to broadcast the LIDOM games in the U.S. have been renewed and signed. Korean multinational wants to invest in D.R.

Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Plant has ashes for industrial use

Celso Marranzini, coordinator and supervisor of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTPC), reported that it would continue to operate with coal as fuel, given the complications that markets have faced with other types of fuels, such as Liquefied Natural Gas.  Therefore, the decarbonization process of the plants will have to wait. George Reinoso, executive director of the CTPC affirmed the ashes generated by mineral coal could be used in cement, asphalt and other industrial procedures. 

 

Punta Cana-Macao Energy Consortium (CEPM) will invest one billion dollars in renewable energy

Migration has deported more than 5,000 illegal Haitians in the last week

Foreign investment in Puerto Plata, D.R. reached US$707 million in 2021

The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, said that the first line of epidemiological control is the border trade zone: Dajabón, Elías Piña, Jimaní and Pedernales. This initiative will be offering medical care simultaneously at the Olympic Center and at the Azua sports center.

It is specified that when the IMAM is below the threshold of 50 points, it reflect that the economic conditions and perspectives of the sector are considered unfavorable. 

 

Food security risks worry regional foreign ministers

As of Monday, a visit to sectors of the capital in search of Haitians did not seem like an easy task when they themselves state that, despite having their documentation up to date, they are hiding.

“We are here imprisoned. You are afraid to leave because regardless of whether you have the papers or not, they are taking everyone," said Maxi Belbal, a Haitian who has lived from manufacturing in the country, along with his wife and four children, for more than 20 years.

Hundreds of Haitian citizens are deported daily from Dominican territory, according to government data, and taken to one of the centers in Haina to later be transported to the border of their country.

President Abinader has referred on several occasions to the lack of conditions that the Dominican Republic has to bear the weight that, historically and systematically, Haiti means for the Dominican State, however the reasons for repatriation do not seem sufficient to the thousands who live among the national streets.

Dominican drug lord César Emilio Peralta, known as “El Abusador”, pled guilty to drug trafficking charges in U.S. federal court, authorities said Monday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Puerto Rico said César Emilio Peralta Adamez was accused of importing cocaine into the United States for a decade.

Authorities said he led a Dominican-based drug-trafficking organization that imported tons of drugs from Colombia and Venezuela to Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland.

Peralta was indicted by a U.S. federal grand jury in 2018, arrested in Colombia in 2019 and extradited to Puerto Rico in 2021. He is scheduled to be sentenced in May 2023.

Duvalier, the widow of dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, asks the president to “respect human rights” of their compatriots.

“He is a racist who hates Haiti and Haitians with all his heart. The current human rights abuses against Haitians are akin to ethnic cleansing. Abinader’s racist policy towards Haitians can only be compared to that of Trujillo,” the former Prime Minister of Haiti wrote on his Twitter account.

According to a source from El Dia, Cesar Emilia Peralta "El Abusador" reached an agreement with the Federal Prosecutor of Puerto Rico in exchange for information from his partners on that island, the Dominican Republic and Colombia.

The drug lord also agreed to hand over assets that were not seized during the operations to dismantle his network in the DR.

The negotiation between the drug trafficker, his lawyers and federal prosecutors started last April and it was not until last week that it was accepted by Peralta.

A woman was arrested last week in New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after customs officers discovered nearly half a million dollars’ worth of cocaine in her wheelchair.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Monday that the woman, Emelinda Paulino De Rivas, was arrested on Nov. 10. She arrived at JFK airport on a flight from the Dominican Republic in a wheelchair and customs officers stopped her after realized that the wheels "were not turning."

DR National Police is strengthened against gender violence in the country

According to General Celesta Yanet Jiménez Cabral, director of DEAMVI - Specialized Directorate for Attention to Women and Domestic Violence - the progress made by the National Police in its fight against sexist violence is improving.

She said that to date 73% of the arrest orders received have been executed.   More than 20,000 women in cases of gender and family violence have been assisted, and more than 5,000 rescues of victims have been carried out so far in 2022. 

 

Two Dominicans arrested in Puerto Rico with 133 kilos of alleged cocaine

Two Dominicans were arrested as U.S. authorities seized 133 kilos of cocaine that they were trying to smuggle to the island. Agents from the Maritime Surveillance Division of the United Rapid Action Forces of Puerto Rico intercepted a 22-foot (7-meter) vessel and inspected the ship, finding the two detainees with six bundles; the value of the substance has not been specified.     

 

Two Venezuelans and a Dominican are caught with 509 packages of drugs

The National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) and the Dominican Republic Navy, supported by State Intelligence agencies and under the coordination of the Public Ministry, seized 509 packages of cocaine, in an interdiction operation, off the coast of Cumayasa, San Pedro de Macorís province.  

The authorities arrested two Venezuelans and a Dominican.

 

World Bank reports decrease in banking usage in the DR

According to the Global Findex 2021 of the World Bank, the Dominican Republic has registered a decrease in banking use.

In 2014, the World Bank reported 3,253,470 unbanked adults in the Dominican Republic. That number dropped to 3,251,818 in 2017. However, by 2021, it increased again to 3,833,485 (49%).

The governor stated there was a growing trend in the use of financial products and added, "In our country, Internet banking users, which in 2014 were 1.4 million, as of September 2022 reached 5.9 million users".

Biviana Riveiro Disla, executive director of the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana) and the Dominican Ambassador to Qatar Georges Bahsa, established the DR commercial office at the Dominican Embassy in Qatar.  Rivero stated, “Years ago, Dominican exports were nil, today we have 13,062% growth. The products that exhibit significant growth are cigars, jewelry, rum, beauty products, coffee, textiles, and macadamia, among others.”

Catholic Church in Dajabon criticizes Haitians repatriations

Catholic priest Roberto Guzmán, in Dajabon, denounced that migrants are subject to violent, humiliating and unprofessional procedures. According to him, the detention centers in that area do not comply with the minimum of services that guarantee human dignity. Children as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers are not exception to this situation.

"The country has the right to organize its borders and to enforce the migration law, what they (the authorities) have no right to do is to violate the fundamental rights of people." 

 

National Statistics Office (ONE) concludes 2022 Census in 26 provinces

The National Statistics Office (ONE) reports that, 19 days after the start of the field operations of the Tenth National Population and Housing Census (XCNPV), in 26 provinces the data collection work has been completed, "remaining very few segments pending closure”. The provinces that are still carrying out data collection are Santo Domingo, Santiago and La Altagracia, projected to close on November 30, 2022. 

 

Census enumerators resign for non-payment

The Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Education (Minerd), will launch a tender for the construction of a thousand classrooms focused on children from 3 to 5 years old, a project to strengthen early childhood education.  Minister Ángel Hernández stated that everything is ready to publish the scope of work, which will be l built in 2023. Minister Hernández said, "The learning deficit caused during the COVID-19 pandemic must be corrected." 

 

An increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is reported

A systematic increase has been reported in hospitalizations for COVID-19 in recent days, together with an increase in positive cases that are reported by the system. Yesterday, authorities notified 29 hospitalized patients, 23 were in regular rooms, and six in Intensive Care Units (ICU).
