Dominicans voluntarily leave Puerto Rico in face of deportations
(El Caribe; Friday, March 28, 2025)
Fearing mass deportations under a new executive order by President Trump, over 120 undocumented Dominicans have voluntarily returned from Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic. Dominican Consul César Cedeño emphasized that those who leave voluntarily avoid damaging their immigration records, preserving future chances to re-enter the U.S. legally. Protocols have also been implemented to minimize the impact on children, particularly students, and the consulate remains committed to protecting the rights of Dominican nationals.
Senator Luis Sepúlveda commented on the challenge of estimating the number of undocumented Dominicans in New York. While the state has nearly one million Dominicans with official residency, Sepúlveda stated that having an approximate amount of the undocumented population is difficult. He estimated that between 150,000 and 250,000 Dominicans may be living in the state without legal documentation, particularly in areas with a high concentration of Dominican and Puerto Rican residents.

He underscored the importance of Guyana in U.S. efforts to reduce dependence on Venezuelan energy and highlighted the potential threats posed by Venezuela’s drug-related regime.
White House account mocks Dominican woman by posting photo in Ghibli style
(DL; CDN; LD; Friday, March 27, 2025)
The White House drew backlash for posting an animation of a Dominican woman in deportation proceedings styled like a Studio Ghibli image, prompting accusations of cruelty and mockery from social media users. Virginia Basora González had been previously deported in 2020 for drug possession and was recently re-arrested by ICE after re-entering the U.S. illegally. While her case remains pending, the Ghibli-style image sparked outrage, as critics denounced it as “disrespectful and inappropriate behavior" from an official government account.

President Luis Abinader and First Lady Raquel Arbaje joined the global trend of Studio Ghibli-style images by sharing an illustration of themselves on Instagram, which quickly went viral. The drawing shows the couple with a soft, nostalgic aesthetic, accompanied by the caption, “Working every day, in the best company.”

Opinion: “The moral corruption of Trumpism”
(Acento;
Friday, March 28, 2025)
In his article, lawyer Eduardo Jorge Prats argues that Trumpism openly embraces
cruelty and dehumanization, especially toward immigrants, undermining the rule
of law and moral norms. Drawing on thinkers like Agamben and Žižek, it warns
that such behavior reflects a deeper moral decay in democratic societies, where
populist leaders exploit public frustration to target the vulnerable and
normalize inhumane policies.
