I just released a refinement to Haiola that improves epub generation
and corrects a problem in default cover art generation. As usual, it
is available at
http://Haiola.org, along with pointers to source
code.
For some free epub Bible files, check out http://eBible.org/epub/.
There are also Amazon Kindle .mobi equivalents for those Scripture
files that are in languages that Kindle supports.
Please forgive
the crude and temporary index. A better one is under
construction that gives language names, titles, etc. In the mean
time, all file names start with the Ethnologue/ISO 3-letter code for
the language. There are also links to specific files there from the
language index pages on
PNGScriptures.org,
VanuatuBibles.org, etc. There
are
667 epub files and
154 mobi files there, all
freely redistributable as long as you don't charge money for them.
There are a few Public Domain Bibles in the collection, and those
you may sell for money if you can... but anyone can still get a free
copy at this source. (If you want to try, go for it. People buy
bottled water and bottled air, even in places with really good tap
water.) Most of the Bibles in that directory are under a Creative
Commons Attribution Noncommercial No Derivatives license (with
additional permission to convert to other file formats but not
change the text), so they may not be sold without getting additional
permission from the appropriate copyright steward. These epub and
mobi files are all DRM-free, meaning that they don't have "Digital
Rights Management" features to limit copying or limit which
programs, apps, and devices can be used to read them. Over the last
month, we have made some significant improvements in formatting and
compatibility, so you might want to get a fresh copy if you
downloaded any of them earlier. These are best read with a good
epub3-compatible reader, like the Gitden Reader or iBooks. They work
with Barnes & Noble Nook e-readers and various other devices and
apps, as well, with varying formatting fidelity.
I have been generating mobi files with
Amazon's
free kindlegen application, which converts epub files to mobi
files. This works fine in a haiola post-processing script, so I
don't plan to actually integrate it into Haiola any more than that.
