South Africa vs. Mexico, June 11, 10:00 a.m. (Friday)
Normally, a World Cup opener is a huge event unto itself. When a nation is representing an entire continent for the first time in history, this match takes on an even larger persona. On paper, Mexico, a regular knockout-round fixture, should easily handle the hosts. But nothing about this game will be formulaic. Bafana Bafana will come out with rugged intention under the leadership of Brazilian World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. They will look to give the continental fans an immediate sense of hope, and earn important points to help avoid being the first host nation not to advance to the knockout round.

Nigeria vs. Argentina, June 12, 10:00 a.m. (Saturday)
Argentina's back line that has little experience playing together will be put to the sword against the next-best team in Group B. Nigeria, spurred on by ravenous home support in Africa, will probe Maradona's new defense with great vigor and ingenuity. Argentina should have no problem scoring, either, with the most talented attacking corps in the World Cup. So expect goals aplenty!

England vs. United States, June 12, 2:30 p.m. (Saturday)
Historic rivals and allies, the U.S. and England meet in Rustenburg with the world watching. The English invented the game and the Americans have no business trying to compete with them, but times have changed. The U.S. comes into the match full of confidence after reaching the Confederations Cup final last year in South Africa, but Fabio Capello has transformed the Three Lions into one of Europe's best teams. Will history repeat itself? In 1950, the Americans pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in World Cup history by beating England 1-0 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This one you simply cannot miss

Serbia vs. Germany, June 13, 10:00 a.m. (Sunday)
Few teams in World Cup history have performed as consistently and admirably as the Germans. But this squad is young and hampered by a rash of injuries, which the clinical Serbs will be keen to exploit. Serbia boasts perhaps the most impressive defensive back four in the world, and Germany will have to be at its machine-like best to break them down. Expect a war when these two proud European nations clash

Paraguay vs. Italy, June 14, 2:30 p.m. (Monday)
Defending champion Italy begins its title defense here. An aging back line for Italy will be tested by the best strike force in Group F in Roque Santa Cruz and Lucas Barrios. For Paraguay, getting a result here would be a huge step toward its goal of winning the group, which would likely mean avoiding Holland in the Round of 16.

Ivory Coast vs. Portugal, June 15, 10:00 a.m. (Tuesday)
As most expect Brazil to top Group G, the true battle to advance will come down to these talent-laden teams. To think that one of these countries will not move on is a travesty of its own. Since this is the first game of the group stage for each team, getting a result is of critical importance. Ronaldo can't carry the Iberians on his own, so he'll need help from his teammates to take down "The Elephants" on their home continent. The lingering question of Didier Drogba's health will no doubt have a huge impact on this match

Brazil vs. Ivory Coast, June 20, 2:30 p.m. (Sunday)
This is the key matchup in the Group of Death, but Ivory Coast better pray that Didier Drogba is healthy by the second match. Brazil is the World Cup favorite. The Ivorians (when Drogba is playing) are the best African team in the first World Cup played on African soil. Ivory Coast will face a Dunga-inspired Brazilian defense that concedes little and offers much going forward. But "The Elephants" defense ain't no slouch, either, with talents like the Toure brothers, Emmanuel Eboue and Didier Zokora. You will not see two better teams face off in the group stage.

Cameroon vs. Netherlands, June 24, 2:30 p.m. (Thursday)
Should Denmark fail to fulfill its dark horse promise, this battle will most likely determine top spot in Group E and the opportunity to avoid the reigning World Cup champs in the Round of 16 (should Italy finish first in its group, as many expect). While the "Indomitable Lions" would seem overmatched by the Netherlands' attacking prowess, there is no denying the boost that all African teams will enjoy throughout the tournament. Arjen Robben's precarious injury situation also adds uncertainty to this matchup.

Portugal vs. Brazil, June 25, 10:00 a.m. (Friday)
Not only do they share a common language, history and culture, these two countries also share an insatiable desire to beat the other on the pitch. Two of the last three World Players of the Year (Ronaldo and Kaka, pictured) will be the focal points in the latest edition of this rivalry. The Iberians will find it difficult to break down a sturdy Brazilian back line, but it won't be for a lack of effort or creativity. Emotions will certainly run high for the full 90 minutes

Chile vs. Spain, June 25, 2:30 p.m. ET (Friday)
Chile represents Spain's biggest challenge in Group H on La Furia's march toward its first World Cup. The Spaniards shouldn't have much trouble against Switzerland or Honduras, and the Chileans may be fighting for a place in the knockout stage. This match could show whether Spain is playing the type of soccer that will really take it to the title
