Subject: INVITATION - Teaching about Haiti: A Teach-In for Teachers

Dear Dr. Plaisir:

We are writing to invite you to speak at a
special forum, “Teaching about Haiti: A Teach-In
for Teachers,” hosted by the NYU Steinhardt
Department of Teaching and Learning and
co-sponsored by the NYU Center for Latin American
and Caribbean Studies. The devastating earthquake
that struck Haiti on January 12th, 2010 has
captured the imaginations of children of all ages
and presents a tragic “teachable moment” for
their school teachers. The goal of this forum is
to provide these teachers a solid cultural,
historical, and contextual framework for
understanding Haiti before and after the
earthquake, so that they are better equipped to teach their own students.

We would like to plan the forum for late March or
beginning of April. If you are interested in
participating, please let us know by March 5th
your availability for March 27th or April 3rd. We
will work out the time of the forum when we have
a confirmed list of speakers. We are able to
offer a modest honorarium and if you are coming
from out of town, we will gladly cover your travel expenses.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Fabienne Doucet, Assistant Professor, Department of Teaching and Learning
Robby Cohen, Professor and Chair, Department of Teaching and Learning
