Death of Kenyan officer confirmed after gang attack in Haiti

(LD; El DíaCNN; Thursday, March 27, 2025)

Kenyan officer Bénédict Kabiru, initially reported missing, has been confirmed dead following an armed gang attack in Haiti’s Artibonite region, becoming the second casualty from the UN-backed multinational mission led by Kenya. The Haitian Transitional Council praised Kabiru’s bravery and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring security and justice in the country. Despite efforts by the multinational force, violence from gangs controlling over 85 percent of Port-au-Prince continues to claim thousands of lives, with more than 5,600 deaths reported in 2024.

  • Editorial: “Solidarity with Haiti”
    (Acento; Thursday, March 27, 2025)
Acento’s editorial expresses deep concern over the escalating crisis in Haiti, where armed gangs have seized control of most of Port-au-Prince, leaving residents in constant danger, particularly from stray bullets. It highlights the collapse of the media sector due to violence, lack of resources, and targeted attacks, as well as the broader threat posed by gang alliances with drug traffickers. The piece calls for urgent international support -particularly from France, Canada, and the U.S.- to restore order and sovereignty in Haiti, echoing President Luis Abinader’s view that Haiti’s instability endangers the entire Caribbean, especially the neighboring Dominican Republic.

PRM deputies short list 15 candidates for the Chamber of Accounts

(DL; CDN; La Informacion; Thursday, March 27, 2025)

The Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Deputies, dominated by the ruling PRM party, selected 15 candidates for the Chamber of Accounts without opposition support, prompting walkouts and accusations of illegitimacy from rival parties. Critics warn the politically unilateral process may lead to renewed dysfunction, echoing the internal conflicts and scandals that plagued the agency in 2023.

(DL; Thursday, March 27, 2025)

The Chamber of Accounts, despite consuming nearly $21.82 million dollars  ($1.2 billion pesos) in public funds in 2024, has consistently failed to fulfill its role as a watchdog over government spending. It has instead been used as a political tool to protect allies and threaten opponents. The editorial calls for a fundamental reform of the institution to restore its independence, credibility, and commitment to protecting public resources.

This cartoon satirizes the selection of new candidates for the Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Accounts, urging that it focus on real fiscal oversight rather than scandals or political drama, reflecting public frustration with past dysfunction.
