DR government and political parties will create committees to draw U.S. and Europe attention towards Haitian crisis

During the second meeting to discuss an united position on Haiti, it was agreed to create two commissions that will travel to the United States and Europe to call the attention of the international community to find a solution to the Haitian crisis.

The commissions will visit the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), the U.S. Department of State and the European Parliament, in Brussels, Belgium. Dominican Government reiterated the call to the opposition political parties to join the pact that seeks to defend DR sovereignty.

National Salary Committee increases minimum wage by 19%

The National Salary Committee (CNS) announced a 19% increase in the minimum wage for non-sector private employees. 15% will be applied in April and 4% in February 2024. The unionists had presented a proposal for a 35% increase.

President of World Bank to visit Dominican Republic next week

David Malpass President of the World Bank (WB) will make official visits to the Dominican Republic next week and will emphasize the importance of boosting competitiveness and facilitating private sector investment in order to accelerate growth. The WB President will be in DR on March 12 and 13, and he will meet with President Luis Abinader, and WB local authorities and partners.

 

DR Ministry of Tourism signs agreement with German airline

David Collado Minister of Tourism signed an agreement with German airline Condor, to cover the demand for transportation from the European continent, after Air France flights were cancelled for summer due to high operating costs.  Minister Collado and Bernd Bechtel, Condor's Director signed the agreement at the ITB in Berlin.

DR President Luis Abinader to pitch opening WBC game in Miami

Dominican President Luis Abinader is headed to Miami U.S. to throw the first pitch this Saturday  game at the loan Depot Park. Team DR will first play Venezuela in the 5th World Baseball Classic. The Dominican Republic is playing in Pool D against Israel, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.

 

Family and activists protest outside hospital as deadline for comatose patient’s deportation to DR approaches

Immigration activists, community members and an Allentown city council member met at the entrance of Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest Wednesday to express they will not let the hospital send a comatose mother to the Dominican Republic.

The woman, who lives in the U.S. without permanent legal status, suffered a brain aneurysm on Dec. 29 and had a stroke during surgery to clip the aneurysm. For the last two months, the 46-year-old has been in a medically induced coma.

Ministry of Health would vaccinate girls against the Human Papilloma Virus

The Ministry of Public Health seeks to immunize 500,000 girls between the ages of 9 and 14 against carcinogenic strains of the Human Papilloma Virus. For such purposes, the ministry will roll out a national education campaign, to which the Dominican Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics joined.  

 

Environment begins final phase of technical closure of Duquesa landfill

The Ministry of the Environment began the final phase of the partial technical closure of the Duquesa landfill planting more than 3,000 plants of different species in an area of 86,365 square meters out of a total of more than one million square meters of the property.  Miguel Ceara Hatton, Minister of the Environment, said that the idea is to start planting as the beginning of a process that will last several years to permanently close Duquesa landfill.

 

DR President promises to promote a strong law against gender violence

President Luis Abinader ratified his commitment to promote a law to eradicate violence against women, intrafamily violence and gender violence. Dominican president said that it is necessary to continue the dialogue to reduce violence against women in Dominican society.

Doctors Without Borders closes its hospital in Haiti

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders says gang violence in Haiti's capital has forced the temporary closure of its hospital in Port-au-Prince. It said that patients and staff at its facility in the Cité Soleil district had been put at risk.

 

 

Cases of children and women who consume drugs in the DR increase

According to Julio Díaz Capellán, Director of Hogar Crea Dominicano, (DR leading institution in treatment and prevention of addictions), the cases of children and women who use drugs in the DR have increased after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Women and children cases admitted in the institution arrive with a history of sexual abuse and mistreatment due to addiction, especially to marijuana and crack.

Helicopter crashed at Los Cacaos, San Cristóbal and pilot dies

Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) reported that the helicopter Bell Textron 2066, HI951 crashed between two mountains in Los Naranjos, Los Cacaos municipality. The pilot, Captain Andrés Negarit María Espaillat, who was the only passenger, died. The Investigation Commission for Aviation Accidents (CIAA) is in charge of the investigations.

 

58% of people in Dominican Republic do not have access to formal economy

According to a report presented by McKinsey & Company, six out of 10 people live of the informal economy in the Dominican Republic.

“The urbanization model generated large cities in Santiago and Santo Domingo, where a very good part of the population does not have access nor belongs to the formal economy, nor contribute as individuals to Social Security,” highlighted Andrés Cadenas, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company.
