Dominican labor market has multiple minimum salaries

There are some 25 categories of minimum salaries, sectorized and non-sectorized, in the DR. The president of the Dominican Employers' Confederation (Copardom), Laura Peña Izquierdo, concurs with the Minister of Labor to unify 17 minimum salaries in one. “I very much agree with him, and it has been a topic of discussion in the business sector that there should be only one minimum salary or maybe two,” 

 

U.S. Embassy in DR digitizes CRBA application and payment

U.S. Embassy in DR announced the digitalization of the application and payments for the process of Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), as of March 15th. The Embassy made the announcement as part of big changes for the American Citizen Services Unit.

U.S. non-governmental organization Batey Relief Alliance (BRA), with the support of USAID, will provide ophthalmologist assistance to vulnerable communities in the Municipality of Guerra (East Santo Domingo). Dr. Ulrick Gaillard, president of BRA, informed that USAID has supported this initiative with the donation of dehydrated and nutritious food through the IFRP Title II Food Aid Program.

Health Care Authorities: Removing health personnel over 60 was a bad idea

Health system authorities and medical specialists analyzed the response that the DR gave to the COVID-19 pandemic. They agreed that the government measure to send doctors and other personnel over 60 years of age home as a protection measure during the Covid-19 pandemic was a bad decision, because hospitals were left without their best specialists.

U.S. authorities take measures to control risks from the collapse of SVB

U.S. regulators announced measures late Sunday to further stem systemic risks from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.  The Treasury Department reported that people with funds deposited at SVB will be able to access their money.

National Drug Control Directorate dismantles a drug network that trafficked marijuana from the U.S.

National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and Customs Directorate dismantled a drug trafficking network dedicated to buying and bringing large amounts of marijuana from the United States. Five people were arrested in operations carried out at Punta Cana International Airport, and raids carried out in Piantini, Arroyo Hondo and Ciudad Real sectors of the National District.

 

Three Dominicans died in shipwreck reported off the coast of Puerto Rico

The boat shipwreck off the coast of Puerto Rico, where two women and one man died has caused great consternation among the population.

The victims were identified as Raudy Antigua Durán, Diana Carolina López Rosario and Jacqueline Hiciano, residents of El Mango de Las Coles, La Reforma and Guaraguao, respectively.

 

Construction of fence at Dominican-Haitian border is delayed

According to the Ministry of Defense, the construction of fence at the DR- Haiti border is delayed. Only 7.30 of the work has been concluded, and it was supposed that by this time at least 25% would be completed.

 

Mu-Kien Sang Ben: "The educational changes in National Police education could be seen in five years"

Dominican government appointed a Technical Commission for the Reform of the National Police officers Educational System with the aim of elevating the professionalism profile of its members. Mu-Kien Sang Ben, president of the Technical Commission explained, "The Dominican population will not see the results of this training for at least five years."

 

Investigating Court imposed coercive measure to man accused of provoking Valle Nuevo National Park fire

The Investigating Court of the Judicial District of Azua imposed an economic guarantee of US$17,800 and periodic presentation, as a measure of coercion against Klen Ramírez, accused of provoking a fire at Valle Nuevo National Park.

According to a report by the Bloomberg agency, Dominican sovereign debt instruments are becoming favorites among New York City Wall Street investors, as other Latin American debt instruments begin to fade. The bonds are recommended by entities such as JP Morgan Chase & Co., Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argenta and Banco Santander, due to the country’s economic recovery compared to its peers.

According to the geologist Osiris de León, at the end of last week the water level of the dams reservoirs dropped one meter compared to the previous week. He assures it is insufficient to cover the high demands for water from aqueducts and irrigation canals.
