Good luck with your rally. I wanted to share what I wrote after my
second trip to Haiti since the earthquake. Ted
I have just returned from my second trip to Haiti since the
earthquake. The impact of the earthquake is the worst thing I have
seen in my lifetime. The recovery of Haiti, the recovery of
businesses, the recovery of jobs, the recovery of homes is on such a
scale as to seem almost impossible to recover.
There are hundreds of thousands of people living in tent cities and
many who do not even have a tent. There is unimaginable devastation
from Port-au-Prince to Jacmel. Many buildings are sitting on the first
floor and somehow still stand. These create a danger as Haiti
continues to receive aftershocks; we had two while I was there. An
even larger danger comes as we approach the rainy season and the
hurricane season. These buildings are not only dangerous to those
passing by but create a safe place for mosquitoes and rats to breed.
On my last day I visited an orphanage I have been visiting for the
last couple of years called the Children of Jesus. They had two
buildings and all their walls collapse. What is left of the two
remaining structures is very unstable and needs to be torn down. There
are `60 children and 14 adults sleeping under tarps. When it rains,
they take shelter in the better of the two standing buildings. We are
going to do what we can to build, at a minimum, a place for them to
sleep. At the same time, their septic system filled and they are
without any sanitation. They need our immediate help with new shelter
and functioning toilets.
I traveled to Jacmel and even though the road was open, it is very
fragile. Dirt has covered the retaining walls and filled the drainage
ditches. There were places where there are cracks in the road and it
looks as if some sections of the road will eventually fall down the
hill. I don’t know how they will be able to keep the road open once it
starts to rain. This will close off all transport including fuel and
food for a large part of southern Haiti.
The roads in Port-au-Prince are more crowded than ever because some of
the side roads have been closed or have people sleeping in tents in
the roads. The people are doing their best to go forward and are
selling everything on sidewalks and sometimes in the streets. The
earthquake did not only pick on the poor. The small middle class and
those with money were also impacted and are now trying to determine
how to restart their lives.
The government of Haiti lost many buildings and many of their managers
and is working under difficult conditions to recover. It will take
years before it goes back to normal. President Preval said it would
take a thousand trucks a thousand days to haul away all the rubble. I
do not believe this is an exaggeration.
In a plane on my way to Haiti I sat next to a lawyer who had been in a
meeting that day with the company that cleaned up the World Trade
Center. They told him that cleaning up Haiti was too large a project
for them and it would take a company like Bechtel to handle.
I was able to meet with two of our contractors to discuss projects
that were in the planning stages before the earthquake. Everyone I met
is still in some state of shock but trying to get back to normal
whatever that means now. The public schools and many private schools
have not been able to restart and there is talk they will not start
again until the fall.

season and that cool heads will prevail to find long-term solutions
