The long list of Haitians humiliated and murdered in the Dominican Republic is a minor indicator of a much graver concern as to the future of a ‘failed state’ next to the increasingly robust economic growth the DR is experiencing. Sorrow, shame, a sense of despair and hopelessness could overcome the mind that envisions a renewed and prosperous Haiti...
In a 34-page glossy advertisement published in the current Foreign Policy issue, profiling the DR’s various business opportunities and seeking investors with the themes of tourism, commerce, exports, prosperity, entrepreneurship etc, Haiti is depicted as follows: “ When it comes to immigration issues, .. The Dominican Republic’s economic strength relative to Haiti, the other country that shares the island of Hispaniola, has led to more than 800,000 Haitians living and working illegally in the DR… In December 1999, the Dominican and Haitian governments signed an agreement on illegal Haitian immigration, providing mechanisms to protect the rights of deportees. Haiti agreed to improve its control over illegal emigration and recognizes the Dominican Republic’s right to enforce its immigration laws… Nonetheless, more progress is needed.”…
One cannot help to wonder when Haitians will truly stand for Haiti; what could be done to overcome the demons that paralyze leaders and followers, weak and strong, literate and illiterate, visionary and sightless. Some seems to want to muster all might to change the course of Haiti’s history. The light at the end of the tunnel is however more dimmer than ever.
Much more is needed if we are to succeed. |
