Hello, HaikuMasters!

Once again it's nearly time for Haiku's fall retreat. It's one of our favorite times of year because we plan what's next for Haiku LMS! We pack up our computers, pull out the whiteboard, and plan the next year of development at Haiku.

How do we lay out our roadmap for development?
  1. We take the items from our Feedback forum and pay close attention to activity and number of votes.
  2. We organize the issues in our ticket system and bring them along (these items are generally minor changes, optimizations and bugs).
  3. We bring our users' wish lists to the meeting, whether it is Google Calendar integration, or a Haiku Responder Application that can run on your iPhone or a LMS that can scratch your back at the end of a long day in the classroom.  We take all these wishes seriously (but we haven't figured out the 'Scratch your Back' enhancement yet).  ;)
  4. We bring our vision as to where we think eLearning is evolving, and how Haiku LMS can make that a 'simple' reality to our users. These are the big picture items and sometimes involve planning much further out than just this year.
And then?

We bring all these things together and then dream a bit together (this part is our favorite). And then we schedule it (reality bites...because you can never do everything you want to do).

So...what does this have to do with you???  Everything.
  1. Over the next week (through October 20) we want to hear what is most important to you (and your teachers) as our HUG members.  We care deeply about what you have to say. Post your comments to this topic. And keep it to the three most important items.
  2. If you want to sway the vote, get your teachers to sign up for accounts in our  Feedback forum (anonymous comments don't count, they only stick around for a limited time and then disappear). You can sway the forums in your favor if you can get your teachers to participate.
  3. Read over other HUG members' suggestions...if you like what you see speak up! Commenting is wonderful.
We'll report back to HUG the roadmap after our retreat, so you'll be the first to know the exciting plans for this next year.

Now it's your turn. Our ears and minds are open. Talk to us!

Please make it possible to export components of a course such as Assessments, etc. independently of the rest of the course.

I can think of a number of things that have occurred to me as I have worked with Haiku for the last few years. So here would be my personal wishlist posted vaguely in order of preference:

1) A global list of a student's activity. I wish that I could click on a students name, in the roster, or gradebook, and see a summary of all her contributions, uploads, discussions, assessments, Like the statistics page, but instead a list of students assignments and discussion participation, assessment grades, dropbox, All in one location. It would enable me to see, at a glance, which assignments and assessments that a student has done, and which she has not. Rather than going through every assignment individually to check to see if she has turned in an assignment. Right now the only way to get a global sense of a student is through the gradebook, but that only works if I put EVERYTHING into the gradebook.

2) A global inbox on the Portal page. Or at least a clickthrough list of how many email I have in each inbox. With several different classes running on Haiku at once, it is very time consuming to click to each class, then go to connect, and then inbox, for every class that I teach just to see if there it email there from students. I would love to be able to see at a glance where I have email, and get there in one step if possible.

3) Wikiproject monitoring. (this request comes from several teachers at my school too) I have students do group Wikis, but right now there doesn't seem to be a way to see WHICH student has worked on the project and when. So there is no way to know if a student has done her fair share on a project. Even a time stamp, or statistics page for a wiki would be a huge help for a teacher in evaluating student work and participation.

4) A list of recent discussion posts on the portal page that can be clicked through directly to the relevant discussion.

Thanks what I can come up with at the moment off the top of my head..I am sure I will think of a few more =)

Thank you Heather, you have expressed exactly what I would have asked for (albeit much better than I likely would have explained it).

So please, Haiku, do this!

St. Mary's would:
******LOVE to make grades publish for only students, not parents.
Make giving papers back to the drop box faster. Teachers won't use the
dropbox b/c the return is unhandy.
Wiki's to document who did what when
a student option for taking notes within Haiku
of course, full functionality of a mobile app

Thanks for asking and considering our ideas!

Using accents in Haiku is very frustrating because of the multi-click process. Accents are not supported in all aspects of Haiku. For example, students are unable to use them when responding to a multiple choice assessment. Adding the option of a floating accent bar or incorporating the standard accent keyboard shortcuts would be greatly appreciated.

The Dropbox grading function is time consuming. It is fast for me to print the essays and grade them by hand instead of waiting for them to download and upload.

When creating the final mobile app, I would like to be able to grade from Dropbox (i.e. add handwritten comments to essays) on my iPad using a stylus.

Being able to embed Quia Books activities and Vista Higher Learning Supersite activities into Haiku would be helpful in streamlining my classes.

Being able to change the language in Haiku to French, etc would allow users to use spell check and allow students an additional opportunity to engage with the language.

Our parents (and teachers would like parents to see this) would like to see that assignments were turned in by students and when.

Teachers would love to be able to print out and/or view grades for just 1 student.

Drag and drop assessments is a request as well.

Hi, Renee--

Thanks for creating this forum, Renee!  We had a few admin suggestions, and a few teacher suggestions.

Admin Suggestions
- Feature for "global" announcements from the school on the student home page/landing page.
- The ability for students to see what classmates are online at that time and then "one click" Skype with each other (much like the teacher skype button).

Here are some of the suggestions from our teachers:
- Many of our teachers said: "I would like to see an option to tailor assignments and assessment settings to individual students.  (ex. a due date could be extended for someone but not others, a student could receive extended time on an assessment)"  This is a huge one for us!
- The ability to determine whether to announce changes/updates to the course site to students, or not (so that students would not necessarily see every change made to the website).
- Continuing improvement in the ability to import images (particularly into assessments).  It’s much better than it was at the beginning of last year, but still needs to be refined.
The ability to convert a non-pdf (jpeg or other format) dropbox document into a pdf so that it can be annotated and graded within the dropbox.
I'd like to have some kind of tool like Skype or Wimba where two people or more could meet and record their speeches.  It will be the best if we could do this within Haiku.

- A feature on the discussion board that requires a student to submit an original post before she can see the posts of other students.

Greetings,
I know I may be late with this... with 1,000 students in all U.S times zones and others, enabling students and teachers to set their time zones in Haiku has been very confusing for our school. Some students set them, some don't - same for teachers. So we end up with a variety of time zones on calendars that is confusing to all. Would it be possible to have a "school standard time zone"? ie. everything on Landry Academy is Eastern time. This would really be helpful to us. Thanks

Thanks to everyone for posting your suggestions.  Incredible stuff!!  Every one of your suggestions in this forum made it in front of the eyes of our team and the resulting conversations were lively and fascinating.

We had a wonderful planning retreat, and our reports from retreat will appear in blog and other forms over the next few weeks.

Thanks again for taking the time to share with us and we'll be in contact soon!

This is an old topic, but oral feedback is an excellent idea! I bet
most of our instructors would get great use out of it.

Yes, I was looking through all the make suggestions yesterday and oral feedback would be SWEET.  You can already do it but not natively in Haiku.  Every teacher I talked to about this thought this idea would be the cat's pajamas!
Thanks Haiku!
